The goal of Reading Recovery
• To bring a child’s reading and writing to an average level
• Child will have tools to use to problem solve in reading and writing
• Child takes risks in reading and writing• Child continues to grow after Reading
Recovery
What is Reading Recovery?
• Began in New Zealand in the 70’s
• For children confused about literacy
• A maximum of 20 weeks in duration
• One on one with highly trained teacher
• An accelerative program
• Daily 30 minute lessons
What happens in a 30 minute lesson?
• Child reads about 5-6 books each day
• Child writes a story every day
• Child learns how words work
• Child learns to problem solve while reading and writing with teacher help

Child’s Role
• Good attendance in school
• Complete homework
• Bring Reading Recovery bag home each night and return to school
Parent’s Role
• Help child with homework
• Communicate with teachers
• Observe Reading Recovery lesson(s)
• Encourage and praise child’s efforts
Classroom Teacher’s Role
• Regularly meet with Reading Recovery teacher
• Daily reading group with child
• Share observations with parent and RR teacher
Reading Recovery Teacher Role
• Plan daily lessons for child
• Share information with parent and classroom teacher
• Help child to love reading and writing
