By Kyle KnowlesThe Pages Rd bridge has gone from a rebuild to a repair.
This time last year, the bridge was to be demolished and replaced, but the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has changed this.
It has gone from a rebuild to a $500,000 repair.
While there is still a chance it could be rebuilt, those decisions
are not going to be made anytime soon. Minor repairs are slated for the start of 2016 and a final call on the bridge will not happen until authorities decide what to do with the land in the red zone.
CERA deputy chief executive implementation Warwick Isaacs said the uncertain future of the red zone surrounding the Pages Rd bridge was the reason for the change to a repair.
“Long-term decisions around the Pages Rd bridge will be considered in the context of horizontal infrastructure requirements for
the future use of the red zone. It has been changed to a repair at this stage until these decisions have been made.”
New Brighton Business and Land Owners Association manager Paul Zaanen said this was not good enough and the community was not told of the change.
“This is one the local community needs to be informed about.

St John is celebrating the re-opening of its New Brighton hall at Rawhiti Domain following a $165,000 repair and refurbishment.
The hall, which has been owned by St John for more than 40 years, is to be offi-cially reopened and rededi-cated today at 6pm.
Members of the local community, and guests in-cluding Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson will be in attendance along with St John staff, vol-unteers and Youth members.
St John Christchurch chair-man Graham Gillespie said the hall was severely damaged in the 2011 earthquake.
“After the hall was closed for safety reasons, we decided not to rush into a decision about its future,” Mr Gillespie said.
“It was important for us to consider what the best op-tion was, for the community and for St John. Eventually, it was decided that repairing, refurbishing and strength-ening the building was the right thing to do.”
The hall will be used as the base for the St John Bur-wood New Brighton Youth Division, and also by other parts of the organisation for training purposes.
“For example, it will be used for public first aid classes, as well as clinical training for our ambulance staff and volunteers.”
The hall is also avail-able for use by community groups in the east.
“It is important to St John to have a venue available for the community to use. The
eastern suburbs of Christ-church have suffered a great deal, so it is great to be a part of celebrating new be-ginnings in this community.
“Community groups in New Brighton and the east are able to book the venue for their own activities. We’re hoping that it will be very popular with many dif-ferent organisations.”
Mr Gillespie said St John is incredibly grateful to the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund, for a $100,000 grant towards the refurbishment and repair.
“The support of the council was invaluable to this project. Because of their support, we once again have a fantastic venue, available for use, by the whole com-munity.”
Hall reopens after repairs
• From page 1“I am very keen to see it
rebuilt and lessons should be learned from the other bridge repairs which have taken too long and had budget blowouts.”
Mr Zaanen said the Bridge St bridge was an example of how a rebuild would have been a better option than repair, which he fears could happen at the Pages Rd bridge.
“We’re advocating for a new bridge and traffic layout.
It is a gateway to Brighton and it really is a starting point for the suburb. For us understanding it was a rebuild and it’s now gone to a repair, we are questioning
why it has,” he said. A CERA spokeswoman said public engagement to determine what to do with the red zone land was expected to take place later this year.
New bridge off agendaNOT GOOD ENOUGH: Residents are disappointed the Pages Rd bridge has gone from a rebuild to a repair without consultation.

A FAREWELL TO OUR “AMOS”
&McMaster HeapVeterinary practice
Just prior to Christmas, we tragically lost our beautiful 11 year old Abbysinnian cat Amos. We arrived home from an awesome evening out with our staff to find him dead on our driveway. We suspected he had collided with a car, although he never leaves our section, except to keep an eye on our 12 month old cat Spartacus, who is a frequent visitor to the Canterbury University pigeon enclosure. Amos would sit at our letterbox and wait for Spartacus to cross the road safely, then Amos would chase him up our drive, basically telling him off.
On arriving home we found Spartacus stuck up our neighbours cabbage tree and Lola hiding in her kennel. They were both freaked out and very upset.
Nothing can prepare you for the sorrow and grief you feel on the loss of a treasured, valued, loved member of your family. It has been 12 years since I lost my faithful, awesome dog Tobias and 2 years since Eli our cat was put to sleep. Spartacus spent days calling and looking for Amos, lying on everything that had Amos’s smell on it. Our two teenage sons still cant talk about Amos and Isaac our 10 year old spent a lot of time very upset questioning why!
Amos was a battler. He successfully kept every cat off our section, despite his disability in having an entire hind paw amputated. We suspected as a tiny kitten he contracted Toxoplasmosis which caused hindleg paralysis, forcing me to amputate his left hind paw. This never slowed him up. Other various injuries included a severely fractured pelvis causing osteoarthritis, numerous cat fight wounds from protecting Spartacus and his territory and a near drowning.
He absolutely loved our family. He followed Steve around everywhere watching him mow lawns, hit balls on the court with the kids, cook in the kitchen and lie on Steve at night getting hours of chin scratches. He would hop onto a chariot designed for him especially and the boys would carry him into their rooms. Isaac spent hours in his basket reading or chatting to him. At night Spartacus and Amos would curl up together, after fastidiously grooming each other. Even Lola would try to get in on the fun. It would be fair to say he slept a
lot….he followed the sun around each room and the only thing that got him running was food!! Amos had a ravenous appetite, never turned food down and every food was his favourite. We loved him for that.
Where ever he is I know he’s looking after us all. A month on, it still hurts to talk about him. We look at heaps of photos and pour heaps of love into Spartacus, who even though we know he loves us, he really needs a feline companion around. Another cat to keep him in line, guard the section (as Spartacus isn’t that brave) and a play mate. Through a stroke of luck we may end up getting a relative of Amos’s, Piper. Piper is Amos’s ¾ brother and miraculously looks identical to our boy. We are excited to meet Piper and hopefully it will all work out. Will keep you posted.

Big day for BrightonBy Kyle KnowlesThe Speight’s Coast to Coast is on this weekend with New Brighton busi-nesses gearing up for a big day.
More than 10,000 people are ex-pected to flock to New Brighton to cheer on the competitors as they cross the finish line next to the pier.
New Brighton Business and Land-owners Association manager Paul Zaanen said businesses in the sub-urb were excited to have such a full calender of events and were putting on extra staff for the big week, which included the sandcastle competition held over the weekend.
“It’s going to be massive. The guys from the Coast to Coast have been stunning and the whole thing is going to be awesome with a festival atmos-phere on the foreshore”.
Pierside Cafe and Bar manager Amanda Gibson said they would be putting on extra staff and are expect-ing to make a lot of coffees over the weekend.
“I think it will be one of the biggest weekends for New Brighton in a long time.”
She said this event and others that have been on in New Brighton over summer were perfect to showcase what New Brighton has to offer. A band will be playing at the Pierside from 9pm.
Mr Zaanen said it was a nice parallel to have the rebuild of New Brighton alongside the rebuild of the Speight’s Coast to Coast.
“It’s huge that we get to tell the story of the rejuvenation of the Coast to Coast and New Brighton and it is nice
to link them”.The number of entries received for
this year’s race is the biggest in five years with a 35 per cent increase.
Last year 537 competitors entered but this year it is more than 700.
The first one-day event racers are expected to reach the finish line at about 5.30pm on Saturday.
The market has extended hours starting from 10am and Marine Pa-rade will be closed from Beresford St to Hawke St for activities and enter-tainment.
A big screen keeping the public up-dated on the race and sponsors tents are going to be set up next to the bas-ketball court and a fireworks display off the pier will cap the night off at 10.30pm.
Eastern Vision is also urging people to bike, bus or walk to New Brighton as finding a carpark will be difficult.
They are setting up temporary bike racks, which will be monitored.
This is the first time New Brighton has held the finish line after it had pre-viously been situated at Sumner.
PLACE TO BE: The layout of New Brighton on Saturday for the Speight’s Coast to Coast.
ONE TO WATCH: Winner of last year’s one day title Braden Currie begins the cycling leg in a previous event.

IS YOUR SCOPE OF WORKS CORRECT?
So Brenda, tell me a bit about yourself.
Well, I’m 46 and I have a whanau. My husband and I have been together for 22 years, and married for 15. We have eight children. Not all of them are ours – we have a bit of a blended whanau. My husband, Wairangi, works here at He Waka Tapu with me. He’s an alcohol and drug assessor and I am a whanau intervention assessor.
Where did you grow up and where do you live now?
I grew up in Timaru. We’ve only sort of come up here to Christchurch in the last five years. My husband wanted to complete his degree in alcohol and drug studies up here. He has finished it now and we live in Papanui.
You have more than 4500 supporters on your Ka Pai Me Facebook page. How did that start?
Well, I’ve always had a weight problem from the get-go, from when I was very young. The Facebook page happened in August last year. Things were
pretty tough for me and I was really wanting to make a change and didn’t know how. My work colleagues and I were trying to nut out something I could do. I was a bit resistant at first thinking about how it would go and how I would feel, blah de blah, but the page was set up and away I went. I post on it every day of how I’m going.
How did you feel about the support you received on the page?
In the beginning there were about five or 600 following and I was like ‘mean’. Then it started growing and growing and it got steady support building. From the time that I’ve had the page, I’ve had no negative comments.
Have you heard of other people following in your footsteps?
There are lots of people going on their own journeys. A lot of them private messaged me in the background because they didn’t want friends or whanau to know. There were maybe about 50 who have started their own journey. We all motivate each other and that sort of thing keeps me going and it’s that accountability. I really enjoy it and it’s quite therapeutic.
Can you tell me a bit about your 700-day health and fitness plan?
A 700-day journey of hardIn August, Brenda Warren was 199kg. She has a goal to lose 100kg during a 700-day health and fitness plan, and will take part in The Star City2Surf with Mike Pero Real Estate event next month. Reporter Bridget Rutherford chats to her about the journey, her training and the biggest challenges she has faced.
GETTING FIT: Brenda Warren performs at the kapa haka regionals in April last year before she began her health and fitness plan.

I am on day 165, it’s going really well. I see Daniel, the nutrition-ist here at He Waka Tapu, once a week and we look at food menus and exercise programmes and set goals. Then on Fridays we have the weigh-in. I do the exercise on my own.
Was it difficult to get motivated?
In the beginning I was ready. I did a 10-day count down before I started and that helped. I got to say goodbye to some of the foods that I love like Chinese, KFC, chocolate, fizzy and chocolate eclairs. Having that last pig-out and saying that’s it, no more helped me prepare myself for what I was going to do.
Had you tried anything like this before?
I’m a queen of lots of things. I’ve tried every single diet, pills and potions. I’ve tried Atkins, Sure Slim. They all work, but if you don’t have the head stuff straight it is hard. I did lose 50kg about three or four years ago but my head space was not in it. This time I’ve been able to put it out there. I was a bit shy but now I don’t care. There will be a lot of people feel-ing the same.
What prompted you to do it?My husband and I were talking
about how I had never tried hyp-nosis and it planted the seed again. There was a combination of things and I was ready to do it. I went to social media and I haven’t looked back really.
How is it going? I hear you have made some great progress.
Progress is going really well, you have some good weeks and some not so good weeks and it’s just working through them and I get to verbalise them as well. There was one week that I had 4kg put on and I was like ‘how did that happen’ but we worked through it and that’s what I do every week. It’s also learning about your body really. I’m 46-years-old and I’m still learning.
So do you have a target weight?I would love to get under 100kg.
I haven’t been that since I was in high school. I’m determined, no more, I’m not going to go back again, it’s too hard to start again
and I’ve done it countless times. If you don’t mind me asking,
what was your starting weight and where are you sitting now?
I started out at 199.5kg and I’m down to 172.1kg. I’ve got a long way to go but I’m getting there. I’m getting close to losing 30kg, I’m at 27.4kg now.
And I hear you are in training for the City2Surf next month, how is that going?
I am trying to do something every day, an 8.2km walk has been the biggest so far. We did a walk recently with about 35 friends, whanau and supporters from the page. Some went for a 3.2km walk and some others went for a 5km. We’re trying to do it every week before the City2Surf to prepare. I’m doing some swimming and
aqua zumba in the mornings so I’m up at 5.30am. I did the 6km last year when I was on a semi-diet but I struggled. But this year I am way fitter than what I was and will try the 14km.
What was the focus for you when you started the plan?
The focus for me was getting the kai right. We work on the food first, the exercise will come once you get in the buzz. I just started aqua-jogging three days a week. I’m a bit of an addict now, we just shake our booties and shake our wobbly bits and no-one cares.
Do you have goals or rewards along the way?
Every 10kg I lose, I give myself a reward. The first 20kg I lost I got my eyelashes done. When I get to 30kg I’m going to get my hair done. Usually my husband does it, he’s not the best hairdresser but I love him.
What advice would you give others who are wanting to do the same as you?
I think what they need to do is sit down and think about what they really want to do. If you don’t have that head space right you’re setting yourself up to fail. It’s baby steps and the 10-day count down is a good idea because they will truly understand what they are going to endeavour. The secret is having great support, even at work here we’re quite fit and healthy conscious. We feed off each other and they are amazing. I’m very blessed.

During January, the museum volun-teers began their new mission to pre-serve oral histories of New Brighton by interviewing New Brightonian of note, Kase Craig.
Kase grew up in New Brighton and learned ballet at the Marine Parade War Memorial Hall.
Today, Kase performs at the Grand Theatre de Bordeaux in France, in such roles as the prince in Swan Lake.
If you have an interesting story about growing up in New Brighton, visit and share this with the team.
It was also discovered that the highly popular New Brighton Museum fun-draising calendar for 2015 contains errors – if you own a copy, pop in to the museum to receive a replacement.
The volunteer team is working on a project on the New Brighton Power Boat Club.
If you have photos or memorabilia on the club, or know someone who does,
the team would greatly appreciate dona-tions or loans.
We also urge east Christchurch residents who are moving house to donate unwanted photographs or items linked to New Brighton history to the museum.
We appreciate the inclusion of details such as place, names, and dates.
Did you know:New Brighton has been home to
several household names? Todd Heller, founder and director of popular meats company Hellers, learned the ropes in a butchery in New Brighton.
Today the company distributes to supermarkets nationally, employs hun-dreds and wins awards for its innovative sausages.
Frank King was crowned Mr Universe while living in the United Kingdom and moved to New Brighton to manage the gymnasium at QE II.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel, was the MP representing Christchurch East for 14 years.
Learn more about influential New Brightonians at the New Brighton Museum.
The museum is open from 10am-noon Mondays, and every other day 1-3pm. We take bookings for school groups and community functions.

A body of research already exists showing aerobic exercise improves brain function in older adults, but there is a limited amount of
literature on how it affects young adults. The Otago researchers, led by Department
of Psychology senior lecturer Dr Liana Machado, set out to test the oft-held belief that the brains of young adults in their prime might not benefit as much as older people from regular sustained exercise.
They took 52 tertiary students, aged
between 18 to 30, and put them through a series of cognitive tests on a computer while measuring oxygen availability in the frontal lobe of their brains, as well as their self-reported exercise frequency.
Dr Machado says their “surprising” findings, just published online in the journal Psychophysiology, show that both blood supply to the brain and cognitive functioning appear to benefit from regular exercise in young adults.
“This provides compelling evidence that
regular exercise, at least five days per week, is a way to sharpen our cognitive ability as young adults – challenging the assumption that living a sedentary lifestyle leads to problems only later in life,” she says.
The research also provides potential insight into understanding why people who regularly engage in aerobic exercise tend to function better on a cognitive level.
“I think the idea that young people do not have to worry about exercising since they are in their prime developmentally is rapidly being overturned by mounting evidence that even the brains of young adults can benefit from regular exercise,” she says.
“The exercise could involve brisk walking or more vigorous activity, and could be made up of a few 10-minute bouts of exercise,
rather than one single block of exercise,” she says.
The researchers also found that body mass index was not a key factor in how well the brain functioned, indicating that regular engagement in physical activity may be more important than body weight.
Dr Machado says she had noticed over the years that university students appeared progressively less fit.
“I wondered whether we might find significant relationships between exercise levels, oxygen availability in the brain and cognition in the young adults, but no studies had considered this in healthy young adults.”
These findings come at a time of increased scientific focus on links between exercise and cognitive health in older adults.
Regular physical activity improves brain function even in young adults considered in their prime and at the height of cognitive ability, according to a new University of Otago study.

Selling the DreamTravel posters dating from the early to mid-20th century on display at
Canterbury Museum were celebrated with an event on January 29. Selling the Dream showcases some of the most iconic images which were used to sell New Zealand to tourists as a magical place to visit – the world’s dream destination.
Designed by an army of talented artists, the posters represent a golden age in this country’s tourism industry which was aimed at both international as well as domestic travellers. The cocktail party held at the museum was an opportunity for invited guests to browse the works and commemorate the skill which created them.Beverley Bolland, Rod Syme

Pupils soaked up their last days of freedom before school starts at the OSCAR Holiday Programme last week. The programme was run by Neighbourhood Trust at Mairehau Primary School and our Lady of Fatima School. The children had a blast with the Spencer Park Crazy Bikes day featuring a variety of novelty bikes. Other activities during the week included cupcake decorating, movies, a trip to Living Springs, and a water fun day. PHOTOS: ALLISON ALEXANDER

Lindisfarne was established in 1987 and is a small privately run nursery school. The separate nursery building caters for up to 14 babies,
and the preschool is licenced for up to 36 children. We pride ourselves on providing as much a home-like environment as possible for all of the children who attend Lindisfarne.
Our team consists of all trained and registered teachers, a teacher’s aide, a teaching assistant, and a cook and cleaner.
We pride ourselves on being a multi-cultural centre, both through the
nationalities of the children who attend and the nationalities of our teaching staff.
The large private play area allows the children to engage in lots of physical activities as well as imaginative play. Our on-site primary school teacher ensures all children are well-prepared to start primary school.
The new themes have been available in-store in January and already have a strong vote of approval from parents booking parties.
New themes include Frozen, Circus, Ladybug and Monster Truck.
They all come with brilliant invitations that will look great on party guests’ fridges until party day.
And Frozen will not be out of place in our summer heat. All party rooms are air conditioned for your comfort.
Our traditional children’s favourite themes of Pirate, Princess, Dinosaur and Charlie Chipmunk are still available and in demand.
Early bookings are essential to ensure the theme of your choice.
In 2013, the government announced changes to the laws around child restraints. The changes require mandatory use of a child restraint for children up to 7 years
of age, and the use of an appropriate child restraint if there is one available until 8 years old. This new law came into effect on November 1, 2013.
This means that if your child aged between 5 and 7 years has moved to the vehicle seatbelt on their own, they will need to return to a booster seat.
Plunket and other child safety advocates continue to encourage booster seat use for
Privately run nursery school
Families are more than welcome to call in at any time to view the programme and meet the teachers.
Booster seats for childreneven longer, as research shows that until a child is around 148 centimetres tall, they need a booster seat to get the best protection in a crash.
Plunket is pleased to give advice to anyone unsure of their position regarding this change in legislation. They hire and sell all types of child restraints, including booster seats, and will install these in your vehicle free of charge. They also offer free advice and guidance so you can be sure you are giving your child the best protection when they travel in your vehicle.

Secret haven in St Martins
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this character double brick home is truly a peaceful
oasis in the city.Entering the welcoming wide hallway,
the high stud ceilings emphasise the space on offer with large kitchen, dining and lounge that, while open plan, can be separated off with bi-fold doors as required.
The four bedrooms include a double and single study on the ground floor and two ample doubles on the first floor. The property offers real potential for future enhancement while being a lovely family home now.
Sit on the quiet sunny deck in the evenings or enjoy the manicured grounds with a spacious lawn for kids to play. Add to this the excellent double garage and ample off-street parking. This is a home that should be top of your list to view.
