“SeavenTeares”takesitsnamefromafamouspiecebyJohnDowland,therenownedEnglishcomposer.DowlandlivedandworkedinEnglandaroundthetimeofQueenElizabeth,beforeEnglishspellingwasstandardised.“SeavenTeares”isthustheoldspellingof“SevenTears”.DowlandandtheothercomposersweplaytodaywroteagreatdealofbeautifulandsophisticatedmusicforviolconsortwhichsoundsveryfreshtoourearseventhoughsomeworksarequiteancientintermsofWesternmusic.Inthisprogramweliterallytakeatourthroughseveralcenturiesofmusicforviolconsortfromthe1500sto2012.Thelatterisrepresentedby,Times Past,composedbyPaulCutlan.PaulwilljoinustoimprovisethebassclarinetpartinhisworkwhichwesuspectmightbeanAustralianfirstcombinationofinstruments!Theviolconsorthaditshighpointduringtherenaissanceandtheearlybaroqueandisquitedistinctininstrumentaltoneand
repertoirecomparedtoitmostobviouscomparator,theclassical-erastringquartet.Ourinstrumentsarebynaturemoresoftlyspokenandmoregiventocontrapuntalmusicthantheviolinfamily.Inaddition,theviolshavesixorsevensheepgutstringsandofcoursewebow“underarm”.Thevarietyofmusicwepresentinthisconcertwillenabletheaudiencetogetasenseoftheconsort’swideexpressiverange.Inaddition,wehavealsotranscribedseveralworksforconsortincludingpiecesbyMaraisandthegreatoperaandballetcomposer,Lully,whowasMarais’employeratthecourtofLouisXIV.WearethankfultoChristopherKeaneforarrangingthelovely20thcenturysong“Hewasbeautiful”,madefamousbyCleoLaine,forourensemble.AswithPaulCutlan’s“TimesPast”,wethinkitfitsverywellonviolsbutletusknowwhatyouthinkaftertheconcert!

JenniferEriksson completedherinitialmusicalstudiesattheNSWStateConservatoriumofMusicstudyingmusiceducationandcellowithBarbaraWoolley.ShesubsequentlystudiedthevioladagambawithJaapterLindenattheRotterdamConservatoriumforthreeyearswhereshecompletedpost-graduatestudiesinbaroquemusic.ShefoundedTheMaraisProjectin2000andalsodirectstheMusicaVivainSchoolsensemble,SoundsBaroque.JenniferiswidelyrecognisedasoneofAustralia’sbestknownandmostversatilevioladagambists.
ImogenGranwalgainedaDiplomaandPostGraduateDiplomaofMusic(PerformanceCello)fromtheSydneyConservatoriumofMusicstudyingwiththelateLoisSimpson.HerinterestinvioladagambawasawakenedmanyyearsagoandsheisdelightedtobeperformingontheinstrumentwithanumberofensemblesincludingTheMaraisProjectandSeavenTeares.ShehashadlessonswithJennyErikssonandDannyYeadonandiscurrentlycompletingapostgraduatedegreeonthevioladagambaatSydneyConservatorium.
ShaunNgmovedfromSingaporetoEuropein1999tostudyinstrumentalperformance(violinandvioladagamba)withseveraloftheleadingpractitionersofearlymusic.In2000,ShaunfoundedtheearlymusicensembleMusicaObscura(Singapore),whichhedirecteduntilthegroupdisbandedin2004whenhemovedtoPerth,WesternAustralia.In2010,ShaunwonanAustralianPostgraduateAwardtopursuehisDoctorofMusicalArtsdegreeattheSydneyConservatoriumofMusic.Skilledonanumberofinstruments,heperformsregularlywithTheMaraisProjectandmanyotherensembles.
CatherineUpexcompletedherBachelorofMusic(Honours)atSydneyUniversityin1997,performingtheSaint-Saëns‘celloconcertowiththeSydneyUniversityOrchestra.ShehasperformedwithTheRenaissancePlayers,theConservatoriumBaroqueOrchestra,Salút,theSydneyConsort,Lautetia,LaFolia,theOperaProject,JosieandtheEmeraldsandZarabanda.CatherineisafoundermemberofTheMaraisProjectandappearsonallthreeMaraisProjectCDs.
SusieBishoptrainedasanactressattheUniversityofWollongongwhereshefellinlovewithoperatictechniqueasatooltoimprovehervoicesoastosinganystylehealthily.ShecontinuedhervocalstudiesinOperawithaMastersattheRoyalNorthernCollegeofMusic.Susieisactiveasasoloclassicalrecitalist,choirsinger,folkartistandisamemberoftheWorldMusic/jazzband,Chaika.
AliceChance iscurrentlyenrolledasacompositionstudentatSydneyConservatorium.ShecompletedherHSCatMLCBurwoodin2011,herstudiesincludingcompositionandperformance.InMarch2012AlicewasthefirstevervioladagambisttoappearattheHSCEncoreProgramattheSydneyOperaHousewheresheplayedherowncomposition.AlicestudiesvioladagambawithJenniferEriksson.
PaulCutlanisoneofAustralia’sbestknownhornplayersandisequallyathomeonclarinet,bassclarinetandsaxophones.OriginallytrainedatTasmanianConservatoriumofmusicinclassicalclarinetandcomposition,PaulworkswithleadingensemblesandartistssuchasMara!,TenPartInvention,JamesMorrison,JudyBailey,SteveHunters’NineLives,CraigScottQuintet,ClarionFractureZoneandWanderlust.HeiscurrentlycompletingaMasterofCompositiondegreeatSydneyConservatorium.Thisisthefirsttimehehascomposedfor,andperformedwith,viols.
