Playgroup WA celebrated 40 years of Playgroup in Western Australia during the week 24 - 28th September. All playgroups across the state were encouraged to join the celebrations by hosting a party. Being the last week of term and with the promise of gorgeous spring weather, Lake Grace Playgroup decided that a Teddy Bears Picnic would be the perfect way to celebrate. So on Thursday 27th September a large group of children came down to the woods (well, the playgroup yard) and gave their teddies a lovely

morning of fun and games. It was however, a rather blustery day (as Winnie the Pooh would say). The sunshine lasted long enough for a march through the yard to "The Teddy Bears Picnic" song and some parachute play. First the teddies got thrown into the air (they LOVED it), and then all the kids crouched under the parachute and the parents recited "Round and Round the Garden" ending with "Jump Up in the Air". Each time there was a chorus of "Again!" It was way too blustery for an outdoor picnic, but

Tania and Jared Bray of Walkers Hill Vineyard were delighted with the response to their Open Day with wine tasting that was held on Sunday 7th October. Held from 10am to 4pm the day was to introduce their 2012 Rosé and Chardonnay. Cake and coffee, along with cheese and biscuits were available to accompany the tastings. The vineyard has been closed over the last 12 months but behind the scenes the Bray family has been working hard at getting everything in order in time for the launch of their first vintage. Just over 10km north of Lake Grace; the wine cellar has a beautiful view across the vines with the family dog Chardy on hand to welcome visitors. Jared and Tania plan to build a patio area to the east of the cellar, which will provide more seating area for when they hold functions. Picturesque on the outside, the cellar door provides a welcome and ambient atmosphere the moment you step through the door with a display of local woodworking and food products. Although the Chardonnay and the Rosé were the debutantes of the day, Walkers Hill Vineyard also has other wine for sale from previous vintages under previous owners. Having well over 20 come through the door on Sunday

has given Tania confidence that they are travelling in the right direction on their business journey but has also given them plenty more ideas as they build their plans for the future. With lots of ideas brewing north of town there will be plenty more opportunities for both locals and tourists to take advantage of stopping in at the vineyard to see what is on offer.

News From the Lake Grace Community Men’s Shed It is with great pleasure that the Lake Grace Community Men’s Shed Committee announce that we now have a Shed to operate from—be it temporary, until our Shed is built. We thank John Boyland, the Head Master of Lake Grace DHS for making this Shed available, along with the use of the Manual Arts room—which has just been upgraded with state of the art new machinery. This includes both metal and woodworking facilities. We will have a facilitator on hand to show us how to safely use machinery and help us with projects. But… first we have a bit to do to our Shed, which adjoins the Manual Arts room. Our intention is to clean it up and make a social room with all the conveniences—to allow our members to have a coffee, or just to meet and have a chat. We would like to put in a personal access door, so members have access to the social room of the Shed at any time. So, we invite anyone who has a few spare hours on Sunday, 21st October to come along from 9:00am, have a look at our Shed, and help with the Shed clean up. Feel free to just come and have a look if that is all you wish to do. To get to the Shed, drive in behind the school, entering off Betham Street.

WA Men’s Shed Conference On the 3rd and 4th October, the WA Men’s Shed

Association held its two day state conference at the new Mosman Park Community Shed, in conjunction with the Fremantle Shed. Approximately 130 people attended, along with five members of our Committee. It was a very informative couple of days and covered many topics including: a funding workshop, insurance issues, men’s health and the operation of different Shed’s.

Battery Drive The Committee would like to thank everyone who has donated their old batteries. We have approximately 20 tonnes on hand, and we know there are many more still out there. This will be an ongoing fundraiser for the Men’s Shed and we apologise to all those people who we haven’t been able to get to yet—but we will get there soon. For ten years Curtin University students have been travelling from Perth to Lake Grace as part of the annual Curtin volunteering weekend to perform good deeds out in the wider community. Held over the long weekend seventeen international students participated. Representing Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Iran, China, Japan, China and Singapore; all of the students were excellent ambassadors for the youth of today. The annual visit to Lake Grace by this year’s volunteers got underway on Friday evening 21st September 2012. The group usually doesn’t get to Lake Grace until Saturday morning but this year left the city about 2.30pm Friday and the bus arrived at Lake Grace just on 7pm. Before they arrived the spirit of the local community was already evident with CBH making their accommodation in Griffiths St available again for the weekend. The Saltbush Inn supplied two of their units to handle the extra students that were participating this year, while the Lake Grace Roadhouse supplied tea for those who needed a bite to eat on arrival. The Lions Club ladies were on the job Saturday morning to organise a continental breakfast at the sports pavilion hall at 8.30am. More community help then came from Spencers Shearing in the form of an invitation to Strevett’s farm to watch some shearing. Thanks to Darren and team as this entertained the group and gave the weather a chance to settle down before our main project got underway. The bus and passengers then headed back to the pavilion for morning tea at 10am. Another Lake Grace

treat awaited the students here in the form of Lion, Henk Doelman’s home baked shortbread biscuits and sponge cake. The major project for the weekend was to renew the street numbers in town to assist the ambulance service in locating the correct residence. The volunteers were divided into groups of three and under the guidance of Lion members were put to work cleaning the kerb and

painting the yellow background and green numbers all around town. The team paused for a light lunch, again at the pavilion via the wonderful Lion ladies, then back to the job in hand until afternoon tea and another Doelman treat. The workers then retired to the accommodation for a rest and clean-up before an evening meal at the Lake Grace Hotel. This function is always a great opportunity for the Lions and helpers to learn from and socialise with their guests. Sunday morning consisted of a tour for the group of the Lake Grace silos and grain handling facilities conducted by Martin Carruthers. This was a great hit for those who got to see the view of the town from the top of the loading elevator. Thanks again to Marty and CBH. More of those shortbreads and sponges for morning tea then followed by one last attack on the street numbering before lunch. The sausages and rolls kindly donated by Lake Grace Roadhouse for lunch finished off a great weekend that allowed Lake Grace to display the country hospitality it has become famous for. During the weekend the local community had a glimpse of the Curtin students dedication to learning and how they were striving to improve their education. Lions W2 Zone Chairman for this area Greg Rutherford flew from his property north of Narembeen to farewell

the volunteers as they headed home. Well done to all who participated in a very successful weekend.

The Driver Reviver van was parked up at ‘The Shed’ in Stubbs Street for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend. As this was the beginning of the school holidays the Roadwise committee were quite sure that traffic on Friday and Saturday would be non-stop. However the travellers had other ideas, apparently driving on roads other than the ones passing through Lake Grace. Although traffic was light 46 travellers still made the choice to stop, stretch their legs and have a hot beverage courtesy of Roadwise and the volunteers who were on hand to make their stop more welcome. Numbers were lower than had been recorded over other weekends; however the van was only open for just over 10 hours. The van is staffed by volunteers from the Fire Brigade, St John Ambulance, Lions and the Lake Grace CRC. As Christmas approaches the Roadwise committee will be setting up a schedule for the van over the festive season. If you would be happy to spend two hours in the van serving up tea/coffee and a bit of Christmas cheer

A vast expansive blue sky, the warmth of sunshine on your back and the bleating of baby lambs trotting along next to their mothers - we were participating in moving a flock of just over 900 sheep through the paddocks with Mr Ron Lay. This was our first Community Service Programme event. Mr Lay taught us about the merino wool industry.

Then Mrs Bishop introduced us to the first step in the manufacturing process-spinning wool.

Mrs Kerrie Argent also introduced us to the felting process.

Our young Aussie soldiers in Afghanistan have said it’s freezing at night in the desert (-25 degrees C) and a bit of warm bedding at their camp base would be appreciated. Mrs Alison Dines has been teaching us skills so that we are able to help produce a quilt that will be posted to one of our Aussie soldiers. Our thanks to our community members who have voluntarily given their time to help us learn these new skills.

Unfortunately due to a harsh couple of days as an introduction to October, harvest is drawing near a bit quicker than we had hoped. Good to see some people are taking advantage of the time still available bringing in alternators for a preseason service. Regardless of the quality of the crop the alternators will still do roughly the same amount of hours in some pretty testing conditions. Another product worth considering this harvest is camera systems. In previous years we have fitted them into trucks and trailers to reduce the risk of falling while climbing up to check on filling grain and to speed up the loading process. They also save some wear and tear on dodgy knees and backs and can be set up to help backing up trailers. The kits we sell have a quad screen (can take up to four cameras) in colour and are multi volt (12 or 24v). They come with 2 cameras and 2 x 10 metre camera leads. Have you heard about the 50km early morning horse ride that is going to happen on Saturday 27th October? Pauline Taylor and Colleen Hopkins have generously decided they will do a 50km sponsored horse ride to help raise money for Ian Westbrook’s project in Cambodia. This project rescues children that are sold into prostitution /sex trade, many times by their parents. Pauline and Colleen are hoping to get lots of sponsorship from the local community members. So if you see a sponsorship form please be generous and donate to this worthy cause. They are also inviting any other horse riders from near and far to get involved in this event, get some sponsorship and join them for the ride. Should be fun they tell me….. At the 25km turning point of the ride the rest of the hospital staff will be organizing and selling bacon and egg burgers for breakfast at the shed (undercover area in the middle of town opposite the CBH offices). This is also another way to donate money and get something for it. But it should be fun to come down to the shed and have brekkie cooked for you, see the horses, chat to the riders. Talk to Ian Westbrook about his project and what is happening in Cambodia, meet friends for breakfast, do something different etc etc. So 9am on Saturday morning on the 27

join us for breakfast. Bring some loose change in your pockets as we hope to organise a few games for the kids, big and small, and all the money will go to a worthy cause. What I like about this project is that Ian works at the hospital as an RN and funds his own expenses and all our money will go into this project, so 100% hits the ground, and is utilised in this project. Our money goes a long way over there, $350 will put a bore down and the whole community can have fresh water all the time instead of getting it out of dirty rivers and large puddles that has anything lying around in it. $500 will by a school enough paper and pencils for all the students in a school for a year. Something which most parents can’t afford to buy.

Think how lucky we are and how a little bit from us will go a long way over there for them. If you don’t want to sponsor the horse ride or come for breakfast you can simply donate some money up at the Lake Grace Hospital that will go into our donation tin for this Cambodian project. Please be generous. Admittedly I have never been keen to donate money overseas as many need help and support here. But the thought of parents having to sell their children into the sex trade to support the rest of their family is horrible and I would hate to be put in that position. So the fact that this project is aimed at rescuing some of these kids and giving them a safe home and community to live in is a pretty worthwhile project to me, and the fact that all the money will go to the project and not be eaten up by administration makes it an even more worth while project. Ian is hoping to raise $10,000 for the land and money to build the homes etc. It would be nice to be able to give him the $10,000 for the land from this ride but what ever we raise will be more than he has now, and he would be very pleased. So come along and join us on Saturday morning 27

Member for Wagin, Terry Waldron MLA has welcomed grants from the Waste Authority to improve waste management in the regions. Two Great Southern based projects aimed at recycling camera equipment, bicycles and food waste will share more than $27,000 under the State Government’s Community Grants Scheme. The Lake Grace Development Association will receive $10,940 to purchase a cardboard baler for the Lake Grace Recycling Centre to package and dispatch the cardboard for sale in Perth as part of their fundraising efforts. The Green Skills group of Albany will receive $16,400 to run a series of presentations and workshops in their local area to encourage reduction of waste to landfill, focusing on food waste. Mr Waldron said a total of almost $90,000 had been allocated in the latest round of the scheme which supported small-scale community projects on waste management. “In total, eight community organisations will receive grants ranging between $5,700 and $19,400 to help

them improve local communities’ responses to waste,” he said. “The grant recipients have demonstrated an innovative and creative approach to the management of waste. It is essential that we increase the amount of material being recycled and reused, and improve the way we manage waste. “It is also pleasing to see some of the funds raised from the landfill levy going to small community projects that have such worthy environmental outcomes.” The grants are allocated by the Waste Authority and administered by Department of Environment and Conservation.

Business in profile – Greenline machinery Greenline Ag started in 2008 with Mike Hutton and Blue Charlesworth as the ownership team and Hal Walton as an investor partner to assist in the acquisition of the seven John Deere dealerships in the Great Southern. With John Deere consolidating their sales outlets, this was the area Greenline had to commit to purchasing in order to obtain the John Deere's agreement.

With John Deere’s agreement and 51 staff from those dealerships Greenline set out to become the machinery supplier of first choice in the Great Southern with the John Deere range of tractors, harvesters, hay, seeding, spraying, and tillage equipment, plus the AG Management Solutions [AMS] products all recognised as the best in the world. Greenline also represent a dozen other small and major manufacturers such as Bourgault, Trufab, Kuhne and Manitou. Greenline now have 84 excellent employees and a growing customer list.

This opportunity was put forward by John Deere as they wished to rationalise and join the Perth dealership and six other dealerships into one owner group.

In 2010 when the Perth dealership became available Greenline invited Stuart Smart of Mingenew to join as an investor and in so doing provide the capital required to purchase the Perth dealership.

Greenline Ag has dealerships in Lake Grace, Wagin, Boyup Brook, Witchcliffe, Narrogin, Pingelly and Perth. Lake Grace is the premium dealership having the largest area of responsibility and the most large hectare farmers within the group.

Since the acquisition Greenline have been endeavouring to lift their stock of parts, improve the service team and generally get the dealership working to the advantage of customers and therefore Greenlines own success. Today they have a sales team of three, seven in the service team, two in their parts team and one and a half in administration.

From the 1st October Mike Saunders took over as

manager. Mike will be assisted by ‘Service Manager’ Dale Cross and ‘Senior Parts Interpreter’ Matt Hitchcock- Jose along with the sales team of Jim Hallam and Athol Kennedy.

Unfortunately Mother Nature with her drought, frost, and low prices has put many hurdles in front of the company’s ambitions and slowed them down somewhat. But, given that Mother Nature provides average or better seasons the aim in the next 5 years is to build the dealership to reflect the business opportunity which will include more people, new premises and service second to none in all departments.

Hal Walton – Company Shareholder and board chairman. Hal left Perth in 1967 to take on the Chamberlain dealership in Carnamah and after 37 years grew the business of T & H Walton Stores to four branches with 102 staff and selling around 500 pieces of equipment each year.

After investing with Mike Hutton and Blue Charlesworth in 2008, Hal came to Lake Grace in 2011 to help with stabilising the business after the frost year and drought. Hal has enjoyed immensely meeting the people of the district and would like to wish newly appointed Lake Grace manager, Mike Saunders all the success.

Mike Saunders - Branch Manager. Originally from a farming back ground in Zimbabwe, Mike has a degree in BSc Ag Management from the University of Natal, South Africa. Mike immigrated to Australia in 2006 and took employment at Farmworks Lake Grace. Following this Mike ran the Pingaring AgSolutions store for 18 months. In 2010 Mike became the Lake Grace Area Manager for Summit Fertilizers. He relocated to Albany in 2011 to cover the surrounding Albany shire areas and the Albany Works Managers position. Mike looks forward on taking the role and dealing with the local community once again.

Athol Kennedy – Sales Rep & account manager; Hailing from north Lake Grace. When the farm was sold in the early nineties the desire to remain in agriculture was too great Athol spent the next 12 years in rural merchandise for Lake Grace Rural prior to managing Farmworks Lake Grace. Looking to specialise in agriculture he took an area managers role with Summit Fertilizer for the Lake Grace and surrounding areas. When an opportunity arose outside of the industry Athol spent 3 years commuting to and from Perth, resigning in July. When this position became available with Greenline Athol saw an opportunity to return to agriculture, his family and the local community full time, selling a quality product for a stable, long term dealership.

Jim Hallam – Sales Rep & account manager; Jim is a city boy a long way from his first job as a teller’s clerk with the ES&A bank in St Georges Terrace. Jim worked for Farm Power for 16 years in Quairading and Kulin. When the company failed in the 2010 drought he took a position with a road maintenance company in Corrigin

Dale Cross – Service manager. From a small farm near Naracoorte in South Australia. Dale has been working for John Deere on agricultural and forestry machinery for the last 13 years. He has been in Lake Grace for three years and enjoys polocrosse and fishing.

Sam Metcalf - forth year Apprentice Mechanic with two months left. From a farming back ground in Lake King. Sam was educated at Wesley College in Perth. After leaving school he did a few random jobs in the area before taking on an apprenticeship at Greenline.

Colm Welsh – Trades Assistant. Originally from farming background in Ireland. Colm has been in Australia for 10 months, five months of that spent in Lake King seeding. Colm has only recently taken up employment with Greenline, Lake Grace.

Simon O’Donnell – Mechanic. From Limerick in Ireland, where he was a John Deere mechanic. Simon has also worked for contractors in Ireland for five years driving tractors and forage harvesters.

Colm O’Connor – Mechanic. Colm comes from a farming background, he worked in a private garage in Limerick, Ireland mainly on Ford tractors. Colm has previously worked for harvesting contractors in Ireland and England.

Following on from TR Homes’ “Perfect Match” advertising campaign it formed around the ‘Farmers Wants a Wife’ television show, it is wanting everyone to ‘feel the love’ through its newly established Community Network Program and has begun installing product stands in various outlets throughout rural Western Australia. The program has the potential to be a win-win situation with new home buyers having a local point of contact whilst allowing TR Homes to take a more localised approach and to provide an improved level of customer service. TR Homes has recently installed a product stand at the Lake Grace Community Resource Centre, as part of a 12 month partnership. As part of the deal, the company has donated $500 toward a community organisation, in this case, the CRC nominated Living Communities. This has provided a much needed boost to Living Communities as they have no income stream. With Late Night Shopping approaching the donation was both timely and appreciated. The housing packages on the stand include the plans of nine homes currently available – a great starting point for choosing your new home. Lake Grace CRC will be able to network potential home buyers to a TR sales

consultant, giving buyers the opportunity to have a no-obligation chat and hopefully making the home buying journey easier for all involved. Understanding that continuing to build rural communities is important to everyone who lives there, for each home that TR Homes sells via the Lake Grace CRC another $1500 will be injected into local organisations, clubs & associations. CBH’s new smartphone tool, CBH Mobile has been released in time for harvest and is available for growers to access.

Grower Services General Manager, Karlie Mucjanko said CBH Mobile will provide growers who have smartphones access to load information as it is delivered to the bin, receival site segregations, live CBH Grain prices and key CBH contact details, all while they are on the run during harvest.

“This is another way we can provide value back to growers, especially during the harvest period when they are extremely busy and decisions need to be made on the go,” she said.

“Growers have provided feedback to CBH that they are keen to access live information that is available on LoadNet without having to wait to get home and use a computer.

“CBH Mobile will equip growers with real time load

quality information and site segregations allowing them to make amendments to harvest programmes on the run rather than waiting to get information back from their contractor or from someone at home near the computer.

“Growers are becoming increasingly tech savvy and CBH is working to keep pace with the new technologies they are embracing and integrating with their business in a way that brings them value and effective use of their time.

“CBH Mobile has been targeted to provide growers with the information they specifically need during their work day and not attempt to serve up every possible bit of information into one tool. The aim is to provide growers with a simple, straightforward and easy to use smartphone tool.”

Ms Mucjanko said at this stage CBH Mobile is not available for tablet devices and will not provide transactional capability but CBH will look to provide this capability in future phases of our mobile offering, if the demand is there.

Late last week Jim and I had the pleasure of the company of former Kukerin resident Kim Gray and his partner Meredith for a night. They were on the last leg of a fortnight tour of the WA’s Goldfields in a camper and in desperate need of a shower. By that I don’t mean they were deoderantly challenged more that they were covered in a layer of fine red dust. Many of you know Kim and his family so my story this edition is in two parts. Part one how they came to live in Kukerin and part two Kim and Meredith’s goldfield trek. Kim currently works at Whiteman Park, a 4000-hectare bush land area located 22 km north of Perth in the Swan Valley. Whiteman Park is known for its biodiversity, including over

450 endemic plants and more than 120 vertebrate animals

(some of which are rare and endangered). Over 17% of

Western Australian bird species occur in Whiteman Park,

including migratory birds attracted to the habitat provided by

Bennett Brook and associated wetlands including Grogan's

Swamp, a Conservation Category Wetland.

Transport heritage

Transport heritage is strong at Whiteman Park. Nowhere else

in Australia is there an opportunity to experience such a wide

range of transport heritage in one place.

There are now five independent community groups based at

Whiteman Park; each hold significant transport heritage

collections and provide rides and displays for visitors.

These groups are the Motor Museum of WA, Tractor

Museum of WA, Bus Preservation Society of WA, Western

Australian Light Railway Preservation Association (operating

Bennett Brook Railway) and the Perth Electric Tramway

Society.

Part one - Grandad Arthur Earnest Gray spent his early years at Bulong, 34 km east of Kalgoorlie. His father Arthur Francis Gray had a gold mine and used to service stamp mills in the area. his mother was Rosetta Gray, Postmistress in Boorara (east of Coolgardie and close to Bulong). Education wasn't as valued then as it is now. After a brief schooling young Arthur worked down the mine. On the 21st of November 1919 his father died from dust on the lungs in Kalgoorlie hospital. Arthur was just 15. In 1920, following his father’s death Arthur answered an advert from a farmer at Kukerin who needed a farm hand. When he got off the train at the Kukerin Station there was no one to meet him, all he had was the shirt on his back. He had no money and no choice but to wait. So he sat at the railway station and waited. He waited for 24 hours before Mick Pike noticed him, went across and asked how long he had been there and who he was

waiting for. Arthur told him he was waiting for Tom Spurr. By this stage Arthur was pretty hungry so Mick went across the road to the butchers and bought him a couple pound of sausages. Arthur cooked them up there and then in the railway yard. Mick told him that if he was still there when he had done his shopping that he would drop him off at Tom Spurr’s place as it was on his way home. Tom Spurr’s place was called ‘Mineral Hill’ which is now owned by the Gooding’s, prior to that it was owned by Max Bairstow. Anyway Mick dropped young Arthur off and told him to walk up the drive to Toms place. When he got there Tom says “Yeah, I was going to come in and pick you up but I was too busy”. Tom lived in a homemade tent, two mallet poles with a mallee stick frame formed the structure. Super bags roughly sewn together and thrown over the poles were all that kept you from the elements. The beds were two mallet poles with super bags threaded on them and spread apart these sat up off the ground on forked sticks. The blankets were more super bags sewn together. Tom had all these roo dogs and they camped in the tent too. They had kangaroo for dinner that first night, then it was time for bed. Before he went to bed Tom got a tin of kerosene and an old cloth and proceeded to wipe kero all over himself. Arthur didn’t realise at the time what Tom was doing. An hour later all became clear as he was awakened by a swarm of fleas and other blood sucking insects having a free meal on him! So he stuck it out for a week before walking into Kukerin. Lucky for Arthur it just happened to be a Sunday and everyone was gathered at the Church. It was here that he met Stan and Julia Meredith, they lived at South Kukerin. Jimmy and Jan Taylor owned that place before it was bought in part by Ross and John Ditchburn and

Barry and Kim Gray. The Meredith’s told him they couldn’t afford to pay him but they could give him a good bed and proper food. Of course he jumped at the chance. After a couple of years he did some work for Charlie Plunkett who lived up on ‘Red Hill’. Charlie was a tough, argumentative man who used to be a timber cutter at Pemberton. He took up the farm in 1911-12 and would cut sleepers to get some money. He came up to the Kukerin farm with a bloke called Bill Harris. Bill later came out to Lake Grace and took up land where Andrew Walker farms now. While working for Charlie Plunkett, Arthur met his future bride in Charlie’s daughter, Mary Plunkett. Arthur ‘popped the question’ and married Mary in 1923. They had one son, Charles (Kim’s father), born in 1924. Charlie Plunkett didn’t get along with his sons so they all left. After they married, Charlie said to Arthur “If I can live here till I die you can take on the farm”, so that’s what happened. Mind you Charlie hung on and hung on till he was 93!!! Part 2 Kim and Meredith’s Goldfields trek Kim and Meredith began their holiday at Mount Gibson, between Wubin and Payne’s Find they were Mallee Fowl nest monitoring for four days. From there we came back down through Mukinbudin and Southern Cross to Coolgardie where we met up with friends Chris and Jenny Brandenburg. We camped the first night at Lake Douglas and were going to stay another but some Motor Cross people turned up and said “You can’t camp there, you’re on the burn out pad” the decision to ‘move on’ was an easy one.

We drove up to Ora Banda via Kalgoorlie. While at Kalgoorlie, given our connection to Bulong, we took the opportunity to duck out to Bulong and have a look around. The Bulong cemetery has 94 people buried there 46 of them under 10 years old. They died mainly from disease, water was short and hygiene was poor. The Bulong town site was gazetted in 1895 and by 1900 had

a population of 620 plus many thousands of prospectors and

miners in the surrounding district. The centre become the

principal township of the North East Coolgardie Goldfields

and was the centre for the transaction of Government

business with a wardens court, police court etc. There were

six hotels and three stores, mechanics institute, town hall, the

government hospital and various churches.

The mine was active from about 1893 to 1908 with various

deep leads and alluvial workings, which by 1900 had

produced 17,500 ounces of gold.

The trip took us through Menzies, Niagara Dam and Kookynie. As the sign says ‘The ghost town that’s still alive’. The town of Leonora was really well groomed, so

tidy and well-manicured. Even the vacant shops were painted up. Good facilities and services. Gwalia was the next stop, Herbert Hoover’s house was worth seeing. When that was built the average flash house cost 100 pounds. Hoovers house cost 600 pounds to build. It’s restored and operates as a bed and breakfast at the mine site. The sons of Gwalia mine is now a big open cut and the house and museum are perched on the edge. Some of old buildings are still used like the assay office, where they valued the gold, this now operates as a photographic studio with old photos. Where they poured the gold is used as a tourist information office. The state hotel is quite a site.

From there we went down to Lake Ballard, walked up Snake Hill to get a view of the 51 statues which are spread over 7 square km. At Coolgardie we restocked with water, fuel and food. From there to Cave Hill via Burra Rocks, there’s a dam there the timber and sandalwood cutters used. Timber was cut there to supply fuel for the boilers. Cave Hill also has a dam, great for travellers and wildlife. The weathering on the rock was really impressive. We worked our way back down the Holland track to Hyden. It was pretty slow going but worth it.

Another day, another week and we have less than 80 days till Christmas. So we need to get in and make our Christmas baubles. Yes we still are looking for unused, un-needed, unloved, under utilised wire hanging baskets any size. Can be slightly out of shape, rusty, chains missing etc (actually sounds like me). We accept all, and it saves you storing them in the back shed or chucking them out the tip. ALL DONATIONS GREATFULLY RECEIVED. Remember it doesn’t matter if you don’t think your work is good enough, let us be the judge of that as we want a big variety of styles, woods and works as we plan to open the full Artspace for this exhibition, not just in the small window space. Next meeting 16th October 1pm in art space. At 10am 16th October we will meet at Tarin Rock wheat bin some can get out in the bush and photograph or draw any wild flowers that are left. Everyone is invited to join us for this. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants, bring morning tea, water bottle hat, sunscreen etc. See you there. New and old members very welcome.

“The seed collection project was completed by a seven strong team with staff from Katanning, Harvey and Narrogin involved. The continued benefit of drawing on resources from other regions (Harvey) within DEC through the Remote Regions Framework has proved very successful.

The collection of seed is fundamental to the revegetation strategy within the Lake Bryde catchment. In excess of 50 species (predominantly Hakeas, Melaleucas and Eucalypts) have been collected from within nature reserves in the Lake Bryde Recovery Catchment. The seed, once processed, will be passed to local nurseries for propagation. The seed collected this year will be primarily used to revegetate a 68ha block of land between Lake Bryde and Lakelands Nature Reserve with diverse locally sourced seed. This planting is part of the continued revegetation of a 750ha block of land creating a continuous biodiverse link between the two nature reserves. A total of approximately 125,000 seedlings will be planted in this area and on private property in 2013.

The rest of the seed will be used to fulfill a number of costshare revegetation projects between DEC and private landholders within the recovery catchment. The costshare revegetation projects look to return creek lines and paddock boundaries to a naturally occurring vegetative state, whilst also increasing the amount of native bushland within the recovery catchment.”

FEES AND CHARGES

The Shire of Lake Grace gives notice in accordance with Section 6.20 of the Local Government Act that a loan for $120,00 will

be taken out to fund additional headworks required for the connection of water to the new Lake Grace residential subdivision. The funds will be borrowed for a period of up to two years, with the principal being reimbursed to the Shire by the Water Corporation at the handover of the headworks to the Water Corporation. A resolution for this was passed at the ordinary Council meeting held Friday 28th September 2012

The water supplies and Waste Water (sewerage) Services have been topical in recent months and the following matters will directly effect this community. Draft Report: Inquiry into the

Efficient costs and Tariffs of the Water Corporation, Aqwest and the Busselton Water Board. The issues of immediate interest to this Shire are the draft recommendations of the Economic Regulation Authority on the appropriate level and structure of tariffs for the 3 year period commencing 1st July 2013. Submissions may be made on the issues in the report prior to 4.00pm on Monday 22nd October. Residential Customers in Country On average, residential customers in country areas would face an increase in the water bills of 13.0% over the period from 2012/13 to 2015/16. On average, residential customers in country areas will benefit from a 9.3% decrease in their wastewater payments over the period from 2012/13 to 2015/16. Commercial Customers in Country On average, country commercial water customers would benefit from a decrease of 0.2% in their water bills over the period 2012/13 to 2015/16.

On average, country commercial wastewater customers would benefit form a 19.5% decrease in their wastewater payments over the period 2012/13 to 2015/16. A copy of the Draft Report is available in the office for perusal. Water Services Customer Code The Discussion Paper outlines the principals on aspects of the code of conduct for water service providers in WA. The public was invited to make comment by 2nd October 2012, however, the comments made on the principles will result in a draft code being prepared and the response will be made available for comment. A copy of the Discussion Paper is available in the office for comment. Acting Chief Executive Officers Position My thanks to Mr Peter Bradbrook for deputising on my behalf during the period of my absence on the long awaited overseas trip by my wife and I. By all accounts, and Peter’s words, he obviously enjoyed his 6 week period in Lake Grace despite having the responsibility of framing a budget in a period of financial difficulties. The search for a replacement CEO continues and I will remain in an acting capacity during this period.

My Resilient Child Workshops

Experienced parent coach and specialist Debbie Bushall presented “My Resilient Child” workshops on Tuesday 25th at Lake King and Wednesday 26th September at Lake Grace. These workshops focussed on building optimism and resilience in children, which better enables them to deal with challenging and stressing situations throughout their lives. Those who attended found the seminar entertaining and informative, learning that it is not what you say; it is the tone you use that people relate and react to above all. Debbie advised that the best tone is one which is firm, warm and loving. In addition to tone the workshop explored the subtle messages we can send with our facial expressions and in particular the feeling of contempt. Resilient children are able to take turns and have the ability to wait while not receiving attention or items immediately. Parents were encouraged to listen more and to pepper their children with compliments reinforcing their good qualities.

Parents were interested to learn the 5 to 1 ratio which gives a guide on the number of positive to negative interactions we need to have with our children for our relationships to survive from childhood to adult, if we have 100 interactions with our child per day 80+ of those should be positive and no more than 20 should be negative. Food for thought! Thank you to the Lake King P&C and Slarke Catering for the supper on Tuesday night and the light lunch Wednesday. The Seminar acknowledged that parenting is the most important role in anyone’s life.

Firebreaks The Shire has received numerous calls from landowners in regard to the property on the Holt Rock South Rd, currently in the hands of administrators, expressing concerns over the condition of the firebreaks. The Shire is working with the administrators to resolve this issue. In the Shire of Lake Grace, on rural land, firebreaks must

The Shire has reviewed the waste management operations to assess value of the existing service to the community. The review of the license conditions and use of the manned tip sites of Lake Grace and Newdegate has identified changes to improve operational efficiency including:

Reducing weekend manned tip site hours to

reduce costs

Change tip opening times to provide more

efficient work roster

Lake grace license does not require tip to be

manned but fenced when not open to the public

Newdegate tip is required to be manned but will

seek to amend license in future

Lake King & Varley rubbish tips are not required

The new tip opening times will come into operation from 29th October 2012. Bulk Recycling Containers

The cost of the bulk recycling containers has also been assessed. The service is inefficient in that cardboard is not compacted prior to pick up and there is also no cost recovery system in place for Shire to recover costs. This service will cease at the end of October 2012 or sooner if the containers are full to capacity. The Shire rents 6 of these containers. The Shire is looking at alternative options to manage recyclables and divert them from landfill. Sites will be established at the Shire rubbish tips for the community to separate recyclables.

Gas Bottles Missing

It has been noticed gas bottles have been removed from Shire premises in Lake Grace. Please report any extra gas bottles you see around the town 9890 2500.


Farmers are urged to start monitoring their paddocks for emerging locusts, with hatchings already reported in the Yilgarn and Lake Grace shires. The hatchings are in line with the department’s predictions for early season emergence, particularly in the southern and south-eastern parts of the agricultural region.

Autumn monitoring by the department indicated high density hatchings may occur in parts of the Ravensthorpe, Jerramungup, Gnowangerup, Esperance (Cascades), Kent, Broomehill-Tambellup, Lake Grace and Katanning shires.

The bulk of the insects are expected to emerge during late September and early October. Emerging locusts will only be about the size of a small ant but will hop when disturbed.

Control of locusts on-farm is a landholder responsibility and it is in their economic interest to do so. There are registered chemicals available commercially and the department can provide advice on control options.

The department will undertake surveillance to assist landholders to make timely decisions on control. If while doing monitoring farmers come across hatching egg beds they can assist the department’s surveillance efforts by reporting this to their local DAFWA office (Katanning, Albany or Esperance). Where agreed, the department will offer services for a locally co-ordinated

approach for landholder control in recognised high density areas.

Busy bees and a hard working ant weren’t a match for the Pin Cushion Hakea in the latest of the photo competitions hosted by the Lake Grace Community Resource Centre. Macro was the subject of the latest photo competition with nine entries being submitted. With the pin cushion securing 44 of the 189 votes cast, it proved to be an eye-catching winner in the popularity polls. Well done to Trish Medlen for winning the competition, she now has bragging rights in the Medlen household! The macro images were popular with the walk through customers with quite unbelievable detail showing up that isn’t visible to the naked eye. This will be the last competition held for 2012 as the latter couple of months of the year can become quite frantic. However the competition will be back again in 2013. Competition subjects for 2013 will be: Festive (March) Old Things (June) Around Lake Grace (Youth [July]) Wheels (September)

The CRC welcomes everyone to take part in this competition as it sparks a great deal of interest and enjoyment with the customers that come into the centre. With the first competition being centre around ’Festive’, everyone needs to make sure they have their cameras out over the Christmas and New Year period.

Western Australia has claimed the spoils at the Australian Under-18 Championships in North Launceston today, clean sweeping the major accolades during a stunning performance. The Sandgropers finished the tournament with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals from the eight disciplines, as well as the boys and girls trophies, and the Robert Middleton Overall Champions Trophy. Celebrating the state's first win was the boys' triples contingent of Jamie Conway, Matthew Ayres and David Downey, who led from go-to-woe in the showdown against NSW, picking up three shots over the opening two ends, reaching a game-high nine shot lead on the back of a full count of 4, before settling for a 18-12 final score. Headlining the state's victory list was the boys' blue ribbon singles, with Downey snatching victory at the hands of defeat against NSW's Dylan Skinner after powering past a 3-8 shot deficit early on. The Lake Grace ace launched his response over the middle order, squaring the game 19-all on the penultimate end with 2 shots, and claiming the golden medallion with a further 2 on the final end, 21-19. Meanwhile, Western Australia's silver medals in the

girls' and triples, and bronze medals in the singles and fours helped them fend off Queensland and South Australia by two points in the battle for the girls trophy, despite the Maroons earning two gold in the girls event. The Maroons' gold medal wins both featured Bribie Island's Natasha Jones, who capped off her 21-20 blue ribbon singles win against South Australia Renee McPharlin with a similarly slender 19-18 triumph in the pairs, skipping Madison Jones, over reigning champion Elizabeth Allan and Rechelle Cole, from Western Australia. In the boys' fours, ACT secured their only gold medal, in addition to their silver, by edging out hometown heroes Tasmania. Michael McQueen, Flynn O'Shaughnessy, Daniel Thomas and Trent Britton took home the silverware for the ACT courtesy of their 17-8 win. The final gold medal of the tournament was earned by South Australia girls' fours line-up of Lynsey Trenordan, Emma Hughes, Cassandra Harvey and Breeanna Dickson after a 2 shot win over NSW, 19-17. * David Downey is a member of the Lake Grace Bowls Club and is Martin Downey’s son.

the picnic food tasted just as yummy indoors. With a big picnic rug spread out everyone was able to enjoy the delicious array of morning tea. Luckily the teddies were very well behaved and used their best manners as they were very excited. Other activities included playing with bubbles and crawling through the bear cave. Mrs Cobi Stanton had kindly donated a beautiful big white teddy bear for us to raffle. This was won by Lauren and Torah Robertson and raised around $50 for Playgroup. We would like to extend a big thank you to Cobi for her generosity, it is much appreciated. At the end of the morning the kids were given party bags with small items donated by Playgroup WA, and a juice box and some tiny teddy biscuits. All the kids and bears went home very happy (and very tired). We are looking forward to the last term of Playgroup, which begins on Thursday 18th October. We are catering for the Seniors Luncheon on Thursday 1st November so please mark the date in your diary and we will be discussing this over the next couple of weeks. We currently have the largest membership at Playgroup for many years with around 23 families (with 35 children from birth to four years) attending regularly with quite a few more occasional members. It is terrific to see Playgroup so vibrant and everyone getting so much enjoyment from it. We look forward to welcoming new members at
