Probus-Gui ldwood
Our Strength is Fellowship, Our Success is Participation.
ISSUE #52 NEWSLETTER May 2016
Probus-Guildwood Meetings are held the 2nd Wednesday of the Month, 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Guildwood Community Presbyterian Church,
140 Guildwood Parkway, Guildwood Village – Everyone is most welcome.
President’s Message
Finally, I can see evidence
of Spring. The robins have
returned and the trees are
budding profusely. But the
real testament is the
resurgence of the yellow-
capped dandelions
upstaging the daffodils and
tulips. Many of us are
enthusiastically cleaning up our gardens,
delighted to be outside in the sunshine and fresh
air. The cycle of life seems assured.
Each day is a gift, as are those whose lives
encircle us. Respectfully we pay tribute to our
mothers on Sunday, May 8. Sadly some have
passed or are ill; however, there remain
beautiful memories of these personal heroines.
Traditionally we also celebrate the reign of
Queen Victoria as a Canadian holiday on
May 23. Queen Elizabeth has surpassed
Victoria’s sovereignty with her 63 years of
remarkable service. She recently turned 90 on
April 23.
Sincerely, Wendy
Executive Update At our April 27 executive meeting, Alan Burt
was nominated and appointed Vice President of
our Probus-Guildwood club. Alan will continue
his role as Membership Chair. He has recently
completed the Probus-Guildwood Members
Registry with photos, contact information and
interests of most members. Sincere thanks to all
who participated, particularly Barry Scheffer,
who took most of the professional portraits.
Looking forward, we invite you, our members,
to share your time and talents by joining our
executive or a committee. Serving on both the
executive and committee level, I’ve met many
remarkable and generous people in our club.
Currently we are searching for volunteers to
Chair the Activities, Speakers Committees and
as Treasurer. Our executive meets two weeks
after each Wednesday general meeting.
Committee members volunteer on an ‘as-needs’
basis. Please approach any executive member to
express your interest.

joined this wonderful organization – please
provide update your current
address/information to the membership
people at the table each monthly meeting or
email Alan at: [email protected].
To reduce printing costs, please advise us if you
have an email address so that we can email the
newsletter (and you’ll receive it in colour, too).
Help keep us informed about members who are
ill, hospitalized or have had bereavement so that
Karen can send cards. Karen – 416 283-5079 by

Members concentrating on Judy Mak’s presentation
The Toronto Public Library (TPL).
April 13 we heard from Judy Mak, Branch Head
of the Cliffcrest Library. She provided a short
but very informative PowerPoint presentation
followed by a Q and A session. Judy also
brought many TPL resources for distribution.
Currently there are 100 Toronto libraries, the
newest one adjacent to the Scarborough Civic
Centre. Many members were surprised that you
can book an hour appointment with your
librarian to assist you with the latest technology.
Most libraries provide computers, space and
WiFi access for residents. There are lending
libraries for musical instruments and tools and
even a site for 3D printing. For a modest fee a
patron can print their own book via Asquith.
Check the TPL website and review video
tutorials on Youtube.
Our Scarborough district libraries facilitate book
clubs, tea and movie sessions, children’s
programs, book launches, public education,
memoir writing programs and rotating art
shows. In addition they are excellent
distribution centres of pamphlets and booklets
about Toronto events, local newspapers and
limited but free passes to museums and the
AGO. Following Judy’s presentation we
provided a gift to the TPL Foundation via the
Guildwood library.

The following trip information was sent in by
Lee MacLeod, President of
Scarborough Horticultural.
Here is an article I have written
about Scarborough Garden and
Hort’s day trip to the Port Hope
area. We are using Parkinson’s
Bus Line and our tour guide is
Peter Brotherhood who knows
everything about the history of
this unique area in Ontario.
Three Unique Gardens – Port Hope
Bus Trip – June 28, 2016
Come along on a scenic and restful tour of three
unique gardens in the Port Hope area. For a flat
fee of $95 we will visit three very different
gardens and a local nursery.
Just sit back and read the
descriptions. You will
want to pay up immediately
(or at the next meeting).
Our bus leaves the
Scarborough Recreation
Centre at 8:30 a.m.
The first garden is a city
garden with a reproduction Ontario cottage. It
has a dry brook and a huge garden front and
back making this an example of a small space
used to the fullest.
The second garden just outside of Port Hope
was a working farm in the past with a heritage
style farm house. This year they are opening
their house for us, now an antique store. They
have a four-square formal garden with many
other flower beds around the house and garden
sheds.
Then we come back to Port Hope to lunch at the
Carlyle Inn, another historic building, originally
a bank. The menu is already planned – either a
hot chicken salad or quiche with salad and
carrot cake for dessert plus tea or coffee.
Then it’s off to our third and final garden
outside the city in Garden Hill which is where
the photograph was taken. There are sunken
gardens, fields of exotic grasses, hills, valleys,
bridges, and a natural stream where you can

relax and absorb nature at its finest. You will
easily want to spend two hours here and that’s
why we left it to the last. If you want to wander,
sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Or, you
can sit at the back of the house in a shade
garden and have a delightful rest. The view is
tranquil and green.
On the way back we visit Rekkers Nursery on
old Highway #2, where you can purchase plants
and stow them in the luggage compartment of
the bus until we reach Scarborough. We will
arrive at the Scarborough Village Recreation
Centre at around 5:00 p.m.
Payment is due at the next meeting, May 11 (if
possible). I would like to have a firm count of
paying members and their guests. Final
payment could come at the June 15 meeting but
sooner is better. All participants will sign an
insurance waiver before boarding the bus.
Remember that for $95 you will have a
wonderful day in the country. Contact me at:

Highway of Heroes – Honoring Our
Fallen
Along Highway 401 from CFB Trenton to the
Coroner’s office in Toronto a large scale
planting of 117,000 trees has been proposed by
the Ontario Horticultural Organization. “A Tree
for Every Hero” will tell the story of our
veterans. The project – Highway of Heroes – is
a meaningful way to honour our Canadian
veterans who have made such a vital
contribution to our way of life in Canada.
You are invited to contribute to the planting of
117,000 trees along this bleak corridor. Such a
large scale tree planting and a series of elements
along the roadway will remind those who pass
by of the great debt we owe to these courageous
Canadians.
The Ontario Horticultural Society and its 282
member societies are the umbrella organization
raising funds for the tree planting. The
administrative costs have been covered by a
private donor.
We are inviting everyone in our community to
participate. Your donations – your loonies and
your toonies – will make a meaningful
contribution to this cause. The OHA Board of
Directors approved this project and agreed to
match donations up to a maximum of $2,500.
All money raised goes directly to tree planting.
Donations may also be made privately by
sending a cheque directly to the OHA treasurer.
For donations of $50 or more, a tax receipt will
be issued. Please see me for the donation form.

Probus April Luncheon at
Borsalino Dining Lounge
The Probus luncheon on Friday April 29, 2016
was well attended again although the attendance
of men dropped by 50% from the previous
month. As you are able to see from the photo
the meals were rather large and they were
served pretty fast although we had only one
waiter. Join us at our next luncheon at Cora’s.
This is an excellent way of getting to know your
fellow Probus members better in an atmosphere
of fun and you do not have to run back to the
‘workplace’. Eric
