There seems to be confusion out there regarding the current status and activities of the Nebraska Nurses Association. I think this is a great time to separate the “faCts” from the “fiction” by answering some frequently asked questions (FAQs).
Q: The dues seem expensive and I don’t know why I need to join ANA and NNA?
A: While the dues for these two organizations is higher than some of the other specialty organizations, it is important to keep in mind that the ANA is constantly working on national standards, collaboration with other nursing associations to present the “voice” of nursing nationally, to maintain high standards of accreditation of continuing education and credentialing of nurses and facilities through certifications and Magnet Recognition®, respectively. Nursing scope of practice statutes, rules, and regulations are determined at the state level and this requires a strong state level association to monitor and address proposed legislation that might adversely affect the scope of nursing practice or the safety of the public. This requires lobbying at the state level, and lobbying, unfortunately, is based on the funds available to influence the thoughts and votes of lawmakers. Last year’s failed legislation for full scope of practice for Nurse Practitioners vividly revealed that we don’t have the fiscal or human resources we need to override the influence of the Chief Medical Officer in our state. Only a united and organized voice for nursing in our state can create the resources and influence we need to sustain success. NNA is the only nursing association in Nebraska to come close to the resources and structures to make this happen. I believe that $23.75 a month is worth the investment! (New nurses get a 50% discount for their first year of membership.)

NNA: Fact or Fiction?Q: When I join ANA and NNA does my ANA enrollment information automatically get me into the NNA website and populate that data base too?
A: Unfortunately, we are not yet able to provide a fully integrated “single sign-on process.” When you update ANA information, such as a new telephone number, email or address, you must also go to the NNA webpage to update your information there too. We are working hard to create a user-friendly process, but for now you must update and monitor your information in both areas. If you have questions about this process, changing your membership status, joining us as a member, or how to access the ever-growing list of benefits provided by the ANA and NNA, contact Melissa Florell, Director of State Affairs at 888-885-7025, Ext. 400.
Q: Should I join now, if I don’t have time to be an active member?
A: There is not an organization or association that will turn away a card-carrying, dues-paying member. While we need and want your active participation, ideas, and feedback, we will take your monetary support first. We only have the funds to pay $20,000 annually for lobbying, we can only support a part-time Director of State Affairs and we no longer have an office or presence in Lincoln. The NNA Board of Directors volunteer their time to fill in the gaps and this group is stretched as far as they can be. Without a strong infrastructure to manage our association, we can’t be as responsive to our member needs, we can’t move ahead with the changes to move to a high level of technological support, and we can’t create the unified voice to protect nursing practice in Nebraska.
Q: As a part of the Midwest Multi-State Division (MSD), is NNA no longer a separate organization?
A: Being a member of the Midwest MSD provides the six participating states with a chance to negotiate better contracts for services, save money by purchasing together, and to support each other with our best practices and shared

resources. The NNA will always remain an active state association, and the strength and level of that activity will depend on the membership level and what members say we need to do.
Q: Have NNA Districts gone away? A: We are currently midway through a two year District
reorganization pilot. At this time the evidence is pointing toward the elimination of Districts as membership divisions, and the retention of regions for membership support and events. In 2015, we will work on defining a structure of Mutual Interest Groups (MIGs) that could support members to engage with fellow members virtually on common interests such as rural nursing, advanced practice, or safe patient handling and to engage concretely for regional events, meetings, or forums. The flexibility of such a structure would allow those areas of the state that want and need to meet face-to-face to continue to do so, and will allow the connection of members from across our vast state to

many of the members filling these roles will be ineligible to serve again after their terms expire. Many of these members are within 10 years or less from retirement and their leadership strengths and the legacy of our work will be lost when they do retire. We have 2-5 years to involve new, younger leaders and to orient them to these leadership roles. While the Board of Directors (BOD) are working hard to identify what younger members and new nurses see as the membership benefits and to build a structure and process to provide them, if is difficult for nurses from one generation to create the association that will meet the needs of the other generations in our association. We need new leaders to engage right now! At this time, there is no one who has expressed the desire and/or demonstrated the skill set needed to be the next President of NNA. That is keeping me awake at night. I have committed to a five year commitment to guide this association through the changes of these turbulent times. We have to identify who will take over that role when elections occur during the summer of 2015.

The sixth annual American Nurses Advocacy Institute (ANAI) face-to-face sessions were held Sunday, October 5th - Tuesday, October 7th in Washington, DC. I had the privilege of attending, along with Jordan Colwell, RN, on behalf of NNA. Twenty-three nurses from eighteen states, interested in honing their political leadership skills, kicked off this year-long mentored program. Sessions included sustaining policy change delivered by Minnesota House Majority Leader and Registered Nurse, Erin Murphy. We also learned the complexities of navigating the legislative process and importance of conducting a political environmental scan to determine the viability of advancing legislation. A particularly helpful and engaging session was on messaging. Following a presentation by Communication and Public Relation Specialists, attendees broke into small groups to prepare talking points based on assigned topic and audience. Topics included safe staffing, removing regulatory barriers for APRNs, and emerging health care roles. Designated audiences included media, legislators and nurse colleagues.
Additionally, we had time designated for visits to Capitol Hill to address two of ANA’s legislative priorities: Safe Staffing and Durable Medical Equipment. If you are interested in this program, you can learn more on ANA’s website http://www.nursingworld.org/MainMenuCategories/Policy-Advocacy/AdvocacyResourcesTools. If you are interested in attending ANAI in the future watch for information on the Nebraska Nurses Association’s website. Interest and application is made through your state nurses association. You must be a NNA/ANA member to be considered.
As I shared in my presentation at NNA Convention, the issues that nurses encounter at the bedside lay the groundwork for future policy and legislation. In order for Registered Nurses to practice to the full extent of education and licensure, and to ensure safe and effective patient care, each RN practicing in Nebraska must engage on nursing issues. Engagement can happen at any level. This can mean joining the Nebraska Nurses Association and keeping the association informed of the issues you are facing in your practice. It can also mean writing elected officials and providing testimony regarding pieces of legislation that affect nursing practice or patient safety. Engagement in advocacy can also mean getting to know your elected officials, volunteering for a campaign, or even running for office yourself. Advocacy on the part of nurses is the best way to ensure that our issues are addressed in policy and legislation.
ANAI provided training that will be extremely useful during the upcoming legislative session. Many of the issues we discussed at ANAI will be debated during Nebraska’s Legislative session. Allowing APRNs to transition to full practice authority, determining the best method to insure the most vulnerable Nebraskans, and many other nursing issues are issues are likely to be discussed. Be watching the NNA website over the coming weeks for advocacy and issue updates. Engage and help us be a part of the policy discussion on the local, state, and national level! The Nebraska Nurses Association is working to support the practice of Registered Nurses and we need your voice!

2014NebraskaNursesAssociationElectionResultsThe annual ballot for the Nebraska Nurses Association
(NNA) concluded on September 27, 2014. The online ballot was open to all members of NNA. All ballots were casted using the online system, as no paper ballots were requested. The ballot included 22 positions and involved 79 candidates. Notification of the ballot was sent to members via e-mail and posted on the NNA website; two reminder messages were also sent. A total of 120 ballots were submitted.
This year’s ballot was the first election reflecting the new organizational structural for the organization. In 2013, the NNA House of Delegates approved the new governance structure that combined former Commissions and Committees into 3 Committees, Legislative Advocacy and Representation Committee (LARC), Nursing Professional Development Committee (NPDC), and the Governance, Finance, and Membership Committee (GFMC). Additionally, there were two (2) Board of Director positions on the ballot.
The 2014 ballot positions included: • VicePresident• Treasurer• Legislative Advocacy and Representation
Committee (LARC) – the role of the LARC is to plan and implement activities related to professional security and nurse advocacy and to represent NNA’s positions on state and local concerns, as defined by NNA’s approved legislative platform.¡North Region¡West Region¡East Region¡At Large

Per the current NNA Bylaws Article VI Section 5 Apportionment, representation at the House of Delegates require an apportionment of Districts members. In order to comply with the Bylaws, members were asked to submit their name as a District Delegate candidate earlier in the year; the District Delegate ballot was open only to members of their respective District (e.g., District 7 members could only vote for Delegate candidates representing District 7).

The 2014 Nurses Political reception was held on Tuesday, August 26th, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Thompson Center on UNO’s campus. This event, historically hosted by Nebraska Nurses Association (NNA) District 2, provided nurses with the opportunity to share concerns with local and state representatives on a one-to-one basis, to participate in the political process, and demonstrate the strength of nursing’s influence in elections.
District 2 President Kate Pepin emceed the event.Don Wesley, NNA’s lobbyist, assisted in the introduction of the officials and candidates. Nurses in attendance represented staff, educators, administrators, and advanced practice nurses.
The turnout for this event was outstanding – 90 nurses and 23 elected officials/candidates and their guests attended the event. Each of the officials and candidates in attendance were asked to briefly address the group. Officials and candidates in attendance included:

Judi Dunn MS, CPP, RN Midwest Multistate Division Nurse Peer
Review Leader
Over the last year and a half the Missouri Nurses Association and five other state nurses associations (SNAs) formed a collaborative, namely the Midwest Multistate Division (MW MSD), with the goal of promoting efficiencies and growth. State nurses associations participating in this collaborative include Iowa, Kansas, Michigan,Missouri, Nebraska, and North Dakota. Each SNA will retain its own state identity while utilizing shared resources within the MW MSD. As part of this collaborative, the Midwest Multistate Division Continuing Nursing Education Unit (MW MSD CNE Unit) was formed.
How does this impact Nebraska nurses? The NNA Approver Unit has now been transitioned into the new Midwest Multistate Division Accredited Approver Unit. Current Nebraska Continuing Education Approval Committee members are being shifted into the MW MSD reviewer pool and will be receiving training on important changes.
Approved Provider Applications (both initial and renewal) have been streamlined, staff resources expanded, policies and procedures updated. A new website created specifically for the new Midwest Multistate (MW MSD) Accredited Approver Unit provides a wealth of information for current Approved Provider Units as well as those contemplating applying.
WhatisGoingoninContinuingNursingEducation(CNE)?
Exciting for Nebraska Nurses is the easy access for submitting Individual Activity Applications for contact hours. This is an ANCC option for nurse associations, organizations, and individuals who would like to provide continuing nursing education contact hours for educational events they are planning.
Join us in celebrating the launch of the new MW MSD website! I encourage everyone interested in offering continuing nursing education to visit the new Midwest Multistate Division website at www.midwestnurses.org. There are updated forms, applications, educational resources and much more is planned to come!
As the Midwest Multistate Division Nurse Peer Reviewer Leader I am here to help in any way I can. Please contact me at [email protected] Dunn
