However, we are grateful for what we were able to accomplish from January to December, through the efforts that we put in our work and through different supporters. We are excited to share with you different experiences we encountered in 2015, as highlighted in this

Our Projects
Mobile computer labMainly intended to teach public primary school students on basic
computer knowledge, and how they can use this technology to
learn more about other lessons like Mathematics, English, nature
and so forth
She Inspire TanzaniaThis project is for inspiring teenage girls/boys, and youths from
the age of 18-35 years. We focus in raising their awareness and
capacity building activities in different areas such as self-awareness,
communication and presentation skills, HIV/AIDS awareness, Hygiene,
Menstrual and Reproductive health. We tailor these courses according
to age specific.
Youth Hub CentrePen Tanzania has established a youth hub center, where youths
come and learn different things. At the center we have a computer
lab, community library and run different life skills workshop such as
career choice, basic entrepreneurship skills (theories & practical), IT
training short courses in graphic and web design.
PEN Tanzania focuses in its 3 major projects that are being run by the organization, as explained below;

The Journey PEN Tanzania had a number of exciting activities; where by PEN Tanzania was able to win an
award from African Grant Makers Network Award (Philanthropy in Africa 2015), where we
were among the top 10 African best youth led organization in philanthropy project among
700 applicants, PEN Tanzania Director Mr. Sharnel Deo was selected to attend this exciting
workshop held in Arusha-Tanzania for the whole week.
In 2015, PEN Tanzania was also able to train computer basic skills through its mobile computer
lab project, a total number of 350 students in government primary schools. These children
were also taught on communication and presentation skills, as a way of empowering them
to communicate effectively when in class and with their peers in school. It was a great time
spending with these children, trying to help them and educate them on computer knowl-
edge, communication skills, but also sharing a few good ideas on different life’s issues,
whereby we learnt a lot of interesting things from them.

As it is always said, work hard pays!! Kijitonyama primary school Headmaster after seeing
our passion and dedication to our activities, he donated a building to PEN Tanzania, where
it is still under renovation and collecting different equipment’s for the grand opening of
the Youth Hub Center in the near future. Also in April 2015, PEN Tanzania got friends from
Zanzibar who wanted us to open our office branch and work with us in Zanzibar Island,
hence we followed all the procedures and we now have PEN Tanzania branch in Zanzibar
working with youths in entrepreneurial activities.
PEN Tanzania had another huge milestone in its activities, whereby we got a tender of
training women who belong in SACCOS and VICOBA groups. This training was sponsored
by Kitunda Counselor from Ilala District, where we had an opportunity to train 2000 women
on entrepreneurship knowledge (August-September). The training encompassed different
subjects such as record keeping in business, marketing and branding strategies among
others. For us it was a way of raising funds to enable the implementation of mobile computer
lab in different schools.
Moreover, in September 2015, PEN Tanzania gave birth to a new exciting program known
as SHE Inspire Tanzania. It is a program that aims at inspiring teenage girls/boys, and youths
from the age of 18-35 years. We focus in raising their awareness and capacity building activi-
ties in different areas such as self-awareness, communication and presentation skills, HIV/
AIDS awareness, Hygiene, Menstrual and Reproductive health. Our first clients were the
young women in Zanzibar who invited us to train them on self-confidence and awareness
together with leadership skills. Upon our come back, we were also invited by Apps and
Girls, to train their young tech women on the matters of sexuality, HIV/AIDS and Menstrual
health and Hygiene. Both of the workshops we did were very successful and exciting to us
and our clients.

Challenges We Faced in 2015Despite of the success stories we had in 2015, we also faced some challenges in
our way;
• Lackofenoughcomputerstotrainprimaryschoolchildrenonbasic
computer knowledge. Due to the increase in number of the children we train in
primary schools, we experienced shortage of computers/laptops which is a very
important tool in mobile computer lab project. This hindered our volunteers to
attend all the sessions allocated for computer lessons in identified schools.
• Electricityproblem;Intheschoolswhereweworkwith,theydonothave
a generator to support us when there is power cut off during computer lessons,
hence this contributed towards ineffective delivery of the program
• Lackofenoughcapital.Thisisamajorprobleminourorganization,since
a lot of activities that we do are funded from our own pockets, which sometimes
it is hard to implement everything that we have planned in our annual calendar
together with paying some allowance to our staffs and volunteers, who sacrifice
a lot of their time to make things happen in PEN Tanzania

In as much as PEN Tanzania tries to do its
activities through own funds, yet we still
need huge support from friends and well-
wishers, angel Investors, and donor support
to achieve our desired goals in 2016. As it
is said, Unity is power, PEN Tanzania needs
anybody who is a development activists to
join us in volunteering their time, money,
materials, equipment’s and other resources
that we can use to empower our children,
youths and women in various sectors so
that we can join hands in fighting against
illiteracy and poverty in the country.
