Program Structure:MASTERS IN SYSTEMS BIOLOGY
a. Research and preparation of a thesis
b. RARA6014 Research Methodology Course (4 credit hours) and other relevant courses (2 credit hours)
c. General Seminar (10 hours)Candidates must attend seminars, workshops and training sessions that are related to systems biology as identified by the institute.
d. Specific Seminar (5 hours)Candidates must attend seminars, workshops and training sessions that are related to their field as proposed by the supervisor and Masters Committee.
e. Research Seminar (8 hours)Candidates must give a presentation on the research done as below:• Presentation of paper proposal in Semester 1• Presentation of research progress in each Semester (2,3)• Presentation of research findings in the middle or end of Semester 4(as preparation for oral examination)
f. Publish at least one article in a journal in ISI/Scopus(accepted for publication) before completion of studies.
MASTERS IN SYSTEMS BIOLOGYg. Candidates with no related background field (for example, those with computer
sciences background who are interested to do research on biological systems) are required to attend courses proposed by the Graduate Committee, while biologists will be required to take courses related to other than Biological Sciences, as proposed by the Graduate Committee.

c. General Seminar (25 hours)candidates must attend seminars, workshops and training sessions that are related to systems biology as identified by the institute.
d. Specific Seminar (20 hours)Candidates must attend seminars, workshops and training sessions that are related to their field as proposed by the supervisor and Doctor of Philosophy Committee.
e. Research Seminar (15 hours)Candidates must give a presentation on the research done as below:• Presentation of paper proposal in Semester 1• Presentation of research progress in each Semester (2,3,4 and 5)• Presentation of research findings in the middle or end of Semester 6(as preparation for oral examination)

Graduate Studies Act, 1984
1. Thesis :1.1 A candidate is not permitted to re‐submit any thesis which haspreviously been presented to UKM, or any other university, but mayinclude parts of his/her previous work provided they are clearlyreferenced.
1.2 If agreed upon by the supervisor or Graduate Committee, acandidate may publish papers based on his/her work done during theperiod of candidature, provided they contain due acknowledgement tothe University
1.3 The Doctor of Philosophy thesis shall not exceed 100,000words. The Master’s thesis (without coursework) shall not exceed60,000 words. The Master’s thesis with coursework shall not exceed30,000 words. The prescribed total number of words does not includefootnotes, quotations, appendices, summaries, schedule, charts etc.

1. Thesis :1.4 Permission to exceed the number of prescribed words in the thesis may be obtained by writing to the Dean CGS at least three months before submission of the thesis for examination.
1.5 The thesis shall be written in Bahasa Malaysia, to be preceded by an abstract, and the translation the abstract in English or Arabic. Under certain circumstance, a thesis may be written in English or Arabic with the translated abstract in Bahasa Malaysia, and a longer abstract, also in Bahasa Malaysia, not exceeding 1000 words. Any request to write a thesis in any other language (English or Arabic only) shall be made to the Dean CGS for consideration and approval.
1.6 Regulations on preparation of the thesis are stipulated in the Panduan Menulis Tesis Gaya UKM (The UKM Style Guide)
Graduate Studies Act, 1984
1. Thesis :1.7 A candidate who submits his/her thesis shall:
1.7.1 notify the Dean, CGS, in writing three months prior to submitting his/her thesis for examination;
1.7.2 obtain prior written approval from the supervisor.
1.8 A candidate shall submit five copies of his/her thesis which has been approved by the Senate to CGS at the end of his/her study programme.
1.9 The thesis may be published only with permission from the University.
1.10 A candidate who fails the degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be considered for the Master of Philosophy degree if the Board of Graduate Examiners is of the opinion that the thesis submitted does not meet the standard required for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.
