Johnson and Scholes (Exploring Corporate Strategy) define strategy as follows:
"Strategy is the direction and scope of an organization over the long-term: which achieves
advantage for the organization through its configuration of resources within a challenging
environment, to meet the needs of markets and to fulfill stakeholder expectations".
In other words, strategy is about:
* Where is the business trying to get to in the long-term (direction)
* Which markets should a business compete in and what kinds of activities are involved in such
markets? (markets; scope)
* How can the business perform better than the competition in those markets? (Advantage)?
* What resources (skills, assets, finance, relationships, technical competence, and facilities) are
required in order to be able to compete? (Resources)?
* What external, environmental factors affect the businesses' ability to compete?
(Environment)?
* What are the values and expectations of those who have power in and around the business?
(stakeholders)
Strategy at Different Levels of a Business
Strategies exist at several levels in any organization - ranging from the overall business (or group
of businesses) through to individuals working in it.
Corporate Strategy - is concerned with the overall purpose and scope of the business to meet
stakeholder expectations. This is a crucial level since it is heavily influenced by investors in the
business and acts to guide strategic decision-making throughout the business. Corporate strategy
is often stated explicitly in a "mission statement".
Business Unit Strategy - is concerned more with how a business competes successfully in a
particular market. It concerns strategic decisions about choice of products, meeting needs of
customers, gaining advantage over competitors, exploiting or creating new opportunities etc.
Operational Strategy - is concerned with how each part of the business is organized to deliver
the corporate and business-unit level strategic direction. Operational strategy therefore focuses on
issues of resources, processes, people etc.
How Strategy is Managed - Strategic Management
In its broadest sense, strategic management is about taking "strategic decisions" - decisions that
answer the questions above.
In practice, a thorough strategic management process has three main components, shown in the
figure below:
Strategic Analysis
This is all about the analyzing the strength of businesses' position and understanding the
important external factors that may influence that position. The process of Strategic Analysis can
be assisted by a number of tools, including:
PEST Analysis - a technique for understanding the "environment" in which a business operates
Scenario Planning - a technique that builds various plausible views of possible futures for a
business
Five Forces Analysis - a technique for identifying the forces which affect the level of
competition in an industry
Market Segmentation - a technique which seeks to identify similarities and differences between
groups of customers or users
Directional Policy Matrix - a technique which summarizes the competitive strength of a
business’s operations in specific markets
Competitor Analysis - a wide range of techniques and analysis that seeks to summaries a
businesses' overall competitive position
Critical Success Factor Analysis - a technique to identify those areas in which a business must
outperform the competition in order to succeed
SWOT Analysis - a useful summary technique for summarizing the key issues arising from an
assessment of a business’s "internal" position and "external" environmental influences.
Strategic Choice
This process involves understanding the nature of stakeholder expectations (the "ground rules"),
identifying strategic options, and then evaluating and selecting strategic options.
Strategy Implementation
Often the hardest part. When a strategy has been analyzed and selected, the task is then to
translate it into organizational action.
Strategy adopted by powercap:

Purchase department
Purchasing department is to procure all necessary materials needed for production or daily
operation of the company. For a manufacturing company, raw material is the major factor. And
also include tools, machinery, delivery trucks or even the office supplies needed for the
secretaries and sales team. In a retail environment, the purchasing department makes sure there is
always sufficient product on the shelves or in the warehouses to keep the customers happy and
keep the store well-stocked. With a small business, it is especially important to keep inventory
ordering at a reasonable level; investing large amounts of capital in excess stock could result in
storage problems and in a shortage of capital for other expenditures such as advertising or
research and development. Purchasing also oversees all of the vendors that supply a company
with the items it needs to operate properly.
Powercap makes purchases of raw materials from different cities and other states. The tax for the
local cities is based on 2% and 14.5% and it varies in other states. The bill of the whole purchase
department is handling by P.O (purchase officer). For purchasing raw materials from the same
state, doesn’t require any procedure or rules to be followed but when it comes to purchase of raw
materials in different states or countries certain procedures have to be followed as rules and
regulations differ from each and every government. They have to show proof like modes of
transport as it carried out in railways lorry or airways or shipment etc. there are separate forms
issued by the government such as form F and form C issued by the other state governments for
providing raw materials or purchasing goods from those state. Tax is implemented on this. And
expenses are claimed as on railways or any other transport. If the product cost concession is
around 14.5 % and the manufacturing and selling concession is around 5 % means we can claim
amount by following certain procedure mentioned by the government of India. Powercap gets
supplies from other states and cities in bulk as its manufacturing process is huge and they are
getting quality raw materials only to manufacture their quality products. They are following all
the legal procedures in the purchase department.
Production department
The main department in any manufacturing company is absolutely called production department.
Production department is the heart of a company. It should be given more importance to develop
the company.
In this area powercap gives more importance to production department. Skilled labourers are
placed in this department and high quality machineries are installed. Quality products is the high
feature of this company they provide quality products to the customers.
The manufacturing facility spreads about 10,500 sq.feet, well equipped with sophisticated
machineries and instruments staffed over 100 employees. To its credit powercap has been
certified as an ISO/TS 16949:2002 company. The company has adequate production capacity,
which helps them to execute both high volume as well as small specialized job , at premium
quality.
The manpower at powercap is highly motivated, enthusiastic and dedicated towards total
customer satisfaction in quality and service for the manufacturer and the supply of transformer
and coils. The company’s unflinching and unwavering focus and commitment helps them to
achieve the goal through continuous improvement of the quality management system, skill level
of people and technology deployed.

Inspection:
There are several stages in the production of a product and inspection is carried out on each
stage so that a quality product is being produced.
In each stage the process is being inspected by the specialized technicians and the process is
being carried out. This shows the companies standard and their importance given on the product
Process in inspection

Quality control
Inspection department works on this and checks the quality control and ensures that the all the
products are on the same wave length and all the products produced are of a good quality as
required.
Soldering
Soldering is a process whereby two or more metal parts (wires, component leads, pipes, etc.) are
joined by the melting of a metal between them. The melting metal is known as solder.
Traditionally, it was usually composed of an alloy of primarily tin and lead, but due to current
environmental regulations, the use of lead in solder is becoming rare. The soldering process
requires the heating of the parts of the connection to "wetting" temperature, the temperature at
which the solder will chemically alloy with the metal parts being soldered. This temperature is
dependent upon the alloy of solder that is being used; with “traditional" alloys, it is
approximately 500 degrees F. Current
No-lead solders require considerably higher wetting temperatures. In either case, if "wetting"
temperature is not reached, when the solder is applied to the connection, it will melt and flow
onto the metal parts, but will not alloy with them, thereby causing a "cold solder joint". By the
way, cold solder joints are NOT usually dull and grainy. Dull and grainy solder joints are
overheated. Cold solder joints appear uneven and lumpy, and lay on the surface of the
connection like water on a waxed car hood - the solder does not flow out smoothly.
Testing
There are two process involved in testing of a product one , HVBD test,
And last process of final testing.
Packing
The transformers are neatly packed and arranged in separate box and are sent carefully.
Megaline
Megaline is a separate place in the factory where heavy goods are being carried out. Its non-
human that is it’s all about machineries everything is carried out by machines. Here special
skilled workers are employed to access those machineries for producing heavy and technical
goods.
Sales department
Prices of products are fixed by the head business development manager. Sales department is
depending upon design and development department as both are under one category. The prices
are fixed on the basis of manufacturing expenses and quantity mentioned and quality of the
product. The tax concession and duty charges are same as it is mentioned.

power amplifiers, filters, etc. they are demanded for their high reliability and high saturation
current.
Ferrite Beads are a kind of inductors having center holes and are composed of ferromagnetic
material. When placed onto a current carrying conductor it acts as a choke. Ferrite beads
inductors are used to keep out unwanted signals or for decoupling on dc supply and some signal
lines.
They are demanded because they work like inductors but work in those areas which are parasitic
for regular inductors. At high frequencies, our ferrite core rod and ferrite bead inductors work
like resistors instead of inductors. Our company is capable of designing and manufacturing

Marketing department
The marketing department must act as a guide and lead the company's other departments in
developing, producing, fulfilling, and servicing products or services for their customers.
Communication is vital. The marketing department typically has a better understanding of the
market and customer needs, but should not act independently of product development or
customer service. Marketing should be involved, and there should be a meeting of the minds,
whenever discussions are held regarding new product development or any customer-related
function of the company.
In powercap, marketing department depends on design and development department as they
design and produce the products. Design and development department are related with the
marketing department as marketing department shows the status and checks the needs of the
consumer and provides information to design and development department. So both these
departments depend on each other.
Accounting department :
Most important department and a must needed department of any company is the accounting
department. The purpose of accounting for a business is to have a record of the receipts and
expenditures of it's daily activities. Also, accounting makes it available for the business owners
to assess and analyze the business's performance. This will help the owner to decide what
improvements they need to make, or what practices to keep doing in order to keep the
company at it's successful place. In order to file for tax returns, apply for a loan to expand your
business, or for certain legal purposes, accounting is necessary. Accounting for your small
business is also important so you are able to assess your financial performance. The financial
statements such as the balance sheet and cash flow statement show financial information that
is important in the success of your business. The balance sheet shows how much your business
is worth and what your assets are. The cash flow statement shows where the future cash needs
of your business are. Without any of these financial statements your business would not be
able to account for the revenues and profits made from day to day, which results in mistakes
and inaccurate records.
Functions of Accounting Department
There are lots of routine functions which accounting department has to do. To record the
transaction on the basis of invoice, bills and vouchers, keep bills and vouchers in safe place
after including them in files, to pay the creditors and employees, to collect and monitor
debtors, to reconcile the bank statements with his company's bank account.
To Prepare Interim Financial Statements
For different departments decisions, accounting departments prepare interim financial
statements. In these interim financial statements, we can includes trial balance, revenue
statement and balance sheet. Often these statements are prepared after three months.
To Prepare Annual Financial Statements
To prepare annual financial statements is important work of accounting department because
after auditing, it becomes proof in court and large number of decisions are affected from this.
So, it is duty of chief accountant of this department to see
* whether it is prepared according to the current provisions of company law or not?
* Whether all errors are corrected or not?
* Whether all the adjustments are done or not?
* Whether every other things relating to accounting standards are OK or not?
Security of Accounts
After making of accounts on computer and Internet or online mode, to secure the confidential
accounting information is also main duty of accounting department. With unethical use of
hacking, it may be possible that hackers can hack accounting information by breaking your
password. For solution of this, accountant should learn security control. You can learn this
at here.
Inventory Management
If any company is doing work in the area of manufacturing, then it is the duty of accounting
department to manage inventory. For this,
1. # Accounting department should classify each units. Unit may be kg., or gram or any other.
For learning inventory management, you should learn our list of units of measurements of
accounting for inventory at here.
2. # Accounting department should also make stock groups.
3. # Accounting department should also keep stock items under stock categories.
4. # Accounting department should also maintain the multiple godowns also.
5. # Transfer of different raw material cost should be record in production of finished
product.

8. Unique selling proposition:
A USP is one of the fundamental pieces of any solid marketing campaign. Simply stated, it’s a
summary of what makes your business unique and valuable to your target market. It answers
the question: How do your business services benefit your clients better than anyone else can?
Step 1: Describe Your Target Audience
Before you can even start marketing your services, you need to know who you are targeting. In
this step, you want to be as specific as possible. For example, if you are a Web developer with
a CMS expertise, instead of targeting anyone who needs helping building or modifying a
CMS, you may identify your target client as a small business owner who is looking for a
developer well-versed in MODx to customize his/her site.
Step 2: Explain the Problem You Solve
From your prospective clients’ perspective, what is the individual need or challenge they face
that your business can solve for them?
Step 3: List the Biggest Distinctive Benefits
In this step, list 3-5 of the biggest benefits a client gets from choosing to work with you that
they could not get from someone else (i.e., what sets you apart from your competition). Again,
thinking from the clients’ perspective, these benefits should explain why your services are
important to them and why they would choose you over another provider.
Step 4: Define Your Promise
A big part of a successful USP is making a pledge to your clients. While this can be implied
instead of spelled out in your USP, write down this promise you make to your clients in this
step.
Step 5: Combine and Rework
Once you’ve completed steps 1-4, take all of the information you listed and combine it into
one paragraph. There should be some recurring ideas and thoughts, so you’ll want to start
merging statements and rewriting in a way that flows and makes sense.
Step 6: Cut it down
In this step, take your paragraph from step 5 and condense it even more into just a sentence.
You want your final USP to be as specific and simple as possible.
Take your time while doing this exercise and do several drafts over the course of a week until
you arrive at your final USP. A fresh mind and perspective is essential, so I would recommend
doing this at the beginning of your day versus at the end when you are tired. You also may
want to come back and do this exercise again, once you try out your USP for a while, or if
anything changes with your business.

9. SWOT ANALYSIS
SWOT analysis (alternately SLOT analysis) is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the
Strengths, Weaknesses/Limitations, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business
venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the
internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The
technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute
(now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies.
Setting the objective should be done after the SWOT analysis has been performed. This would
allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organization.
Strengths: characteristics of the business, or project team that give it an
advantage over others
Weaknesses (or Limitations): are characteristics that place the team at a
disadvantage relative to others
Opportunities: external chances to improve performance (e.g. make greater
profits) in the environment
Threats: external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the
business or project
Identification of SWOTs is essential because subsequent steps in the process of planning for
achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs.
First, the decision makers have to determine whether the objective is attainable, given the
SWOTs. If the objective is NOT attainable a different objective must be selected and the
process repeated.
Users of SWOT analysis need to ask and answer questions that generate meaningful
information for each category (strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats) in order to
maximize the benefits of this evaluation and find their competitive advantage.
Matching and converting
One way of utilizing SWOT is matching and converting. Matching is used to find competitive
advantages by matching the strengths to opportunities. Converting is to apply conversion
strategies to convert weaknesses or threats into strengths or opportunities. An example of
conversion strategy is to find new markets. If the threats or weaknesses cannot be converted a
company should try to minimize or avoid them.
Internal and external factors
The aim of any SWOT analysis is to identify the key internal and external factors that are
important to achieving the objective. These come from within the company's unique value
chain. SWOT analysis groups key pieces of information into two main categories:
Internal factors – The strengths and weaknesses internal to the organization.
External factors – The opportunities and threats presented by the external
environment to the organization.
The internal factors may be viewed as strengths or weaknesses depending upon their impact on
the organization's objectives. What may represent strengths with respect to one objective may
be weaknesses for another objective. The factors may include all of the 4Ps; as well as
personnel, finance, manufacturing capabilities, and so on. The external factors may include
macroeconomic matters, technological change, legislation, and socio-cultural changes, as well
as changes in the marketplace or competitive position. The results are often presented in the
form of a matrix.
SWOT analysis is just one method of categorization and has its own weaknesses. For example,
it may tend to persuade companies to compile lists rather than think about what is actually
important in achieving objectives. It also presents the resulting lists uncritically and without
clear prioritization so that, for example, weak opportunities may appear to balance strong
threats.
It is prudent not to eliminate too quickly any candidate SWOT entry. The importance of
individual SWOTs will be revealed by the value of the strategies it generates. A SWOT item
that produces valuable strategies is important. A SWOT item that generates no strategies is not
important.
Use of SWOT analysis
The usefulness of SWOT analysis is not limited to profit-seeking organizations. SWOT
analysis may be used in any decision-making situation when a desired end-state (objective) has
been defined. Examples include: non-profit organizations, governmental units, and individuals.
SWOT analysis may also be used in pre-crisis planning and preventive crisis management.
SWOT analysis may also be used in creating a recommendation during a viability study/survey.
Criticism of SWOT
Some findings from Menon et al. (1999) and Hill and Westbrook (1997) have shown that
SWOT may harm performance. Other complementary analyses have been proposed, such as
the
SWOT - landscape analysis
The SWOT-landscape systematically deploys the relationships between overall objective and
underlying SWOT-factors and provides an interactive, query-able 3D landscape.
The SWOT-landscape grabs different managerial situations by visualizing and foreseeing the
dynamic performance of comparable objects according to findings by Brendan Kitts, Leif
Edvinsson and Tord Beding (2000)
Changes in relative performance are continually identified. Projects (or other units of
measurements) that could be potential risk or opportunity objects are highlighted.
SWOT-landscape also indicates which underlying strength/weakness factors that have had or
likely will have highest influence in the context of value in use (for ex. capital value
fluctuations).
Corporate planning
As part of the development of strategies and plans to enable the organization to achieve its
objectives, then that organization will use a systematic/rigorous process known as corporate
planning. SWOT alongside PEST/PESTLE can be used as a basis for the analysis of business and
environmental factors.
Set objectives – defining what the organization is going to do
Environmental scanning
o Internal appraisals of the organization's SWOT, this needs to include an
assessment of the present situation as well as a portfolio of
products/services and an analysis of the product/service life cycle
Analysis of existing strategies, this should determine relevance from the
results of an internal/external appraisal. This may include gap analysis which
will look at environmental factors
Strategic Issues defined – key factors in the development of a corporate plan
which needs to be addressed by the organization
Develop new/revised strategies – revised analysis of strategic issues may mean
the objectives need to change
Establish critical success factors – the achievement of objectives and strategy
implementation
Preparation of operational, resource, projects plans for strategy
implementation
Monitoring results – mapping against plans, taking corrective action which
may mean amending objectives/strategies.
The SWOT Matrix:-A firm should not necessarily pursue the more lucrative opportunities.
Rather, it may have a better chance at developing a competitive advantage by identifying a fit
between the firm’s strengths and upcoming opportunities. In some cases, the firm can
overcome a weakness in order to prepare itself to pursue a compelling opportunity. To develop
strategies that take into account the SWOT profile, a matrix of these factors can be
constructed. The SWOT matrix (also known as a TOWS Matrix) is shown below:
SWOT / TOWS Matrix
Strengths Weaknesses
Opportunities S-O strategies W-O-strategies
Threats S-T strategies W-T strategies
S-O strategies pursue opportunities that are a good fit to the company's strengths.
W-O strategies overcome weaknesses to pursue opportunities.
S-T strategies identify ways that the firm can use its strengths to reduce its
vulnerability to external threats.
W-T strategies establish a defensive plan to prevent the firm's weaknesses from
making it highly susceptible to external threats.
Marketing
In many competitor analyses, marketers build detailed profiles of each competitor in the
market, focusing especially on their relative competitive strengths and weaknesses using
SWOT analysis. Marketing managers will examine each competitor's cost structure, sources of
profits, resources and competencies, competitive positioning and product differentiation,
degree of vertical integration, historical responses to industry developments, and other factors.
Marketing management often finds it necessary to invest in research to collect the data
required to perform accurate marketing analysis. Accordingly, management often conducts
market research (alternately marketing research) to obtain this information. Marketers employ
a variety of techniques to conduct market research, but some of the more common include:
Qualitative marketing research, such as focus groups
Quantitative marketing research, such as statistical surveys
Experimental techniques such as test markets
Observational techniques such as ethnographic (on-site) observation
Marketing managers may also design and oversee various environmental scanning and
competitive intelligence processes to help identify trends and inform the company's
marketing analysis.
