Physical and Chemical Properties and Changes
Physical Properties Any characteristic of a material that can be
observed or measured with out changing the composition of that substance.
Physical Change Changes that occur when some of the
properties of a material change, but the substances in the material remain the same.
Separating Mixtures using Physical Properties.
Direct Separation Separation based on large physical
properties like size, shape, color, magnetism, and density.
Filtration
A process that separates mixtures based on the size of the PARTICLES.
Evaporation The process that separates mixtures
based on their boiling point.
Distillation
The process that separates substances in a mixture (solution) using their BOILING POINTS and allows you to collect BOTH substances.
Chromatography
A process used to separate PIGMENTS.
Chemical Properties The way a substance reacts with other
substances to form new substances with different properties.
Reactivity
The property that describes how easily a substance combines chemically with other substances.
Flammability
The ability of a material to burn in the presence of oxygen.
Chemical Changes A change that occurs when a substance
reacts and forms one or more new substances.
Common signs of a chemical change
1. Change in color
2. Production of a gas
3. Formation of a precipitate
