Epiroc Donates Rock Drillto Colorado School of Mines

Epiroc, a productivity partner of the min-ing and infrastructure industries, has donateda COP 1238K rock drill to the ExcavationEngineering and Earth Mechanics Institute(EMI) at the Colorado School of Mines. TheCOP 1238K hydraulic rock drill for tunnel-ing and drifting applications updates testingequipment at EMI, the largest independentrock drilling and excavation research facilityin the world.Located in Golden, Colo., the Colorado

School of Mines is known globally for itsunique expertise in topics related to earth, energy and the environment. EMI was estab-lished in 1974 to enhance education andresearch in the field of excavation technolo-gy for mining and civil underground con-struction, and the Institute has become one ofthe world’s leading research facilities.Over its 45 years of existence, EMI has

developed a suite of physical property tests, cutter and cutterhead evaluation proceduresfor performance prediction, project costingand design of mechanical rock excavationtools for all types of mechanical excavatorsin mining, civil underground constructionand microtunneling. The developed test pro-cedures and performance/cost predictionmodels have been validated with extensivefield data from excavation and drilling proj-ects around the world. The rock drill donation came about

through collaboration between ShawnCheney, Epiroc Business Line manager —Rock Drilling Tools, and Jamal Rostami, director of the Earth Mechanics Institute. Amember of the EMI industrial advisory

board, Cheney facilitated the donation of theCOP 1238K to replace EMI’s decades-oldtesting drill. The new test cell installationwas completed in February 2019.“Epiroc has tremendous appreciation for

and confidence in the work that EMI does,”Cheney said. “We recently partnered withEMI on a project related to the cutting tech-nology on our Mobile Miner. We’re honoredto donate equipment that will help EMI con-tinue to serve as a valuable resource for themining and civil underground constructionindustries.”Developed to maximize impact power

while optimizing durability in undergroundapplications, the COP 1238K is optimized athole diameters from 2 to 3.5 in. and has apower rating of 12kW. It features a built-inreflex damper that contributes to improveddrill steel economy and reduces wear on therock drill, feed and boom. A powerful step-less variable and reversible rotation motorprovides high torque and excellent speedcontrol. In addition, a long, slender pistonmatched to the drill steel delivers optimalimpact power without damaging the drillsteel.“We greatly appreciate the generosity of

Epiroc,” Rostami said. “The COP 1238Krock drill donation gives EMI the opportuni-ty to perform full-scale testing using the lat-est in rock drilling technology. This test unitwill drive research that contributes to moreefficient and safer drilling operations in theindustries we support.”For more information, visit
