Provide balanced instruction Have kids that do a lot of reading and writing Science and social studies are integrated with reading and writing MEANING is central; higher level thinking
Difference between assessing comprehension and teaching/supporting comprehension
Skills are taught and kids are coached in how to use them Variety of teaching formats Variety of materials Well-managed classrooms with engaged kids
TEACHER KNOWLEDGE ABOUT READING INSTRUCTION MATTERS.
Read aloud: Fireboat
Today Read Chapter 2: Creating Enthusiastic, Independent Readers Vision for our readers:
Readers who can read independently: fluently and with comprehension. Readers who can write and talk about what they read.
Readers who can read fairly quickly and accurately, freeing up cognitive energy to concentrate on the meaning of the text, ultimately talking and writing about the text.
Groups: We know that the amount of reading kids do is highly correlated with how
well they read. This chapter discusses two reading formats: read aloud and independent reading. So, how do you go about making sure that kids spent a lot of time actually engaged in reading and writing?
How much should they read independently? What is the big deal about conferencing with kids about their reading? What about rewarding kids for reading (see box on page 24)? What was really important in this chapter? What stuck out to you? What are your favorite strategies or activities?
