The group does not accept advertising orsponsorship and is only open to physicians and their spouses. Theonline community has over 13,000 members from all over Canadaand is growing daily. CME SESSION 2: Thrive! Resilience & StressMastery for Physicians

Have you ever compared a life in Medicine to that of a high-performance athlete?   Both need to bring excellence under pressure and overcome challenges with ease. For you though, the stakes are high and the outcome critical; this is not about agame or a medal.  Olympians and pros know that there’s a difference between a well-trained athlete and a champion. Thosewho succeed are trained in the skills and strategies of thriving in a high stress environment. They are also supported bypeople who know how to help them to help them bring their best. They are highly skilled at managing their ‘inner game’.  Howwell do you “do stress”? Do you have the skills, strategies, attitudes and mindset that will help you rise to the challenges andperform at your best no matter what life puts in front of you?  While a life in medicine can be incredibly meaningful andpersonally fulfilling, it is also demanding with many inherent and unique stresses and challenges for both doctors and theirfamilies. What each of us leans into for strength in tough times is individual and personal. Knowing how to work with stress;and be empowered by it, can be the difference between struggling or thriving. High performers know that the ability topersevere, adapt and recover quickly from adversity without being overwhelmed, is a key to facing challenges. Fortunately, this resilience is not a trait; it is a set of attitudes and behaviours that can be learned, practiced and mastered.

also use some strategies that backfire or get in your way. Grounded in neuroscience, adult development and psychology, thispractical and engaging workshop will introduce current thinking about stress mastery and offer tools that will help you activelymanage both the everyday hassles and the big challenges.  Through mini didactics, experiential exercises and reflectionsdesigned to deepen self-awareness and connect you with your values and strengths, you will leverage and learn practicaltools and strategies that will support you to thrive personally and professionally; not just daily but during times of stress andchange. The “toolbox” you create will also be a wealth of knowledge to share with your families and patients. Led by physician/UBC certified organizational coach Dr Elizabeth Froese, this is an opportunity to explore both academic and personalperspectives of stress and connect with peers through conversation, story-telling and fun.

degrees in Kinesiology which included working with elite athletes, planning to continue my careeras a researcher in Sports Medicine.  After graduating, I found my place instead as an ER doc andGP locum - a little surprised by how much I loved the clinical practice, the patients and especiallybeing part of the medical community.  Life was good.  Only a few years into practice, everythingchanged when I was seriously injured in an MVA. There were many, many challenges andobstacles in the years that followed as I slowly recovered my injured body and brain and tried tomake sense of the turn my life had taken. I was never able to return to clinical medicine.  I oftenfelt disconnected, isolated and aimless. The biggest challenge was bringing together myexperience, education and strengths and create a new way to live and work that was meaningfulfor me.  I explored a broad variety of formal and informal learning opportunities and experiencesand many kinds of work, trying to find the way forward.  Through these years I watched from thesidelines as my physician friends and colleagues struggled with tremendous personal, system and

When I discovered ‘coaching’- a forward looking helping model with a strong theoretical grounding anddevelopment focus, it seemed it would  be a great fit for docs.  In 2016, I completed the UBC OrganizationalCoaching Certificate.  With Physician Wellbeing as my primary area of interest, I develop and facilitate educationalprograms and workshops using a coach approach.  The interactive, personal and fun learning experiences aregrounded in adult development and learning theories, cognitive and behavioural sciences, positive psychology andneuroscience. All programs are designed for creating connection through conversation and story-telling, deepeningself-awareness and knowledge, and for leveraging and learning skills, attitudes and strategies.   In addition, I offercoaching for individuals and teams, and am part of the instructional team for the UBC Coaching Certificate Program. As a coach, I have found a way to contribute my strengths: curiosity, creativity, appreciation of excellence, and loveof learning; with my commitment to Medicine and to you – my colleagues.   I invite you to join me as I continue totravel on the bumpy road to discovering inner wisdom, connecting with what’s deeply meaningful, and growingtowards resilience and wellbeing.

organizational challenges and change. I became involved with a group of doctors advocating for grassroots physicianwellness initiatives.  I had found a new purpose in Physician Wellbeing.
