Unit 1 Grammar Review
A review of the grammar standards we have used in the first 9 weeks this
school year
Prepositions
• Prepositions are POSITION words
• You should be able to take the prepositional phrase out completely, and your sentence still makes sense.
• Some people say it is what a mouse can do to a box
• Common prepositions: above, around, about, across, after, against, at, before, below, between, by, down, for, from, in, into, near, of, on, onto, over, through, to, toward, under, until, up, with
Interjections
• One or two words set off with an exclamation point (!) or a comma (,)
• These are never a complete sentence
• These are words that show emotion, but stand all by themselves
• They are usually at the beginning or the end of a sentence
ConjunctionsCoordinating Conjunctions
• Join two independent clauses, two subjects, or two predicates
• Can be remembered with FANBOY
F = for
A = and
N = nor
B = but
O = or
Y = yet
S = so
Subordinating Conjunction
• Joins ONE independent and ONE dependent clause
• Can be remembered with ISAWBUB
I = If
S = Since
A = After
W = When / While
B = Because
U = Until
B = Before
