Preface

Recent advances in nanomagnetism and spintronics

In recent decades there is a considerable interest in researchand development in the field of nanoscale magnetism, which isone of the most prospective fields in the today's science andground for the new branches of high-tech industry. The intensiveinvestigations in this field promoted considerable progress intechnological applications of magnetism in various areas such asinformation technology, magnetosensors, electronics, data storage, magnetic read heads of computer hard disks, single electrondevices, microwave electronic devices, etc. Nanoscale magneticmaterials are already found applications as sensors of low mag-netic field, computer hard disk read heads, magnetoresistive RAMchips, advanced filters for telecommunications. Last investigationsbrought to a new progressive field of spintronic devices that utilizenot only the electrical charge but also a spin of electrons andoptical spin manipulation. Even new terminologies, for examplemagnetoelectronics, spintronics, spin valve etc., have recently beenintroduced to refer to aspects of the field involving magneticphenomena in nanoscale.

This volume contains a collection of papers that were pre-sented at the International Conference on Nanoscale Magnetism(ICNM-2013) held in Istanbul, Turkey (September 2–6, 2013), andis intended to provide an updated review on the mentioned field. The contributions have concentrated on magnetic properties ofnanoscale magnetic materials, especially, on fabrication, charac-terization, physics behind the unique properties of these struc-tures and device design.

We would like to thank all the authors for their contributions. Weshould also acknowledge the great efforts of our collaborators andresearch fellows from the Department of Physics and Nanomagnet-ism and Spintronics Research Center of Gebze Institute of Technologyand others who made major contributions to the organization of theICNM-2013 Conference and made this publication possible.
