Why do you want to be CzechDays Queen? “I have attendedCzech Days for as long as I canremember. It would be an honor tohave the opportunity to be anambassador of this great celebra-tion and all it represents. MyCzech Heritage is very importantto me and becoming queen wouldallow me to be a role model forother young women and otherswho want to become passionateabout their heritage as well.”

What does Czech Days mean toyou? “Czech Days is a time whenpeople from the region gather tocelebrate their Czech Heritage.People welcome Czech customspassed down through generationsand continue to pass on traditionsto future generations.”

met at the Fryn' Pan Restaurant onSaturday May 22, 2010. ClubPresident Jeremy Skrenes calledthe meeting to order and askedHarry Voelzke to give the invocationand lead the Pledge of Allegiance.Skrenes served as Toastmaster ofthe Day and called on master evalu-ator John Swensen to introduceother members with duties; MikeArens as speech evaluator, KevinBuhl as ah counter, and Carol Haleas grammarian. Joy Winther gave apresentation on parliamentary pro-cedure from the “Abstracts Concept”Manual of ToastmastersInternational. Winther began thepresentation with an overview of thetypes and purposes of motions (at ameeting) and then she describedthe proper procedures to presentand dispose of a motion. The pres-entation included handouts and roleplaying by several members on pre-senting, discussing, and voting on amotion. There was no table topicsession at the meeting due to thelength of Winther's presentation.John Swensen led the evaluationportion of the meeting and askedMike Arens to evaluate Joy Wintherand then gave a brief evaluation ofthe entire meeting. Jeremy Skrenesadjourned the meeting.

Yankton Toastmasters Club 1294meets each Saturday from 7:30-8:40 AM at the Fryn' Pan Restaurantand guests are always welcome to

ASHH TOASTMASTERSKary Beltz led the invocation at

Avera Sacred Heart HospitalToastmasters June 3 meeting heldat noon in the Benedictine Center.Beltz prayed that she would slowdown and enjoy the life around her.She also counted the votes. Beltzwas introduced by the Toastmasterof the Day, Muriel Stach.

Table Topics Master was JaneMiller. She asked questions about“June” weddings and traditions.She questioned Beltz about chang-ing parts of her wedding if she coulddo it over. Miller asked Greg Stachabout any wedding advice hereceived. Miller then solicited GaleVogt's answer to the most unusualwedding he has attended. The 3-way tie for Best Respondent went toStach, Beltz and Vogt.

Mindy Schweitzer was the mainspeaker. Her goals were to give a 5to 7 minute researched speech thatwould give data to back up her opin-ions and point of view. Schweitzertalked about kidney cancer, “The 'C'Word”, relating details of her father'sillness and road to recovery. Shewas awarded the Best Speaker tro-phy.

The Best Evaluator's award wentto Vogt who gave helpful hints toSchweitzer. Vogt suggested thatSchweitzer not use “excuse me”during her speeches and applauded

her for the good statistics she gaveabout kidney cancer and its symp-toms.

Eileen O'Connor was theGeneral Evaluator and the Sergeantat Arms. O'Connor had the roomprepared and her team ready. TimBohn timed the speakers. EricTaylor tracked the unneeded usageof fillers, like 'so'. Sheryl Schwartznoted the special words and phras-es that speakers used, especially“viva”, her word of the day.

President Bohn discussed theinstallation of new officers at a partyin July at his home. He reviewed thecooking contest for that party andnext week's schedule beforeadjourning the meeting.

CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THEAMERICAS

A 6:00 p.m. potluck was enjoyedby all for the May meeting of the

Catholic Daughters of the Americas-Court Willard #967. In honor of the“Year of the Priests” all local clergywere invited to join the court.

The monthly meeting wasopened by Regent Velma Kuchta.She welcomed everyone includingguests and new members. EdnaDendinger and Evelyn Cimpl intro-duced their guests. Regent Kuchtaoffered our most sincerest thanksand appreciation for all that our cler-gy do throughout the days, weeksand years. Their tireless devotion isall very much appreciated. The Yearfor Priests is meant to benefit ourpriests, but it is also meant to bene-fit all of us. Our priests give theirlives for us. Regent Kuchta alsooffered our blessings and prayersfor Deacon Paul King as he will beordained soon. She also thankedMsgr. Hermann for being such afaithful chaplain to our Court and to

Fr. Bob for his ministry of being ourState Chaplain.

The treasurer’s report was givenby Treasurer Patti Paul. The reportwas approved and seconded.

Correspondence: RecordingSecretary Cyndi Hunhoff read thecards and letters that had beenreceived.

Financial Report: FinancialSecretary Cheryl Hovorka asked thatdues be paid.

Old Business: Deacon Paulthanked the court for the gift of moneyfor his vestments; Mary Althoffinformed us about the 90+ Party heldat Majestic Bluffs; Leah Smith thankedeveryone that had helped serve thebanquet.

New Business: Mass onSaturday, July 10, 2010, 9:00 a.m. -with Bishop Swain at the House ofMary Shrine. Court Willard has beeninvited to make and serve brunch.Cheryl Lemon asked for volunteers

to help with the placement of flagsfor Memorial Day. Meet at the ceme-tery on May 27, Thursday, at 5:30p.m. July 9, 2010 - Pillow Cleaning.Rose Hauger of the nominatingcommittee presented the court withthe list of nominees for the upcom-ing election. They are as follows:Regent-Janice Cass, Vice Regent-Bev Schmidt, Financial Secretary-Kerri Konechne, Treasurer-MaryJohnson, Recording Secretary-MaryAlthoff. Nominations were also opento the court. No other nominationswere made. The motion was madeand approved for each office.Regent Velma Kuchta thanked theMay Committee and adjourned themeeting. Father Bob lead the courtin the May Crowning of Mary in thechurch.

The next meeting will be on June17 at Sacred Heart. Our new officerswill be installed at this meeting.

Why do you want to be Czech

Days Queen? “My running forCzech Days Queen is a way ofexpressing my love for our com-munity and heritage. Through myparents and grandparents, I havelearned the importance of ourCzech History. Even as a younggirl, I dreamed of being CzechDays Queen. I have never missed aCzech Days celebration, it is veryimportant to me. When I repre-sented our town as Princess at age7, I felt truly honored and wouldlove to continue this as a youngwoman, proud of my heritage.”

What does Czech Days mean toyou? “Czech Days means so manythings. The first thing that comesto mind is excitement. The gather-ing of friends and family. Dressingup in my Kroj. Dancing in theSokol Park. The sound of Czechmusic playing. Walking intoBeseda Hall and smelling thesauerkraut, and eyeing the kolach-es. Seeing people so happy andsmiling, and enjoying one another.It is all such a delight, it is quitepossibly the best time of the year.”

Three area young ladies are competing for Czech Days Queen during the 62nd annual celebration on June 17-19 in Tabor. Areas of competition include a community vote, talent, costume, and personal interviews.The contestants will have their costumes judged at 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, and will perform their talent on the Sokol Park stage later on that day at 7 p.m.

Why do you want to be CzechDays Queen? “I would like to beCzech Days Queen to learn aboutCzech Heritage and to have aCzech experience with people forCzech Days. I am running forCzech Days Queen for my family.Czech Days helps to make smalltowns keep the towns historiesalive, like the town of Tabor. Thatis why this is one of the biggestthings for South Dakota fortourist attractions from othercities. The kolaches made by theCzechs are one of their favoritefoods and we enjoy eating themwith our families on Czech Days.”

What does Czech Days mean

to you? “The feelings I have forCzech Days are fun and exciting.It is good to have the traditionsby the Czechs. The Beseda Hallhosts all the families from thenear towns when they visitTabor. The people can learn fromtheir heritage by enjoying thecompany of families and friends.Czech Days is to have fun and toenjoy the festival for the Czechs.It is about the community of thetown and how the communitykeeps the town alive for lettingpeople come to Czech Days. Thepeople that come can honortheir ancestors that came fromEurope. I would be happy to rep-resent Tabor as Czech DaysQueen and learn from all otherqueens from past Czech Days. If Iget the experience, it will begreat for me because I will berepresenting all of the town ofTabor and what Czech Daysstands for, for me and the peopleof the town.”

The Rivercity Harmony Sweet Adelines(S.A.) motored to Winnipeg, Manitobaaboard Kelly’s Koaches to compete in theinternational CAN-AM Region 6 2010 S.A.Convention and Competition.

This region includes Minnesota, NorthernIowa, Eastern South Dakota, North Dakotaand Southern Manitoba. Of this area about650 S.A. attended this convention.

On Friday, May 21, we all attended alearning session. S.A. is always teaching andhelping ladies to sing even better. This ses-

sion was on movement and body strengthhelping to project better sound. It was muchenjoyed by everyone.

Friday evening everyone enjoyed a superquartet competition with outstanding singingand costumes.

On Saturday morning the Yankton Chorusunder the direction of their new well knownand respected director, Ethel Cooper, had awarm up for the afternoon competition.

In stage makeup and shimmery costumesthey competed with the under 30 Class A

group. Followed by Class AA of 30 to 60members finishing off with the City of LakesChorus, Minn. with over 70 members - ourladies were most happy with many improvedscores!

The ladies are very happy to welcometheir great new director Ethel Cooper andare looking forward to a busy summer andfall of happy music.
