Words to know:Axis - imaginary line around which
Earth spins, causing day and night, and that is drawn from the
north geographic pole through
Earth to the south geographic pole

Why is our Earth tilted?
![Page 10: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
As the Earth moves around the Sun, this axis always points in
the same direction.
![Page 11: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
This means that, during part of the year, the northern part of
the Earth will lean more directly to the sun, and during
other parts of the year the southern part of the Earth will.

The Earth during one full year as you would see it
if you looked straight at it
from the Sun.

The part of the Earth that is
directly facing the
sun changes with the time of the year.
![Page 14: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The northern half faces the sun for a
part of the year, then the sun’s path moves south of the
equator, only to move back to the north again as the
Earth’s orbit around the sun
continues …
![Page 15: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
When the northern hemisphere is leaning away from the sun, the rays coming from
it hit this part of the Earth at a smaller angle than on other parts of the world.
![Page 16: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
This means that the same amount of light is distributed over a larger
surface, and so these places receive less heat than the others.
![Page 17: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The southern hemisphere is experiencing Summer, the northern
hemisphere has Winter.
![Page 18: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
In half a year, the situation reverses, and it is now Winter in the southern
hemisphere since that part of the earth is now leaning away from the sun.
![Page 19: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Why does tilt matter? It causes some places to receive direct sunlight energy...while other places receive indirect sunlight energy. That's why.

The energy that hits the Earth by the Sun changes over of the year.
The angle the Sun is above the horizon determines how much heat and light strike each
square meter of ground.

![Page 23: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
In the winter the Sun's energy is weakened because the Sun's rays strike the ground
indirectly as compared to the summer months when the Sun's rays strike the ground more
directly.
http://inkido.indiana.edu/a100/celestialsphere5.html
![Page 24: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
This means that the ground receives more energy (more heat) per square
meter in the summer than in the winter.
More energy is received by the ground during the summer (high
temperatures) and less energy during the winter (lower temperatures).
http://inkido.indiana.edu/a100/celestialsphere5.html
![Page 25: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Okay, so we know about Winter and Summer….but….. What about spring and autumn?
At these times of the year, the tilt of the Earth doesn’t make much difference in the amount of sunlight reaching the ground, so we have spring and autumn.
![Page 26: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
So, seasons are caused the So, seasons are caused the tilt of the Earth’s axistilt of the Earth’s axis
![Page 27: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Remember:
• The seasons are the result of this tilt of the Earth's axis.
• If the tilt of the Earth's axis was 0° there would be no difference in how the rays from the sun hit its different regions, and there would be no seasons.
![Page 28: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
The Earth's seasons are not caused by the differences in the
distance from the Sun throughout the year.
![Page 29: Reason for the Seasons!. Seasons A regular change in temperature that repeats itself every year due to the revolution of Earth around the sun and the](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062409/5697c0031a28abf838cc3edf/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
The seasons are the result of The seasons are the result of the tilt of the Earth's axis.the tilt of the Earth's axis.
I know this is a repeat, but it is important that you understand this idea. Many
Americans, including Harvard graduates, do not know what causes seasons!

So why is this all important in understanding weather?
•Differences in temperature across the globe create winds!! •Winds then create fronts•Fronts give us our daily weather.
