ANIMAL PROTECTION WORK SIKANDER’S RESCUE TALE

November 4, 2016: Sikander is a 10 year old mule whose daily routine involves carrying a load of fruit racks beyond his capacity, all over the city. His owner, who is not only inconsiderate of his basic needs such as medical attention for his injured leg, also feels that it's okay to make 3 people sit on the cart as Sikander struggles to barely stand. He's neither given horseshoes nor enough water to drink as he struggles in the hot sun. We came across this poor animal and couldn't just look away from his plight. We freed the animal and filed a case against his owner. We would like to thank Sultan Bazaar police for their prompt action.

Sikander has been freed and is being given treatment for his injured leg. But we still have a long fight ahead to make the lives of countless Sikandars easier, throughout the nation. Kindly join us to put an end to cruelty inflicted upon draught animals.

Sikander’s miserable plight

Sikander, finally free!

#NoMoreKennels CAMPAIGN

November 9, 2016: An anonymous dog kennel in Hyderabad was abandoned by its owner. Six dogs had starved to death and were found in a heart wrenching condition, while four more were found emaciated. The locals observed a rotting stench and broke open the lock to witness this horrifying scene.

Breeding kennels have become rampant in the twin cities, and they have been violating every animal rights rule. The dogs are chained up all day in cramped, crude, filthy conditions, without providing basic necessities such as food or water. Dogs are bred twice a year and are usually killed or abandoned when they are no longer able to produce puppies. Mothers and their litters often suffer from malnutrition, exposure, and a lack of adequate veterinary care. Puppies are torn away from their mothers and sold to pet shops.

This incident, and many such others that do not come into the light show us why exactly we need stricter rules to be implemented regarding animals used for breeding. Please do not buy animals, and adopt a rescued animal instead. Say no to this barbaric business of breeding, let there be no more kennels!

COMMUNITY ANIMAL PROTECTOR ID CARDS

PFA Hyderabad’s COMMUNITY ANIMAL PROTECTOR (CAP) Identity Cards are for those who care for animals in their locality. We’re working on a mission to build Hyderabad’s animal welfare activist base by facilitating the formation of CAPs across the twin cities. CAPs would be the army of animal protectors who can take part in activities including but not limited to Animal Birth Control, rescues, cruelty prevention, adoption assistance and campaigns in their respective localities only. Individual CAPs would also work towards including more volunteers in the network.

UPDATES FROM THE RESCUE HOME WE MISS YOU LUCY

Lucy, an 8 year old German Shepherd, had faced severe neglect all her life. Never de-wormed or vaccinated. No baths or walks whatsoever, tick infestation beyond a shelter volunteer's worst nightmare.

Lucy at PFA rescue home

Lucy's owner abandoned her when she developed paralysis of hind legs due to tick fever, and we brought her over to PFA rescue home. She had a fighting spirit, and would try to walk, sit up and explore her surroundings. We were very moved and got a wheel cart fabricated for her. We helped her walk around, and gave her regular physiotherapy sessions.

QUARTERLY HIGHLIGHTS PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS HYDERABAD AND SECUNDERABAD We were glad to see her getting used to the cart and were hoping that she recovers soon. However, our happiness was short-lived as she succumbed to liver failure and breathed her last on 26 November, 2016. We miss her dearly, but are sure that she is in a happier place, free from pain and suffering.

PRIZED PATRONS

Vibha Jain

We would like to thank Vibha Jain Foundation for sponsoring the daily supply of Dr. Noor’s vegetarian dog food for PFA emergency rescue home. The dogs love the food and the bowls are licked clean within minutes!

Manjira Sen

Our prized patron Manjira Sen has figured out a way of creating t-shirts for dogs out of human tees, so as to avoid usage of e-collars, which make the animals uncomfortable. This is particularly useful for animals that are injured/undergoing amputation, and other surgeries.

AWARENESS SESSIONS

November 15, 2016: People for Animals Hyderabad was invited over to Gitanjali Devashray school on the occasion of 'Pet Day', to speak to the children regarding raising awareness on various aspects of animal welfare. Team PFA addressed the students regarding identifying and reporting cruelty towards animals, adoption of homeless animals, taking care of community animals, tree plantation, etc. The children listened with enthusiasm and gave a great response.

November 10, 2016: We were invited to conduct an awareness session for the kids at Gitanjali Devashray school, to inculcate compassion in them at a young age. It was an interactive session, and the super enthusiastic kids showered us with love! We were happy to receive such a positive response and had an amazing time with them!

NEWS FROM THE ANIMAL WELFARE WORLD No more cockfights in Andhra, Telangana, says High Court

December 26, 2016: The High Court at Hyderabad on Monday upheld the ban on cockfighting and directed the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments to ensure no cockfights take place during the Sankranti festival.

The court extended the ban on cockfights wholly and not just during the Sankranti festival in January.

Central Zoo Authority derecognises 21 circuses and implements a ban on exhibition and housing of wild animals!

December 7, 2016: In a monumental decision for animals in circuses, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has passed orders cancelling its recognition to 21 circuses. This means that circuses across the country (except Ajanta circus, whose animals are under scrutiny) can no longer house wild animals like elephants. The CZA has passed these orders following official inspections in which extreme cruelty to animals was reported.

QUARTERLY HIGHLIGHTS PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS HYDERABAD AND SECUNDERABAD SC Orders Kerala Groups To Stop Killing Stray Dogs, Govt Can Kill According To Guidelines

November 17, 2016: The Supreme Court has asked Kerala's vigilante groups to stop killing stray dogs. The court came down heavily on these groups, and asked why they were taking the law into their own hands.

SANKRANTI AND MANJA As Sankranti is approaching, there is an important issue that needs your attention. As you know, manja used for flying kites is often gummed and coated with powdered and finely crushed glass, metal or other sharp materials. This manja is deadly for thousands of pigeons, crows, owls, endangered vultures and other birds who are wounded or killed when they become entangled in the strings. The bigger the bird, the more are the chances of getting a severe injury. Many a time, the entire wing ends up coming off and then the bird is never able to fly again. Not only on these special days, the lives of birds are at risk because of the dreaded manja that, getting entangled in the trees, sticks there for months and injures birds which build their nests in them.

Manja has also injured and killed many people, including children. It also damages transmission lines and causes power failures. Despite the ban on this dangerous product, the markets are seen flooded with it.

So let's all take an oath to not harm the lives of other creatures in the name of sport and opt for the relatively less harmful regular thread for flying kites during Sankranti.

MAKE A DONATION People for Animals as an organization is mainly into implementing the animal protection laws of India. India is one of the countries in the world where animal right laws are among the strongest. In spite of that, due to huge human population, conflict between human and animal is very high and poses a great challenge to the working of PFA. The costs to sustain and maintain the rescue home, as well as to fight for animal rights, are high and we depend entirely on donations to rescue, feed and provide necessary veterinary care for the animals. Any donation, big or small is welcome and we really appreciate your help.
