ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES – WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Presented by Department of BiotechnologyDepartment of Microbiology
EARTH’S ENVIRONMENT
The natural environment is the set of living and non-living things on Earth which occur in a state substaintially not Influenced by humans. It’s an environment that encompases the interaction of all living species.
BUT EARTH IS CHANGING RAPIDLY AS A RESULT OF HUMAN ACTIONS AND GETTING WORSE, NOT BETTER.
Why ?
Here comes the environmental changesClimate changeNutrient enrichmentToxin accumulationOzone depletionEmergence of diseasesThreat to BiodiversityNatural calamitiesOcean acidification
THE FACTORS FOR THIS CHANGE• Deforestation• Over Fishing• Industrialization• Pollution• Destroying the wildlifes• Greenhouse gases
In this mean time the most critical patient is Earth !
THREATS TO BIODIVERSITY
Biodiversity means Variety and Variability of Species
Ephemeral phenomenon
all forms of life, including all species and genetic variants within species
all ecosystems that contain and sustain those diverse forms of life.
Impact of climate change on bioviversity
Ability to find food
What do they eat?
Plants on the move!
1976
2005
White spruce trees in the upper Savage River in Denali National Park, AK.
Geographic response to climate change
Species migrating into new areas as temperatures warm
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Community actions for impact reduction Control of forest fires Do not use slash & burn crop wastes.
Plaugh them back to land Restrict use of bioenergy & biofuels No permission for coal-based
industries after 2010 Use of clean energies like solar and
wind power for running industries and household lights.
Total ban on fuel woods (storage of wet carbon) for energy
Use incinerators for burning dead bodies
Capture of CO2 from air
RECYCLING IS THE BEST POLICY
Engineering for ChangeSafe environment Engineering issues give the hazardous environment first response and safety solutions.
