Fitness and HealthAS 2.1 (90432) Examine relationships between regular
exercise and concepts of fitness and health
What do we Mean by Health?
How do you know if you are Healthy?
What does society tell us is the ideal healthy male/female?
Health can be seen as a holistic thing – there is more than one part to it.
You would have looked at this before – the concept of Hauora
HAUORARemember that, Hauora is a Maori view of Health related to total wellbeing. In the past Health may have been related to the physical aspect fitness or the lack of it and the absence of disease.
The body was seen as a machine that had to be maintained – this concept is Healthism. We know that Health is more complicated than this

Hauora is dynamic. It changes depending on circumstances and all parts are interacting. Don’t think of them as acting in isolation
Your Health is dynamic – this means that it can change over time or even quickly
We are going to look at the Physical aspect in more detail:
Physical Activity is any bodily movement that requires movement of the body and some substantial effort and energy. This may range from a walk to competitive sport
Physical activity includes Recreation, Exercise and Fitness
RECREATION• Physical Activities done for
enjoyment and leisure
Fitness• The ability of the body to meet
environmental demands.• Fitness is relative – people have
different demands on them
Exercise• Is the link between Health
and Fitness.• It is the activity you do to
improve your Fitness. (remember there are a number of different components of fitness)
Ideas and Attitudes towards Exercise and Fitness
• Where do you get your ideas from?
Peoples ideas are generally determined by the environment they live in and the personal experiences they have had.
ExperienceA boy who is forced to run around the block everyday at primary school even though he hates running and it gives him asthma is more likely to develop a negative attitude .
EnvironmentA girls growing up in a sporting family who do lots of fun exercise together is more likely to develop a positive attitude to exercise.
Influences on attitudesMany factors may affect a persons attitude towards physical activity• Family• Friends and relationships• Time• Environment they live in• Previous experience• Access to facilities• Finances• Interests• Physical appearance

Is it possible to be fit and not healthy?
Is it possible to be healthy but not fit?
A number of people automatically take physical fitness to mean healthiness and vice versa. We see this regularly in the media.
Based on our definitions we know this is not the case as fitness and health have different meanings. Fitness is linked to the physical aspect of health but health has another three dimensions that are interlinked and dynamic.
Critical Discussion• May include social, historical,
political, cultural persectives• Compare and contrast• Pros and cons• Make a decision based on
evidence you have discussed
