Network ?
y A network is a group of two or more entities linkedtogether.
y Computer Network ?
y A network consists of two or more computers thatare linked in order to share resources (such asprinters and CDs), exchange files, or allow electroniccommunications. The computers on a network may
be linked through cables, telephone lines, radio waves, satellites, or infrared light beams.

Characteristic Of Network
y The following characteristics are used to categorizedifferent types of networks:
Topology:y The geometric arrangement of a computer system.
Protocoly The protocol defines a common set of rules and signals that computers
on the network use to communicate.
A rchitecturey Networks can be broadly classified as using either a peer-to-peer or
client/server architecture.

Topolog y
y Topology refers to the shape of a network, or thenetwork's layout. How different nodes in a network
are connected to each other and how they communicate are determined by the network'stopology. Topologies are either physical or logical.
There A re five most common network topologies.

Mesh Topolog y
y Devices are connected with many redundantinterconnections between network nodes. In a truemesh topology every node has a connection to every
other node in the network.

Star Topolog y
y A ll devices are connected to a central hub. Nodescommunicate across the network by passing datathrough the hub.
y These Devices include Computers, network sharingPrinters, Cable or DSL modems, a Local Network
backbone and Hubs.
y Connected By twisted pair Cabling
y Connectors RJ-45s, W hile Phone is connected withRJ-11s You may have upto 1024 Nodes on a startopology N/ W at speed upto 100 MBPS

Bus Topolog y
y A ll devices are connected to a central cable, calledthe bus or backbone.
y On a Bus topology n/w one machine is plugged to the
next , which is plugged to the next and so ony Connected by Coaxil or ³Thin Ethernet´ cable.
y Bus topology n/w are limited to 30 machine and at bandwidth of 10MBPS
y Example: A television cable, each end specially terminated by use of ³terminating register´

R ing Topology
y A ll devices are connected to one another in the shapeof a closed loop, so that each device is connecteddirectly to two other devices, one on either side of it.

Tree Topology
y A hybrid topology. Groups of star-configurednetworks are connected to a linear bus backbone.
