Take a look at them!!

This is the correct name for the actualbuilding of Banamex. Do you knowwhere it is? It is located at the cornerof 5 de Febrero and Francisco I.Maderostreets. It was built in the 18 century .This building shows us the prosperityof the State on that time. It has twostyles: and thesetwo names could sound a littleweird for you , but both are very common in our city. As an extrainformation, it is the most beautiful colonial building in the northernterritory inMexico. Interesting, don't you think so?

It is located in Constitución street, between 5 de febrero and 20 deNoviembre. Next to a very expensive store,It was built in 1596 under the name ofSan Ignacio de la Compañía de JesúsCollege “amen” . This is actually thebuilding of themain offices of the UJED, it

was constructed in the second half of the 18 Century. The front of thebuilding has a style, and here has more s that in theinteriors.

Don't miss the opportunity to watch more carefully this nice building.

....FOR THE PERFECT STUDENT 10

Page 12: Pimp My Mind!

It was almost four o'clock in the morning and Icould not sleep because I was remembering all Ihad gone through to reach my goal: “to learn

English as my second language”.

There are a lot of memories since I started as abeginner in the U.S.A. Marine, such as standinghours in the rain, waking up early, doing heavy

exercises, and receiving severe punishments when Idid not understand what the sergeant said.

At first, when I got into the military, sometimesmy head could not get the sergeant's phrases thatmy ears heard; they sounded like nonsense ordersto me. One time the sergeant said, “I'll bet you'rethe kind of guy that would kick a person in the assand not even have the god dam common courtesyto give him a reach-around. I'll be watching…” I

had to ask what a reach-around was because I didnot know what it meant.

At the beginning, I did nothing but imitateothers. Every morning I got up in a single bouncefrom my bunk bed and in less than ten seconds Iwas in line wearing my Marine uniform ready toreceive orders and obey them. I knew my missionjoining the Marine would be difficult especiallybecause I did not understand the language

(English) very well.

I was seventeen years old when I was facing themost difficult mission for me: to learn English in a

context in which my mother tongue neverappeared. The exercises were hard. At night mybody felt faint. The sergeant's incoherent phrases

echoed in my ears hundreds of times by thesquadron. Luckily, the sergeant never entirely

knew that Ipronounced them bymuttering in my teeth trying tobe the most understandable andas coherent as possible.

Fortunately, I found an American, Williams, now mybest friend. He spoke a little Spanish and he felt sympathyfor me. He helped me a lot; he lent me some audio tapes

in English and he said, “You can do it! Just listen to thetapes and repeat them in your mind until you get tired”.He continued telling me, “In these tapes you will find all

the common phrases from the military, listen to them andrepeat them over and over. Try to practice and imitate

the pronunciation”.

Also, we spent our free time having conversations inEnglish; we talked about our family, our goals, and

commands that I did not understand, and the best thing isthat he never explained grammar rules to me, but he

corrected my pronunciation.

In addition, I spent hours on Marine drills as Marine callingcadences. These Marine marching cadences are traditional

call and response work songs while I was running ormarching. I memorized these marching songs (jodies). Atfirst I did not know what these jodies meant but the more I

sang them, the easier it was for me to say them andunderstand them. One of the jodies I sang was:

“Here we go againSame old stuff againMarching down the avenueFew more days and we'll be throughI won't have to look at youSo, I'll be glad and so will you”.

Believe it or not, I will carry those memories to mydeath because those tasks have built my way to succeed as

in my professional and personal life. By spending timewith native speakers, I was exposed to the new language(English) and I learnt it at my own pace. Without even

noticing, I had already reached my goal. Now I know I cando anything I want if I have the desire, that's why if I can

do it, you can do it too!
