¿QUÉ HORA ES?What time is it?
DLT: I can tell time in Spanish.
¿QUÉ HORA ES? To give the time, it is important to begin with the
following:
Es la (with 1:00)
Son las (with all other hours)
Both mean “It is” but Es la is referring to only 1 hour while Son las is referring to multiple hours.
You can also say A la or A las to say At… (for a specific time). However, Es la and Son las are used for giving the time.
WHAT DOES “ES LA” MEAN?A. It is (with 1:00)B. It is (with all hours except 1:00)C. It is (with all hours, no exceptions)

*Notice that uno changes to una when telling time.

¿QUÉ HORA ES? When there are minutes:
Minutes are added from 0:01 minutes after to 0:29 minutes.
You add minutes by saying “y” and the number of minutes. 1:15

HOW WOULD YOU SAY “IT IS 2:25”A. Son las dos y veinticinco.B. Son las tres y veinticinco.C. Son las dos y cinco.
HOW WOULD YOU SAY “IT IS 1:10”A. Es la una y cinco.B. Es la una y diez.C. Son las una y diez.
HOW WOULD YOU SAY “IT IS 4:17”A. Son las cuatro y cuarto.B. Son las cuatro y dieciocho.C. Son las cuatro y diecisiete.

At 30 minutes after the hour, you say “y media” 1:30
Es la una y media. 2:30
Son las dos y media.
HOW WOULD YOU SAY “IT IS 7:30”A. Son las seis y media.B. Son las siete y media.C. Son las siete y treinta.
¿QUÉ HORA ES? When there are minutes:
After 30 minutes (0:31 to 0:59), there are two ways you can give the minutes.
The minutes can still be added to the current hour: 1:40
Es la una y cuarenta. 2:45
Son las dos y quince cuarenta y cinco.
OR the minutes are subtracted from the next hour. 1:40
Son las dos menos veinte. 2:45
Son las tres menos quince.

HOW WOULD YOU SAY “IT IS 2:35”A. Son las dos y veinticinco.B. Son las tres y veinticinco.C. Son las tres menos veinticinco.

¿QUÉ HORA ES? You may also see:
“y cuarto” or “menos cuarto” instead of “y quince” or “menos quince” when referring to 15 minutes after the hour or 15 minutes before the hour.
“Cuarto” means a quarter. Just like in English, we often say “15 minutes after” or “a quarter after” Y cuarto- a quarter after Menos cuarto- a quarter till
