Berlin’s sister city relationship with LA, which
now dates back fifty years, is not only our oldest
partnership, but also one of our most active. We
can look back on a long tradition, which includes
the emigrants who once found shelter here.
They are remembered today with a program for
young artists, to which Berlin contributes three
stipends a year. We want to continue shaping the
future the same way. A wide range of projects and
initiatives have been launched since 1967. Culture,
the film industry, science and education have
become mainstays of our friendship, in addition to
architecture, local administration, police work, and
the fire department.
But what unites us more than anything else is
that Berlin and LA are both places of desire and
cities of freedom. Let’s work together for a better
world where all of us have the same rights, where
liberty emerges victorious over all forms of conflict
and oppression, and where we work to make
globalization and digital change fair. We
want them to benefit not just a few, but to boost
everyone’s prosperity and quality of life.
Here at the Berlin Lab in LA, we want you to
experience Berlin’s unique attitude towards life. We
brought along some street art, and we invite you to
interactively explore Berlin’s design and art scene.
In our Tech Area, we are presenting the latest
technological innovations “Made in Berlin.”
With all this in mind, let’s get the best thinkers
from both cities together. Let’s work together
to give our city partnership new momentum –
thereby helping to write many new chapters of the
success story we have enjoyed for 50 years now.

ABOUT BERLIN
Did you know that with 350 galleries, 100 project spaces
and over 6000 global artists, Berlin is Europe’s art mecca.
A record 110,000 visitors attended this year’s Berlin Art
Week. Additionally, there are more museums than rainy
days in Berlin. Berlin averages 106 rainy days, yet boasts 180
museums to explore.
Berlin’s hip style was internationally recognized in 2006,
when Berlin was designated a “City of Design” by UNESCO
and joined the ranks of the UNESCO Creative Cities
Network alongside Buenos Aires, Montreal and Shanghai.
LA is too cool to be invited into this group and isn’t
jealous at all.
Packed with clubs that go all day and night, live
performances year round, and a major international
destination for concerts and events, Berlin is the music
capital of Germany and one of the most famous music
cities in the world. That means that there are between
40,000 and 50,000 people bouncing in the the clubs every
weekend in Berlin, which is equivalent to the amount of
people that moved to LA last year.

In 2017 LA and Berlin are celebrating their 50th anniversary
as sister cities, and who better to throw a party then these
two!?
Both are cities of drama and passion: trendsetting
powerhouses that have paved their own paths into
international fame. Their names alone conjure up unbridled
creativity and innovation, attracting creative minds from all
over the world who are looking to make their mark on the
arts, sciences, and technology.
“The affinities between LA and Berlin are
endless. Both are cosmopolitan, trendsetting
cities, boasting a vibrant cultural and
creative scene that transcends boundaries
and attracts diverse communities. It is
an honor for SCOLA (Sister Cities of LA)
to provide an extraordinary opportunity
to continue to enhance this kinship, and
facilitate the promotion of business, tourism,
and culture between our cities for years to
come.“

developers and industrial designers. The pool of talent and the film
and music industry right in front of the door makes LA so attractive
for Native Instruments.
Cheung: One of the LA startups is so successful in Berlin right now -
Thor Trucks. They just finished their Class 8 prototype (big semi-truck)
and are also creating Medium Duty electric trucks (think standard UPS
and FedEx trucks). These trucks are all electric and traction locally.
They attended the Berlin Trade Mission and met with Bosch while
in Germany. Given that advanced transportation is [something] the
County and City are pushing for as well...which I believe resonates
between Berlin and LA.
Franzke: I agree, Berlin and LA connect so much: they are cities where
new ideas emerge, creativity without limits can be lived. Talents from
all over the world are looking to LA and Berlin as a home to live and
work. This creates an ideal base for a thriving startup scene, innovative
companies and scientists who are developing new technologies and
insights for the future. For 50 years, we have been closely linked to
our city partnership and I am very pleased that we are intensively
pushing the exchange and cooperation on an economic level. For
example, the mutual visits of the economic delegations with the
mayors of LA and Berlin, such as Michael Müller, Governing Mayor of
Berlin, or Eric Garcetti, Mayor of LA, back in July.
Cheung: The spirit of Berliners is very interesting to me. It’s a city
that has seen so much change over the last century, which has made
the people as resilient and creative in the ways they’ve reshaped
their local economy. The city is becoming one of the epicenters of
innovation and technology. The amount of green and park space
around the city always amazes. I had the chance to do a biking tour
of the City on my last visit and the guide mentioned that over 40% of
Berlin is designated as park space.
Franzke: I am so glad you liked Berlin. LA is very strong and
committed in the areas of manufacturing, creative business, life
science and sustainability. I am anxious to see how we are shaping
the mobility of tomorrow. These are questions that are being worked
on in our cities every day. I think this is an important step in finding
connections for cooperation. In addition, I am happy to meet
Angelenos in our Berlin Lab and show them what Berlin is all about.
HELPING STARTUPS SUCCEEDThe Start Alliance was developed to help entrepreneurs
who, having successfully launched in their domestic
marketplace, test global markets quickly and cost
effectively by using Berlin as one of their main
international hubs. The Start Alliance is designed to help
startups expand by looking for new partners, raising
capital, and recruiting talent from international markets.
Their programs are designed for startups who want
to expand and enter new markets, cities that want to
implement internationalization strategies and large
corporations who are seeking access to a network of
highly innovative international startups.
An example of a successful startup who went through
the Start Alliance is Octopie (octopienetwork.com),
an animation production house and online animation
aggregator.
“Visiting Berlin was an incredible experience,” says Isaac
Krauss, head of Business Development for Octopie.
“Berlin has the reputation of being the Silicon Valley of
Europe. Octopie is an entertainment company, so content
distribution and regionalization was a specific topic
for me to explore in Berlin. We visited multiple startup
incubators and a comedy club. I was surprised by how
international the crowd was. It seems everyone under 30
was speaking English!”

A SOLID RELATIONSHIP: THE BUSINESS OF BEING SISTER CITIES Cheung: Good to have you here in LA, Stefan!
Franzke: Thanks, Stephen. Happy to be here. I look forward to
meet Angelenos, to visit the city and to get insights into the local
economy. Most of the people don’t know that German investment is
a cornerstone of international business activity in LA and Southern
California. Germany is the fifth largest investor: 858 firms are active
in LA and create almost 35,000 jobs.
Cheung: Yes, that’s right. Foreign-owned businesses pay, on average,
more than 20% higher wages than their domestic competitors. This is
often because international companies have high levels of knowledge
or expertise in their industries, which allows them to not only
compete but also thrive in the LA region. So as a result, Angelenos
working for these international businesses can experience higher
incomes and purchasing power.
Franzke: Berlin companies also value LA as a starting point for the
US market, for example Native Instruments. The Berlin-based digital
instrument pioneer has evolved from niche start-up to world market
leader in two decades. The company employs 60 people in their US
headquarters in LA, including sales marketing specialists, software Illus
