Greetings,Everyone!
Ihopeyouallhadawonderfulsummer.IrecentlyreturnedfromamonthinDenmarkandIcelandandameagertoembarkonmysecondseasonasyourmusicdirector.ThiswillalsobethesecondseasonthatmeetingsstartupinSeptember.InordertoavoidLaborDayweekendandtheweekendofNancyGorbman'suniqueKyuquotworkshopweagreedtostartonthethirdFridayofthemonthwhichisabitunusual,soIhopetoseeyouallthereonthe16th.
ThewarmthandhospitalityoftheIcelandicpeoplealongwith
lingeringsunsetsat11:30pmmadealastingimpression.IamfilledwithfondmemoriesandinfluencesfromthenorthernclimesandhaveplannedaneveningofbeautifulScandinavianmusicbyJeanSibeliusandEdvardGriegforourSeptemberplayingsession.Iwillbeleadingtheentiregroupandhavechosenmusicthatwillworkwellforalllevels.TherewillnotbeaBackroomGang,butMiyoAokiwillbeonstandbytobuddyupifanyoneneedsextrasupport.

WewillstartwithSibelius'magnificentAndanteFestivo,originallyscoredforstringquartetin1922,thenlaterrescoredforstringorchestraandtimpaniin1938.IheardarecordingofAndanteFestivoonKingFMwhiledrivingtoPortlandlastspringandinstantlyfellinlovewithitandenvisioneditworkingwellforrecorderensemble.IimmediatelycalledCharlestoexpressmyenthusiasmand,loandbehold,withinaweekhemadethebeautifularrangementthatwewillplay!Thankyou,Charles!
ThenwewillplayGrieg's“Våren,”(“LastSpring”)ahauntinglybeautifulpieceoriginallyforvoiceandpianoinalovely6-parttranscriptionbyEricHaas.IrecentlyconnectedwiththeJapaneserecorderplayerandarrangerPapalin,whoseemstobeasmuchinlovewithGrieg'smusicasI,sowewillplaysomeofhistran-scriptionsfromthefabulousOpus17.

Withgreatsadness,wesharethenewsofDavidMaughan'spassingonSeptember2nd,justshyofhis76thbirthday.HehadbeeninthehospitalinKalispell,MontanasinceTuesday,August16th,aftersufferingaverysudden,rare,andunexpectedcomplicationfromamedicationhe'dbeentaking.TheSeattlerecordercommunitywasveryfortunatetohavehisgentle,enthusiasticpresence,hiseasysmile,andhispositiveattitude.Hewillbedeeplymissed.PleasejoinusattheSeptember16thmeetingtoplayapiecein hishonor.

Our4thannualHolbornePlayDateandPotluckinthelovelyyardandhomeofSkipperSkellywasaresoundingsuccess!Recorderenthusiastsbetweentheagesof12and85joinedinthisdelightfultraditionthatoriginatedinPortlandbutnowhasevolvedandmorphedintoourveryown.ThiswasourthirdyearinSkipper'syard,andwethankedherwithacardandgiftcertificatetoSwansonsNursery.
TheafternoonstartedwithLauraFaberleadingfolksinsomehand-pickedPolishdancesbyVladamirHaussmanthatintroducedsomeofthesamemusicalelementsasarefoundinHolborne'sdances.Thisyearthegoalwastogoconductorlessanditworkedsplendidlywithchairsarrangedinalargecircle.Wewereasmallergroupthaninpreviousyearswhichenabledusalltofitunderthetentandstaydryduringtheshortrainshowers,whichaddedarathercharmingpercussiveeffecttothe“choice”pavanes,almains,andgalliardesfromAnthonyHolborne's1599collection.
DearHolborneFestivalGoers,Ican'tthankyouenoughforyourthankyounotesandgenerousgiftcertificatetoSwansons.Thatwas
certainlyaboveandbeyondwhatwasexpected,becauseIjustlovehavingyoucomehereeveryyear.Itgivesmeareasontodressthingsupforthedayandappreciatewhatagoodspotthisisfora“playdate.”And,youareallsuchverynicepeople!IhopetoseeyouallagainnextAugust.

HananBellwelcomedtheassembledperformersandaudiencemembers.MollyWarnerreportedthataconcertdedicatedtoourlateSRSmemberLHotalingwasheldattherecentWindandWavesworkshop.Additionally,EllenMendozahadwrittenapoemmemorializingL,whichistobesenttoL'sfamilyandwillappearinnextmonth’sSRSnewsletter.HananthenturnedoverthemeetingtoMikeWoolfwhoemceedtheprogram. * * * * Forthefirstperformance,LauraFaberstrolledtothefrontplayingatuningnote,andselectpeopleseatedintheaudiencejoinedher.Then,withoutaword,Lauraandthoseaudiencemembersbeganperformingthetraditionalsong“DonaNobisPacem.”Afterperformingthetuneinunison,theyplayeditinthree-partcanon.Forthoseofusnotplaying,itwasauniqueandlovely“surround-sound”experience.
SusanBurris,SusieKeithly,andEllisHillinger,a.k.a.TheWoodlandConsort,cameuptoperformananony-mouspiecefromthe15thcentury,“BassadanzaReale.”Theyusedlargerecorders,givingafull,richsoundtothisimitativework.Theyalsogaveusafasterdanceintripletime,“LaGambainBassoeSoprano”byVincenzoRuffo(c.1508-1587),inwhichinterestingrhythmsinteractedwithoneanother.
ThenRichardGinnisbroughthissopranorecorderandhisguitaristfriendOscarKipersztoktothefronttoperform“VouVivendo,”a1946tunefromPixinguinhaandBeneditoLacerda.ThisrefreshingBrazilianchoralpieceisafavor-iteofCléaGalhano.Itfeaturesanumberofsections,eachwithadifferentcatchymelody.AndOscarplayedfrommemory!

TheSpringConsortcomprises
MichaelBancroft,DaveGloger,ChristineJerse,RebeccaOlson-Nord,KateRiley,KarenSoma,andWoodyWood.LauraFaberledtheminananonymousPolishdancewithaveryoldsound.TheywentontoplaytwoofSteveMarshall's“FourMiniaturesforRecorderQuartet”(2014).Thefirstonebeganwithlayeredentrancessoundinglikeafanfare;thesecondpiecehadasopranoplayingalovelymelodythroughout.
BelindaFrazier,CathyLacefield,
RuthPattison,andJillShupe,withtheircomradeNancyGorbmanunavailable,performedasYeOldeSpiceGirls(minusone).TheyplayedtheprimaandsecondaparsofPalestrina's(1525-1594)“Sicutcervus.”(IwassurprisedwhenGoogleTranslateinformedmethatitmeans“likeadeer.”)Thefirstmademethinkofbirdscallinginashadyglen;thesecondwasquickerandbrighter.Carefulattentiontointonationwasevident.
TheDoubleW's,NancyWright
(onviol)andCarolynWallace,playedthe“Preludio,Adagio”and“Allegroassai”fromSonataIIinCMajor,whichinturnisfromOpus13,Elpastorfido.ItseemsthatNicholasChédeville(1705-1782)wroteitunderthenameofAntonioVivaldi,hopingtogainmoresuccessthatway;andalthoughChédevilledidnotreceivethehoped-formonetarybenefits,thepiecewasindeedattributedtoVivaldifor250years!Thealtopartwaspoliteandagreeable,keepingtothelowerpartsofitsrange.

BassoNovaincludedBetsyDarrah,MajaEberhardt,NancyLewis,DavidMaughan,BarbaraMcKnight,RebeccaOlson-Nord,andIoneTurman,allonvariousbasses(requiringseatcushions)anddirectedbyLauraFaber.Cladinredandblack,theyperformed“Invitaciòn”and“LosTresGolpes”fromIgnacioCervantes'“21Danzascubanas”(1878-1895).Inthefirstpiece,sectionscharacterizedbyleapsinthemelodyalternatedwithsmoothersections;inthesecond,“ThreeBlows,”wittysyncopationsandchromaticismmadeforapiecewithlotsofcharacter.
KathyParkertookanextramomentortwotosetup,asshewaswranglingsixsizesofrecorders,aswellasalargetambourinesheplayedbytappingitwithherfoot.SheplayedIrishtunes,beginningwithaslowaironthebass,thensheddinghereyeglassesandgraduatinguptoatenortoperformafastwaltz.Shetookupanaltoandperformedalivelypolkaandhornpipe.Sopranowasassignedtwoquickjigsfeaturingmelodicleaps;onsopraninoweheardafast-movingreel.Kathyfinished,togreatacclaim,withasingablewaltzongarklein.(Herbravuraperformancefromlowtohighalsomadeafinetestofmypartner'shearingaids.)

treatedto“TrioKopfnuss,”whichSabineEndrigkeitexplainedcouldmean“aviolentblowtothehead,”or“abrain-teaser,”or...thispiece,composedbyAgnesDorwarthin1953forthreeheadjoints.Alto,tenor,andbassheadjointswerewielded—Imean,played—byMiyoAokiandVickiBoeckman,aswellasSabine.Thefascinatingsoundstheyproducedincludedclicks,flutter-tonguing,fortissimo,octavechangescreatedbyahandoveroneend,andlittleswoops.Itlastedexactlytherightlengthoftime,leavinguswantingmore.

Next,theRainCityPiperstookthefloor.JohnBumanglag,Chu-LanChiong,PaoladelSol,KathyGraunke,DavidMaughan,MikeWagenbach,andLindaWordemanwereconductedbyLauraFaberintwosongsbyThomasMorley(c.1558-1602).“See,MineOwnSweetJewel”and“Lady,ThoseEyes”bothfeaturedthoseimitationsatunpredictableintervalsthatrequiresuchcarefulcountingwhenperformingMorley!Thesecondalsohadmultiplevoiceschasingeachotherindownwardruns.

ThenMikeWoolfjoinedLauratoperformtwomovementsofG.F.
Telemann's(1681-1767)SonataNo.1,TWV40:101.TheAndantewasmostlyflowing,withafewshortgroupsofstaccatonotes.Theduetputalotofairthroughtheirinstruments,inkeepingwithAldoAbreu'scoachingsomemonthsago.TheSoavemovementwasintripletime,asthetwoaltostookturnsatthemelody.TheplayersexecutedtheirBaroqueornamentationsinsynchronywitheachother.
J illCarlsonandSabineEndrigkeitwereaccompaniedbyEllenSeibertonviolforTarquinioMerula'smercurial“LaCattarina”(1637).Thisexciting,imitativepiecehadnumeroussections,someofthemlyingquitehighontherecorders;andwheneverthemusicbecamemoredifficult,theplayersincreasedtheirtempo!
IsabellaPagel,VickiBoeckman,andLauraFabergaveusthedulcet
soundsofgemshorns(nowadaysmadeofcows'horns,asgemsareextinct).Theyplayedaslow“IroquoisHymn,”inwhichphraseswereclearlymarked;thebeautifultoneswereenhancedbyfaultlessintonation.Theythenplayed“Margotlabourezlesvignesbientost”(“Margo,comequicklyandplowthevineyards!”),acheerfultunewithsomeofthesameunpredictably-timedimitationastheearlierMorley,butherebyJeandeCastro(c.1540-1611).
F inallyweheardtheSweetSeptembers(CarolynLober,IsabellaPagel,&VickiBoeckman)playfromMatthiasMaute's(b.1963)ConcertopertreFlauti.ThebeginningATempoGiustohadwonderfuldissonancesandafewornamentsamongitsmostlylongnotes.TheAllegrostartedoutwithverybusyscale-wisepassages,whichsoonbecamealmostfranticones.Atonepointaslowmelodysatatopaverybusyduet.Itseemedalmosttobeaperpetualmotionpiece,anditsverysudden,unexpectedendingmadeusgiggle.
