PASS AmeriCorps Program is
what allows us to make a differ-
ence in the lives of our students.
In May and June, our PASS Ameri-
Corps Service Members are de-
ciding the next steps in their jour-
neys. Some are choosing to serve
another year with PASS, some are
moving on to graduate school, and
some are finding jobs in their cho-
sen career field.
We wish all our students and
Service Members the best, and
expect to hear great things from
them in the future.
Have a fantastic summer and we’ll
see you in the new school year!
The 2017-18 school year is coming
to a close and we can’t believe how
fast the year has gone! We are
grateful to the PASS AmeriCorps
Service Members who gave a year
to serve our youth and communi-
ties in San Diego County. Some of
them lived here locally; some of
them were serving a second, third,
or even fourth year with PASS
AmeriCorps; and some of them
took a leap of faith and moved
across country to dedicate a year
of their lives working with our
students. Thank you so much for
your service!
Thank you, also, to all our school
site Points of Contact,
administrators, teachers,
school staff, and other
partner organizations;
your support and commit-
ment to your schools,
communities, and the

Completing 2017-18 with PASS AmeriCorps
In May, the PASS AmeriCorps Pro-
gram hosts an event called “Life After
AmeriCorps.” This event provides
resources and networking opportuni-
ties for our Service Members as they
transition out of their year of service
with PASS AmeriCorps. Presenta-
tions ranged from the Segal Educa-
tion Award to the AmeriCorps
Alumni Association, and more. We
want to thank all our presenters for
the day: current PASS AmeriCorps
Members,
Amy
DeNinno,
Jose
Romero,
and Jen-
nifer Ho-
pek for
presenting on Travel and Work
Abroad; Dan Puplava from SDCOE
Risk Management for presenting on
the 3121 Retirement Plan; and Bob
Mueller, Executive Director of
SDCOE’s Student Services and Pro-
grams for presenting on the Science
of Happiness. Thank you to our
AmeriCorps Alumni Panel for shar-
ing their experiences and advice:
Rosalina Herrera, Juleane Johnson,
and Lizz Kolokowsky. A highlight of
the day was the rotating café con-
versations in which our current
Members were able to speak with
professionals in a field of interest.
Thank you to all the individuals who
came out to speak with us: Gabriela

have done it all. The 5th grade

Camp Cuyamaca Outdoor
School in Julian, CA. I joined
PASS and non-PASS students
for two days and one night,
alongside Laurel's 5th grade

Cuyamaca was an opportunity
for our students to open their
minds to nature's sights,
sounds, and unique wildlife.
Thank you PASS AmeriCorps

opening my mind to a world of
knowledge and new perspec-
tives. I will forever cherish the
relationships I’ve made

months, not only with my
students, but also with Laurel

Hello from Mission! With
school nearly coming to an
end, the months of May
and June are super busy.
We had testing, field trips,
5th grade camp, open
house, and Gold Rush Day.
Students did amazing dur-
ing the tough testing days. I
attended two fun field trips
with 3rd graders to Agua
Hedionda Lagoon and to
improvement. On Gold Rush
Day, students learned to
square dance, searched for
gold, learned to make pancakes
with bacon, and created art.
For the month of June, we will
be having 7 more days left of
classes, so there's plenty of
planning for fun closing activi-
ties. Go Dolphins!
Oceanside Museum of Art,
where they got to tour an
exhibit and create their own
art pieces out of wire. There
have been so many other
things going on as well, but
within PASS we have been
focusing on goals for the end
of this year and next year,
along with using our End of
Year Pizza Party and Legoland
as motivation to keep stu-
dents’ behavior in check. We
have spent several recesses in
the garden watering the car-
rots for Mrs. Crouthamel,
which yielded an incredibly
large amount of carrots before
we even did a full harvest. For
the 5th graders, everything has
been leading up to Promotion,
which was their time to shine
and a wonderful way to end
the year. Have a great sum-
mer!
It’s hard to believe
the end of the school
year is already here.
May was the month
of field trips, starting
with the 3rd grade
trip to the Safari
Park, which I was
lucky enough to
chaperone. The next
two weeks in a row I accom-
panied all of the 5th graders
(on 3 different days) to the
PASS stu-
dents, David
and Faisal,
enjoying
their field
trip at Agua
Hedionda

It’s a bittersweet feeling knowing
this will be the last newsletter for
the year. I feel blessed and fortu-
nate to have had such an amazing
experience. I fell for the students
but also for those who work here. I
have learned so much this school
year and I am grateful for this won-
derful experience. Next Mentor
will be lucky to work at a school
where they put the students first
and want the best for them. I will
miss everyone but I walk away with
gratitude and appreciation to every-
one who welcomed me in. As a
thank you to the staff and teachers,
the students and myself wanted to
show appreciation to everyone at
Cesar Chavez Middle School. The
students made bookmarks out of
construction paper and decorated
them by using positive adjectives
describing their last name. The
students got very creative . My
favorite one was from an 8th grad-
er who wrote on Mr. Lao's book-
mark " 1x3=?". Thank you once
again and have a wonderful sum-

school year coming to a close, our
PASS mentors are also looking
toward their futures. Mr. Steven

return to Lincoln Middle School for
a second year of PASS. Thank you
May is the beginning of words such
as "maybe", and "mayonnaise" - but
is also the beginning of the end... of
the school year. We are delighted
that, as the year comes to an end,
many of our 8th grade PASS stu-
dents achieved their goal of walking
at the graduation ceremony. Amidst
the standardized testing atmos-
phere, students were still able to
flex their creative minds with pro-
all for journeying with us
during this amazing experi-
ence and we wish you all a
wonderful summer and a
bright future!
and so much more! It has been such a
joy to watch the students change
from the beginning of the year and
see how much they have grown. I
hope the students continue on this
great path and make even greater
progress as they move onto the next
grade and onto high school. I will miss
my students greatly and can't wait to
see what their futures hold. It has
been such a great experience here at
Jefferson and I cannot wait to come
back and visit.
Hello from Jefferson Middle School!
The end of the school year is quick-
ly approaching. We have been
working hard to stay on top of our
school work and finish out the year
strong. We have been challenged
this year but we have made it out
on top! It has been such a great
year watching all of the PASS stu-
dents make great progress and see
their true potential. We have
worked on grades, attendance,
future goals, making better choices

As we come to a close for our
2017-18 school year here at
MLK MS, we are filled with
gratitude and excitement. We
have spent the last month
preparing our eighth graders
for their high school transition,
supporting our seventh graders
as they become the leaders of
the pack, and encouraging our
sixth graders to continue their
valient efforts. PASS has set up
a Peer Advising group that is
open to eighth graders during
lunch to discuss any concerns
they have for their next chap-
ter. They took time to discuss
a range of topics from study
habits, to social situations, to
groups, clubs and activities on
campus. PASS also teamed up
with Dr. Dunning to support
the students with less than a
2.0 GPA by providing tutoring
and homework club hours
after school to ensure Promo-
tion for as many students as
possible. It is with great sad-
ness that our time is coming to
an end but we are forever
proud of what our staff, facul-
ty, and students have been able
to accomplish this year.

work in international affairs,
and Angel wants to pursue a
career in game design. The
PASS room has gotten busier
these past few weeks with
many students participating in
fun activities during lunch and
after school. With summer
around the corner, the stu-
dents have been preparing for
finals and working hard to
improve their grades and at-
tendance. We are proud to say that
some of our students have regis-
tered for summer school to make
up missing credits or prepare for
next year. It has been an awesome
year building relationships with
students and helping them realize
their potential.
First and foremost, we would
like to send our greatest con-
gratulations to Cristian, Khadi-
jah, and Angel who will be
graduating this year.
Their hard work and
dedication to their edu-
cation have finally paid
off. We are excited to
announce that our stu-
dents will be attending

next year to pursue
their dreams. Cristian

The school year is winding down and
it is a bittersweet time for our school
family. Although I am happy to see my
students spread their wings and move
on to new adventures, it is also diffi-
cult to say goodbye to mean-
ingful relationships. The end
of the year is also a busy time
as students finish up classes
and complete credits. Our
Senior Awards Night is on Thursday,
May 31st, and graduation for the class
of 2018 is on June 6th. This year has
truly been incredible. I am grateful for
PASS and the Ocean Shores family for
their support. I would like to take the
time to thank all of the PASS supervisors
and program staff, but specifically Teenie
Le who has been invaluable to me as a
supervisor and I am always glad for her
guidance. I would also like to thank Tina
Callahan. Not only is she an amazing ad-
vocate for our students, but she is also a
supportive principal and I am so happy we
have gotten to work together for the last
two years.
