did a visual inspection of the home, as well as from ahome inspector, who conducted a more thorough test-ing of all of the surfaces in the apartment, which ismore than 75 years old.

The verdict?“There was lead everywhere,” Chojnowski said.In the best interests of the family, Mayorga and her

three kids were promptly relocated to a hotel in WestLong Branch, where they will remain until Mayorga’slandlord gets the lead abated.

Where you least expect it

The situation was not unique to Mayorga’s run-downrental, however. In 2010, when state-mandated bloodtests revealed that their then 1 ½ year-old son, Ari, hada lead level of 12, Ellen and Adam Cohen had to con-front the fact that their quaint, turn-of-the-centuryhome on a leafy street in Red Bank was harboring thesame silent intruder.

“We’ve been in the house for seven years,” Ellen, 42,said, “and neither of our older children — Jake, 7, orBrooke, 4 — had any problems with lead. We believeAri’s reading was a temporary one caused by dust thathad been generated by construction in our house lastyear when we converted our attic into additional livingspace.”

Still, state law mandated the removal of the lead,and the entire house had to be professionally scrubbed,a tedious three-day ordeal that cost the Cohens $11,000.

“It’s so ironic,” Ellen said. “We’re so vigilant aboutthe kids, feeding them organic food whenever we can,putting gates on the stairs, etc. But even taking all ofthose precautions didn’t help avoid this situation,which was beyond our control.”

Its presence as a quiet threat is one of the reasonsNew Jersey law requires lead testing as part of thebloodwork done on children at the ages of both 1 and 2.

“Though lead is a natural substance in the environ-ment, exposure to high concentrations can affect thedevelopment of the brain and nervous system, espe-cially in young children,” said Dr. Richard A. Reutter, adevelopmental behavioral pediatrician affiliated withMonmouth Medical Center in Long Branch.

“Exposure to lead can increase the risk for learningdisabilities, ADD, hyperactivity disorder and anemia,and very high levels can cause mental retardation andseizures,” he said.

Though early symptoms can include fever, vomit-ing, hyperactivity and loss of appetite, “kids can oftenseem normal and symptoms may not appear untilyears later, when the child is of school age and seri-ously affected,” he said.

A lead education

As part of her role with VNACJ, Chojnowski helpsto both identify and educate families on the sources oflead poisoning in a home.

“If the paint used in a home was manufacturedbefore 1978, there’s a high likelihood that it containslead,” she said, referring to the U.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission’s ban on lead-containing paint fromthat year forward, an action taken “to reduce the riskof lead poisoning in children who may ingest paintchips or peelings,” according to the U.S. Office of In-formation and Public Affairs.

“Lead exposure can definitely be a concern in olderhomes, particularly where the paint is deteriorating,such as in the trim around windows and doors, and itcan also be inhaled as the result of dust created fromrenovations,” she said.

Chojnowski warned of other less-obvious sources oflead as well, such as some candy and pottery importedfrom Mexico, the wicks in certain candles and paint onspecific toys imported from world markets.

According to Reutter, the effect that lead poisoningcan have on a child depends on how high the lead levelswere and how long the child was exposed.

In terms of treatment, “chelation therapy is oftenused to bind the lead to an agent that the body is able toexcrete more readily, but it’s not clear that the therapywill reverse damage that’s already been done fromlead poisoning, which is why early detection andscreening is critical and why it’s important to reducethe source as much as possible,” he said.

Following his initial lead evaluation in 2010, 2 ½year-old Ari Cohen has since tested normal. AnthonyMayorga’s levels from this summer have reduced byhalf and, while his case still requires monitoring, bothboys appear to be happy and healthy following theirordeal.

“If you’re shopping for an older home, it’s definitelysomething to consider,” Cohen said. “And you reallyhave to watch your child.”

“I didn’t know we had lead in our apartment, but Ifeel safe and happy now that I understand the situa-tion,” Mayorga added. “It’s important to protect chil-dren from lead.”

No cardiac-related deaths occurred among thechildren evaluated and discharged from the clinicsduring the study time frame, the Children’s Hospital/Harvard study said.

Researchers said a widespread fear of sudden car-diac death in children has been fanned by a few highlypublicized cases where young athletes died for noapparent reason. Also, studies highlighting the devel-opment of heart disease in obese teens may have addedto concerns.

The estimated incidence of pediatric sudden cardi-ac death ranges from 0.6 to 6.2 deaths per 100,000, thestudy noted.

Dr. Jeffrey Boris, a cardiologist and associate pro-fessor of pediatrics at the University of PennsylvaniaSchool of Medicine, said there are ways parents candetermine if a child’s chest pain is cardiac-caused andneeds urgent attention. One technique is to push on thechest wall, and if the pain is reproducible, it’s not aheart problem. Also, if the chest pain episode is brief,or the child can move around and participate in activ-ities, it’s not cardiac-related.

“A classic heart attack is persistent,” Boris said.“On a scale of one to 10, it’s truly a 10. It’s the worstpain you can imagine, like someone beating really hardon your chest, or an elephant stomping on you.”

Danger signals are chest pains accompanied by afever, sweating, trouble breathing or a very rapidheart rate, he said.
