Introduction

Thistemplateissetuptoyielda36”x48”poster.

We’veputintheheadingsthatareusuallyincludedinposters;youcancopyandpasteandchangeasneeded.Theheadingsizeissetto28andwillbereadableat5to8feet.Ifyourheadingsneedmoreroom,adjustthesize.Itsbesttomakeallheadingsthesamesize.Useyourlongestheadingtogaugethesize.

Wesuggestyouuseblacktextagainstawhite/lightbackgroundsothatitiseasytoread.Ourtextisinbluesoyou’llknowwhichtextisyours– besuretogetridofanythingweputin.TochangethebackgroundcolorselectBackgroundundertheFormatmenu.Rememberthatmoreinkcoverageincreasesprintingtime.

Theboxesaroundthetextwillautomaticallyfitthetextyoutype.Ifyouclickonthetext,youcanusethelittlehandlesthatappeartostretchorsqueezethetextboxestowhateversizeyouwant.YoucandeletethebordersbygoingtoFormat>ColorsandLinesandthenselectingNoLine.

Thebodytextsizeissetto14(28@200%).Thiswillbereadablefrom5to8feet.Ifyouraudiencewillviewthepostercloseryoumayreducethetextto12,butthiswouldbethesmallestsuggestedsize.Linespacingissettoaddspacebeforeaparagraph(hardreturn)soyouwillnotneedtoreturntwicetoaddspacebetweenparagraphs.Ifyouneedalinebreakbutdon’twanttheextraspace,positionthecursorwhereyouwantthelinetobreakandpressshift+return.

ResultsTobringdatainfromExcelselectthechartandchooseEdit>Copy,andthenchooseEdit>PasteinPowerPoint.Thechartcanthenbestretchedtofitasrequired.Ifyouneedtoeditpartsofthechart,itcanbeungrouped.Watchoutforscientificsymbolsusedinimportedcharts,whichPowerPointwillnotrecognizeasausedfontandmayprintimproperlyifthefontisnotinstalledonoursystem.

TobringtextinfromWordselectthetexttobebroughtintoPowerPoint,chooseEdit>Copy,thenEdit>Pastethetextintoaneworexistingtextblock.Thistextiseditable.Youcanchangethesize,color,etc.usingFormat>Text.Avoidusingshadowsonsmallertext.

Imagesshouldbe100dpiintheirfinalsize,orusearuleofthumbof2to4megabytesofuncompressed.tiffilepersquarefootofimage.Forinstance,a3x5”photothatwillbe6x10”insizeonthefinalpostershouldbescannedat200ppi.Rememberthatthistemplateissetupathalfsize,soanythingthatis3x5”onthetemplatewillbe6x10”onthefinalpiece.Table1totherightgivessuggestedscanningresolutionstoobtainanimagethatwillbe100initsfinalsize.Table2givessuggestedscanningresolutionsforslides.Whenpossibleuseaslidescannerratherthanaflatbedscanneradaptedtoslidestogetthebestresultswhenscanningslides.

Ifyouuseadigitalcameratoacquireimagesthereacoupleofthingstobeawareof.Thestandard480x640pixeldigitalpictureshouldnotbeanylargerthanabout8x10"onyourposter.Megapixeldigitalpicturescangoquiteabitlarger,theruleofthumbisforthemtobe100ppiintheactualsize.Tohaveanimagethat's10x20”and100ppi,itshouldbe1000x2000pixels.

ItisbesttoimporttiffimagesintoPowerPoint.JPEGfilesareOK,buttheywillbebetterqualityifyoucanconvertthemtotiff.Remember– JPEGisalousycompressionfileformatwhichmeansyouloosepixelinformationandquality.

MaterialsandMethodsThedottedlinesthroughthecenterofthistextboxareguidesandwillnotprint,theyarethereforalignment.Tomovethem,click,holdanddragthemtoanewlocation.Asyoudrag,thecursorwillchangefromanarrowtothenumericvaluesforthexandyposition.Useguidestogetyourpicturesand/ortextboxesalignedtogether.

Conclusions

Iftheproportionsoftheprintyouwantaredifferentthanyourimage,youshouldcropit. Forexample,ifyouscana4x6"photo,andyouwanttoprint16x20",youhavetotakealittleoffthewidth.Otherwiseitwouldprintas16x24"(whichhasthesameproportionsoraspectratioas4x6’). Simplycalculatethewidthdividedbytheheight,andmakesurethisratiocorrespondstoyourprintsize.

DoallimageeditingincludingcroppingandresizinginagraphicssoftwarebeforebringingtheimageintoPowerPoint.
