Endangered Species Low Relief Clay Tile
Project Objective• Create a piece of work that informs the
public visually about the Endangered Species - animals or plants.
• Create a low relief clay tile using additive and subtractive building processes.
Endangered Species● A plant or animal species existing in such small
numbers that it is in danger of becoming extinct, especially such a species placed in jeopardy as a result of human activity. One of the principal factors in the endangerment or extinction of a species is the destruction or pollution of its native habitat. Other factors include overhunting, intentional extermination, and the accidental or intentional introduction of alien species that outcompete the native species for environmental resources.
PHASE 1: Research1. Choose and research Endangered
Species – it could be a plant or animala. complete Research Pages worksheet and print
images2. Choose animal or plant to use as subject of your
relief tilea. complete Planning Pages worksheet
3. Draw your final composition at actual size: minimum 6”, maximum 10”. a. draw 3 different possible compositionsb. drawing should fit on standard size sheet of
paperc. choose best composition to use for your final tile
design
Your Task
PHASE 2: Project Creation1. Roll a thick slab from terra cotta
cone 06 clay and transfer your drawing to it
2. Begin to carve and add clay as necessary to create a low relief design on the tile
3. Prior to the tile becoming bone dry, you may add some fine details with stains and subtle color in select areas
