Honor guards of the Three Services of the Chinese People's Liberation Army drill during a training session in Beijing in July.
Washington (CNN) -- The Pentagon issued fresh warnings
Wednesday that China's military expansion could stir up newtensions and provoke dangerous misunderstandings
"The pace and scope of China's sustained military investment haveallowed China to pursue capabilities we believe are potentiallydestabilizing to regional military balances, increase the risk of
misunderstanding and miscalculation and may contribute to regionaltensions and anxieties," Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense forEast Asia Michael Schiffer said.
"Such capabilities could increase Beijing's options to use military
force to gain diplomatic advantage, advance its interests or resolvemilitary disputes in its favor."
The annual survey of defense and security issues involving China
has produced a litany of short-term and ongoing concerns in recentyears. Past reports have focused on increased overall spending onthe military; the enhanced range of ballistic and anti-ship missiles;
the military's lack of transparency and expanded power-projectioncapability; and increased spending on efforts to break into U.S.military computers.
A consistent theme in the reports has been the potential threat theCommunist nation's military growth poses to regional stability and to
Taiwan in particular.
A classified report was presented to Congress and an83-page version was made public.
U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, chairman of the
House Armed Services Committee, said Congress "willreview this assessment in greater detail" in the comingweeks but noted two things that stood out in the report:
China, U.S. to work together onNorth Korea
At least 33 dead in Peru buscrash
Coast Guard interviews rescuedrafters

no balance, the US does whatever they wish.
The irony is that without the West buying all the cheap crap from China they wouldn't
have money to buy food let alone military equipment. Cheap product and quick profit
turns into a military power....while the US is bankrupt and becoming a Third World
country33

If you were Vietnam, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, S. Korea.. would you like
to have China exerting its power over you?8

I wonder how the Iraqis are feeling after millions of their brothers and
sisters have been killed by American bombs and bullets, and their country bombed
back to the stone age. I wonder how the Laotians are feeling after Americans
bombed their country, dumped agent orange on their forests and farms, dropped
tens of thousands of landmines on their country. And the Laotians were not even
at war with the USA! Mmm, John1113, talking about Vietnam, USA killed millions of
Vietnamese and bombed and dumped tons and tons of agent orange into Vietnam!
And I wonder how many Arab countries would like AMerica to be their neighbour.
Americans should do a self examination of their fau lts before they criticise others.7

The Pentagon said nothing about matching strengths. It will take a half a
century or more to match the military output of the US. Centuries if we compare it
to NATO. The point was the destabilizing concern. No countries in the region trust
China, so when it renovates its aircraft carrier, everyone in the vicinity ups their
military in some form to counter it. That's escalation. That's destabilizing.2

You are an idiot! The Chinese has been invading countries and
killing/oppressing millions of civilians everywhere in Asia. The part of Mongolia, now
"affectionately" called "Inner Mongolia", part of Kashmir, Tibet, and Laos, just to
name a few. Chinese influence over Central Asian countries have turned these
countries into dumps, and they still continue to do so. I cannot imagine the stupidity
of you.

The Americans snuffed out millions of Iraqis and tens of thousands of
Afghans. They snuffed out milions and millions of Vietnamese. tens of thousands of
Laotians. The USA provided arms to Saddam to kill thousands of Iranians. The
USA supported Marcos to rape his own country and killed thousands of muslim
Filipinos. USA supported cruel dictators in Latin America, Africa, Middle East and in
Asia. USA even snuffed out almost all the native Americans.

What's the fuss? Is the USA the only country allowed to have a strong military?
Who gave USA that right? Not God, I am sure. China has a right to develop its military so
that it does not get pushed around. As for the track record, the USA has been the most
aggressive nation on earth, often attacking other nations. It is currently at war at four
different battle fronts. It has always been at war at any point of time since WW2. It
supports or has supported the most number of dictators, including the Shah, Mubarrak,
Saudi king, Bahrain king, Yemen and Tunisian regimes, a whole bunch of Latin American
dictators. It had supported military regimes in Taiwan (before it became a democracy)
and Thailand. It has supported Marcos regime. China's military is at least 2 generations
behind the USA and is definitely not a threat to US security. The Pentagon is doing a

hoohah because the generals want more budgets to buy more toys for the military, and
who knows who gets some financial gravy dropped by the wayside . The arms lobbyists
want some money, and the arms producers want contracts. That's the real reason.25

BCJJonah1111: From all data I have seen on the news, USA is the world's
biggest pollutant in absolute term and on per capita term is even worse. USA is
also the biggest carbon dioxide pollutant. As for human rights, USA has killed
millions of Iraqis, tens of thousands of Afghans. What human rights record is that?
Of course if we dig history back a few decades more, it is even worse.Discrimination and segregation of blacks, natives, US born Japanese etc. Even
now, there is discrimination against Latinos and Asians. If you travel around the
world a bit more then you will know that Americans are the most disliked. The UGLY
AMERICAN is still very alive. What cheap knockoffs? Obviously Americans like
China made goods , and that's why USA keep importing them.7
BCJonah1111 2 years agosw eetsharon
No problem but unfortunately China`s pathetic human
rights legislation and the fact that they kept polluting the planet with their cheap
knock offs pisses a lot of people off...4

BCJonah1111: Sorry I am not against China. And I am not against the USA
either actually. I just think that China has a right to progress and develop, and that
Americans should not treat them like enemies, otherwise it is becomes a self-
fulfilling prophecy. China is not perfcct in human rights but which country is? Also
they have come a long way over the past fifty years. It is a very complex country
with many diverse population and very difficult to govern. The important thing is
that the country is heading in the right direction.3

Why should the Pentagon's worries be taken seriously? In Libya, diplomacy
was of no use, military force was the only thing that the US was interested in using. If it's
OK for the US then it's OK for everyone else too, including China. US needs to practice
what it preaches or stop preaching.14

Even the Chinese have enough moral values left not to do this today! US has lost
any right to speak of moral values, never mind anything else.5

ShovelingSnw: believe what you want. Blame who you want. But wouldn't
believe any crap from anybody who tells me they know that the current
humanitarian disaster in Libya is less that if the Libyian gov't was allowed to take
out the rebels. What makes you think that you know this? You have a crystal
ball? Are you capable of seeing the future? If you can, you will also know that the
US mission in Libya is 50% propaganda to make sure you repeat what you are told.2
Shovel ingSnw 2 years agovirj
The bigger picture is how many would have died if no intervention had
occurred. In this case, the UN said it was a humanitarian disaster waiting to
happen. Something that doesn't happen with smart bombs.2

When NATO searches for targets, water supplies are needed for civilians
and army, so they destroy water supplies to kill the army (and civilians are only
collateral damage). The list goes on and on and on of civilian target that were also
destroyed. All those people they targeted and missed but got everyone else
nearby. I guess for you, all these are just collateral damages. The US has been
doing 9/11 to many others for a long time, just in a not so obvious way.2 Share
