Thanks to the expertise and dedication of local teachers and administrators, the teacher prepa-ration program at Ohio University offers a di-verse array of clinical experiences for teacher candidates. When surveyed, most graduates of teacher preparation programs acknowledge that the most valuable part of their program was the time they spent teaching in classrooms. So let me begin by thanking all teachers and school leaders for contributing so significantly to the preparation of tomorrow’s teachers. The guidance and opportunities you provide preservice teachers is vitally important, and your efforts are deeply appreciated. Recently, a group of teachers, administrators and local schools have been working with Ohio University’s Patton College to provide an extended year-long clinical experience culminating with the professional internship (student teaching). Over the past two years, approximately 20 graduate and undergraduate Adolescent-to-Young-Adult (secondary) majors have volunteered to participate in the program. (cont. on page 2)

(cont. from page 1) The feedback on the extended clinical experience program has been very pos-itive. Teacher candidates have told us the extended time in the field has helped them form deeper relationships with students, better understand a full year of instructional activities, provide more informed feedback to students, plan better for their professional internships and make a smoother, easier tran-sition to the internship. The cooperating teachers have been equally enthusi-astic. They have told us that the longer time in the classroom makes teacher candidates more valuable contributors to student learning. Based on the positive response to the program, approximately 60 Special Ed-ucation, Middle Childhood, and Adolescent-to-Young-Adult majors have volun-teered for year-long placements in 2012-13. Each of these teacher candi-dates understands the vital importance of classroom experience when learn-ing how to teach. We are delighted to report school leaders and teachers also recognize the potential of these extended experiences and have been working diligently with us to arrange placements for these teacher candidates. These efforts are part of Ohio University’s move to a clinically-based model of teacher education. In this model, teaching practice forms the foundation for learning, rather than coursework. Instead of learning how to teach in courses and then apply that knowledge in the field, teacher candidates are learning through practice that is supported by coursework. As ever, we are so deeply grateful to the hundreds of teachers and administrators who so generously share their expertise with The Patton College of Education teacher candidates. The effectiveness of Ohio University’s teacher preparation program is due in significant part to your ef-forts. Thank you very much.

NCATE Accreditation
The Patton College of Education is accredited by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Maintaining national accreditation is a rigorous process and we appreciate the support of our P-12 partners. As the on site visit approaches, we may be asking for your participation as we prepare our materials. We will also be asking some of you to participate in meetings with the site visitors. We are gearing up for our next on site visit. This fall each program will be submitting their Specialized Professional Association (SPA) reports. These reports include information on the assessments that are conducted in programs including scoring rubrics and data. The NCATE Institutional Report (IR) will be submitted in fall, 2013 and our on site visit is scheduled for fall, 2014. What is it? The TPA is a new performance-based assessment for all professional interns, beginning in fall semester. It is similar to the Teacher Work Sample (TWS), which interns have completed in the past. Why do I need to know about the TPA? It is a change, and sometimes change can be difficult. Information about this new assessment tool completed by interns may be helpful to you. Ohio Univer-sity, as well as other universities in Ohio and other states, have been piloting sections of the TPA with the intention of full implementation fall semester 2012. Will I have to do anything different to support my intern? One requirement is that interns videotape some lessons. The tape is for assess-ment purposes and is submitted to Pearson for evaluation. It will not be shared or viewed by others. How can I learn more?
