The GAITWAY Program

Horse + Brain Building = GaitWay Program
Riders gain outcome initially from riding the horse Trunk and head elevate Head up enlarges the visual field Begin to ldquofeelrdquo left and right sides of the body Begin to integrate L and R to develop ldquoCorerdquo Carry these improvements off the horse for improved balance gait self confidence BUT many of our riders plateau after this initial outcome and donrsquot seem to progress or progress very slowly Thus the GaitWay to the Brain program was developed
NEUROPLASTICITY We can change any brain by buildingre-building neural pathways so that we change wiring in the brain NEUROGENESIS We can change any brain regardless of age or diagnosis using new brain cells

Sensation is the first stage in the chain of neurologic events that begins with the impinging of a stimulus upon a sensory organ which then leads tohelliphelliphellip
Perception is the process of acquiring interpreting selecting and organizing sensory information
Sohellipfirst we are (visually) aware that ldquosomethingrdquo is there (sensation) then we figure out ldquoitrsquos a tigerrdquo (processing) Then our brain says RUNNNN (action)
Auditory We are not talking about ldquoacuityrdquo which is how well we hear We are talking about how the brain ldquousesrdquo the information that comes in along the hearing pathway

The pathways we use to ldquoreceiverdquo information
bull Vestibular Our movement detection system it works to let us know where we are in space and it provides a stable base for using our eyes
bull Tactile Runs from the top of our heads to the bottom of our feet It registers types of touch temperature taste and smell

StoreOrganize Information Sequential Processing This is the number of ldquopiecesrdquo of information we are able to retain and rememberhellip ANDhellipit is a function of developmental age
This means a 1 year old has a sequencing span of ldquo1rdquo
a 2 year old has a sequencing span of ldquo2rdquo
a 3 yo=ldquo3rdquo a 4 yo=ldquo4rdquo etc up to ldquo7rdquo which is considered within normal limits regardless of age
Think about this A 2 yr old (or any brain that has a sequencing level of ldquo2rdquo) processes ldquowantrdquo and ldquodonrsquot wantrdquo OR ldquonowrdquo and ldquoneverrdquohellipthus the ldquoterrible twosrdquo or rather you get the behavior of tantrums When you move the brain to processing ldquo3rdquo items of information instead of only ldquo2rdquo that brain can now process ldquonowrdquo ldquoneverrdquo ldquolaterrdquo and you move away from the behavior of tantrums
