1. Start off on a good foot.2. Treat the legislative staff with respect.
3. Never lie or make up information.
4. Be sure to give the legislator the folderwith all of the relative information in it.(pick up at registration)
5. Put your issue in the context of the legislators own district.
6. Go into the meeting assuming the legislator will support yourissue.
7. Use strong language when describing your feelings or efforts.
8. Allow the legislator a chance to respond, listen carefully totheir advice and dont interrupt.
9. Be understanding of the complex pressure upon legislators.
10. Never criticize another legislator, lobbyist or the opposition.
11. Dont burn bridges!
12. Send a written follow-up note.

youth to stop at the Great Hall
and write a thank-you note to the
legislator
o Fill out both the Legislator Meeting Evaluationand event evaluation form and turn those in atthe Great Hall
o If the legislator had any questions that you couldnot answer, be sure to include that info on theevaluation.
