The Theremin is named after its inventor, the noted Russian scientist, Leon Theremin, a n d is unique i n that the performer never fouches i t ' w h i l e p l a y i n g . The tone is p r o d u c e d w h e n the performer enters an electro­magnetic f i e l d that is developed a b o u i the instrument. The pi tch becomes h igher or lower as the r i g h t h a n d approaches or moves a w a y from the ver t i ca l rod ; the volume is control led b y the distance of the left h a n d f rom the metal loop.
