• The very first known space selfie was captured by the astronaut Buzz Aldrin in 1966.
• At that time term selfie was not famous so it was named as astronaut or rover selfies.

Popularity of the term SELFIE.. • The term "selfie" was discussed by photographer Jim Krause in 2005.
• According to writer Kate Losse , improvements in design—especially the front-facing camera of the iPhone 4 (2010), mobile photo apps such as Instagram and Snapchat led to the resurgence of selfies in the early 2010s.
• By the end of 2012, Time magazine considered selfie one of the "top 10 buzzwords" of that year.
• In the year 2013, the word selfie was included in the Oxford English Dictionary and the frequency of use of the word increased by 17,000 % over the year.
• In November 2013, the word "selfie" was announced as being the "word of the year" by the Oxford English Dictionary .

• To understand the psychological aspect of selfie a survey of 100 youngsters was done by me.
• The age group was from 16-30 yrs. • On the basis of survey and some other experts view,
we can get conclusions which are good, bad and worse too.
• Let us have a look at the conclusions.

Yes, selfies do satisfy people because they can1) Take a selfie in mere moments and2) Share them with thousands of people online at
any time. Thus, its empowering from people’s point of view.

Selfie boosts self esteem..
There’s just so many forces trying to make people (and women especially) feel bad about how they look, and this is really good that selfies have become such a huge phenomenon.

Self obsession • Obsession is an idea or
thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.
• In more simple terms we can say passion, enthusiasm, mania.
• Social media is a part of our daily lives, there have been more notable cases of selfie obsession gone wrong.

Narcissism• Narcissism : Excessive or erotic interest in
oneself and one's physical appearance.
• The term ‘narcissist’ originates from the Greek mythological figure Narcissus who famously fell in love with his own reflection.
• Narcissistic injury or narcissistic scar was first defined by renowned psychologist Sigmund Freud in the 1920s.

A new scientific way to measure narcissism is N = S/h i.e, Selfie per hour.
It has been proven by multiple studies that interacting with other types of social media is definitively linked to Narcissism, Depression, Low self esteem, Addiction and a host of other negative effect.

Some disorders..2014 : American Psychiatric Association -The act of taking selfie can be
considered a mental disorder -The disorder has been labeled SELFITIS -Defined as an obsessive compulsive
desire (OCD) to take photos of oneself and publish it onto social media, like Instagram, Whatsapp, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and others.

Classification of Selfies(APA 2014)
Borderline : Take photos 3 times a day but don’t necessarily post them on social media
Acute : Taking photos of oneself atleast 3 times a day and posting it on social media
Chronic : “Uncontrollable urge” to take n number of photos of oneself in a day and posting them onto social media at least 6 times a day

• A psychologist from The Priory, London, said that taking a lots of selfies is not an addiction, but a symptom of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD)
• Selfie fans with BDD can spend hours trying to take pictures that do not show any defects or flaws in their appearance, which they are very aware of but which might be unnoticeable to others.

Cure and treatment..• Try limiting your sharing-at least for a bit.
• Instead of immediately posting, keep them on your phone to look at later, or just send them to a best friend or significant other.
• Cognitive behavioural therapy is used to help patients moderate their behaviour.
• At the moment there is no cure for the disorder, but apparently Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be considered as temporary treatment.

Marketing and branding• The main reason to encourage selfie by the
organizations as they know it is the easiest way to connect with people moreover youngsters.
• Selfie contests or selfie campaigns are one way of branding products, services and organizations.
• Famous way of branding products is encouraging followers to send their selfies taken with the product in, driving engagement and traffic to the brand site.

Selfies for social cause.. • Selfies are also being
encouraged for social cause so that youngsters can be part of it.
• Because of that funds can also be raised for the patients.
• By doing such campaigns the World gets oppurtunity to unite and show their empathetic side.
