ESTRELLA WARBIRDS MUSEUM
WOODLAND AUTO DISPLAY
Paso Robles, CA
Prez Sez Sherman Smoot Happy New Year everyone! I’m sure we all survived the Christmas season
as well as the inauguration of our 45th President of these United States.
It is going to be a challenging year for our museum - So many things to
accomplish. Once we get a master use plan laid out for the new property,
we will have some renderings and elevations for all to
see and promote to our Donors. Then, we will aggres-
sively pursue funding avenues. With the successful
development of the west 9 acres, we will be the muse-
um force to be reckoned with in this state. Over 85,000
sq ft of hangar space for our displays and a new Aviator’s
Hall which will be able to handle, feed, and entertain
over 500 people. WOW!
I want to personally thank Dan and Carol Verstuyft as they retire from the
Warbirds, Wings, and Wheels fund raiser. They brought a fledging event to
the largest money raising event for EWM. Carol will remain as Secretary of
the Board. Their dedication to the museum has been unwavering. Give
them a shout-out when you see them.
We hope to have two Swap Meets this year. The first one was a great
success. I will continue to solicit volunteers for all our events. Seems the
same people keep signing up. We need new blood!
REMEMBER, our next dinner meeting is on February 1, 2017. See you then!
My prayers to you and all in harm’s way,
Happy Valentine’s Day To Someone Far, Far Away!
NASCAR Hall Of Fame ICON Exhibits #1 Showpiece:
Woodland Davey Allison T-Bird
Charlotte NC- For just the third time since it opened in 2010, the
NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte has a new feature in its Glory
Road exhibit, one that highlights the most legendary drivers in the
history of the sport. This third iteration of Glory Road has been
dubbed ICONS and replaces the exhibit of six generations of
NASCAR race
cars. Eighteen
machines are
in the new
display,
and a press
conference
was called on Friday to unveil the final piece of the puzzle: Davey
Allison’s 1987 rookie season Winston Cup Ford Thunderbird. Just
a few weeks ago this machine rode a flat bed out of WAD and now
sits center stage at NASCAR HOF. Something to think
about…...and tell others about. For more: autoweek.com or

Updates From The Hangar and…… Dick’s Garage...
Wheels In The Works
From the Hangar—The H-19 Chicksaw is just about ready for public display.
The detail work is in the final phases: sten-
ciling, painting detail (rotor tips) and win-
dow cleaning are needed prior to final roll
out. This
detailing
went fur-
ther than
paint. The
control
panel was
completely refurbished. The pedals used to steer
the beast were actually “re-manufactured”.
Some metal control surfaces were formed to fit
on to the fuselage. The Plexiglas is in the midst of
a total polishing. The hope is that our H-19 will
get prominent display somewhere on the new
property. Next up is the H-54 to add to the twin
bill rotary-wing display.
The Firebee Drone is in the final paint/
stencil phase. The
nose and surface
tips are getting the
final salon treat-
ment. The Editor
learned that the
final color will NOT
be the Optic
Orange as seen in
most photos.
Seems the airship came to us in White. So White it is.
Bill Lander and the crew are busy
“discussing” the final elements to
make up the Viet Nam era Gun Truck
in time for the 2017 Pioneer Day
Parade. Right now the mounts for the
Browning .50 cal and/or M-60 guns
are taking up the time in fabrication.
Parts are in house. Now the “work”
begins on the final product. Won’t
be long now!

A Tease Peek Into Display Newcomers
WAD Recently: Woodland Auto Display will soon host a
couple of new stablemates. A sneak peek into what is in
store for visitors reveals a stellar ‘48 Packard Straight-Eight
Estate Wagon (A Maple-
Covered beauty!) and a
simply sumptuous ‘57 Buick
Roadmaster Convertible
(Two-Ton Head-Turner).
Another pony/racer will join
in the fray, the Frank Secrist
Racer…..good old #94. Work
on that frame has progressed, the engine is in the shop and
panels are in the
painting booth. Looks to
be at least a few months
before roll out though.

Pay Homage To Our Legacies
One By One.
You may recall our
speaker in Novem-
ber, Mr Lester
Lindow, one of
the Pear Harbor
Survivors. Here he
is standing with our
1940 Ford Staff
Car in Atascadero
during Pearl Harbor
Remembrance
Ceremonies.
Photo/text
Jim Messinieo.
1. "On December 3rd, our Navy Staff Car had the honor of appearing
at the Faces of Freedom Veteran's Memorial in Atascadero. The
event was to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the attack on
Pearl Harbor, and the featured guest was Pearl Harbor Survivor
Lester Lindow, who served aboard the battleship USS Maryland.
The event was capped with a flyover by our very own Warbirds.
Les posed for a photo with our staff car, and said that he once also
had to drive an Admiral around in a similar car. Lester and his
daughter left the next day for Hawaii, sponsored by VFW Post
2814 and Honor Flight Central Coast to attend the ceremonies held
at Pearl Harbor on the 7th. Thank you Les, for your service!"
2. EWM—Mr. Bob Gardyne is 90. He is the last liv-
ing soldier of his regiment. His wife, whom he
met while serving, has since passed. Both worked
for NASA, he as an engineer. They have both
been invited to dine at the White House with
President Roosevelt! He was a 2d LT of the
303rd Detachment up to 1946 at which time he
went into the C.I.C. (Combat Information Cen-
ter). Once in the C.I.C. the rankings stopped and
most of his work was sealed information. He was
Counter Intelligence Corps before the CIA and
FBI, involved “behind the curtain”, designing
missions and operations. He had critical respon-
sibilities in "Operation Paperclip“ (Google it).
On December 27, Mr. Gardyne and his guests
were taken on a private tour of EWM/WAD,
escorted by Betty Miller, Peter Snyder and Ren
Stelloh. Our guests, including Son-In-Law Robert
Wiliams, made a generous donation! For that
and especially for Mr. Gardyne’s service to our
Country, we Thank You!
3. We were privileged to have LCDR USN (RET) Thomas D. Robins stop by the Curator’s office for a visit. This WWII Veteran served as a B-24 turret gunner, hunted enemy submarines, and served on the following aircraft carriers: USS Salerno Bay (1946); USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, USS Philippine Sea, and USS Midway (1949-52) (1961) (1969-71); USS Oriskany (1956); USS Yorktown (1956-58); USS Bon Homme Richard, (1959-60); USS Enterprise (1965-66); USS Kitty Hawk (1966 - 68); and USS Ticonderoga “Lest We Forget” (1969). Thank you for your service to our country!

Air And Space— To counter increasing
Soviet submarine activity in the Cold War,
the U.S. Navy relied on recommissioned
WWII destroyers, which were too small to
carry crewed helicopters, to carry drones
instead. Soon on the scene: the first rotary
winged remotely piloted aerial vehicle,
DASH (Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter) .
Developed by Gyrodyne Co. of Long Island,
NY, the DASH had two rotors opposing each
other, eliminating the need for a tail rotor.
Seen above in business attire (two Mark 44
torpedoes) the extremely high cost of build-
ing and operating these ship-borne drones
changed their mission from sub hunting to
target towing, or, like a lot of things that
don’t’ really work out: targets themselves.

Fat Albert, Marines In Close Order Drill
Lynne Ludwick Higgins wrote the
book, The Box, and will be talking
about why she was compelled to
write this memoir. Forty
years after her uncle lost his
life in Vietnam, she received
a gift from a Viet Cong vet-
eran who was in the very
battle that claimed her
Uncle, Ed Schultz. Lynne will
explain how this came to be.
She will talk a little of her
childhood growing up in San Luis
with her uncle Ed, who was only 3
years her senior. To Lynne,
her uncle
represents
all young
draftees of the
time, and she feels
that the gift she
received was meant
for all who lost
someone in that
war….on both sides.
This is a program in
everyone’s wheelhouse.
Be in Thompson Hall March 1 for
this presentation.
