MRS HOLT

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mrs Heidi Holt who has been our wonderful Administration Manager for the past 7 years will be finishing at New Lambton South Public School tomorrow to take on a role within the corporate sector of the Department of Education. Heidi will be sorely missed by the students, staff and community of NLSPS. She is extremely diligent, helpful and always has the children’s best interests at heart. We wish her the best of luck and we are truly saddened that she is leaving.

I hope you’ve all had a wonderful break and enjoyed the winter sunshine. Our students have returned looking refreshed and ready to learn and we’re looking forward to a very busy Term 3. So far this week we have already held NAIDOC celebrations and State Cross Country will be held this Friday. Good luck to our competitors! Welcome back everyone. BE SAFE, BE KIND AND DO YOUR BEST.

HYPERWEB SCHOOL APP Thank you to the more than 240 parents who have downloaded our new school app. It is a great way to keep in touch with the school, advise the school of your child’s absence, make a payment and receive reminders. Skoolbag has now been closed and you can free up space on your phone by deleting this app. ASSEMBLIES Whole school assemblies will not be held during Term 3. This is a trial only and was discussed at last P&C meeting. The school is trying to increase the time students spend in class. We will be holding celebration assemblies in Education Week Wednesday 8th August and Week 10 to showcase student achievements. OC SELECTIVE TEST If you have registered for your child to sit the OC selective test for 2019, please be reminded that this test is to be held Wednesday 1st August at Merewether High School. ICAS ENGLISH TEST The ICAS English test will be held in the library 8.30am Tuesday 31 July. All students are to meet outside the office by 8.20am.

ATTENDANCE Thank you to those parents who advise the school in a timely manner of their child’s absence. SMS DAILY ATTENDANCE NOTIFICATIONS This term we have introduced the SMS absentee notification system. Parents/carers will receive an SMS for their child if they have an unexplained absence for that day. This means that if the school does not receive a school absence notification via our new app, an email to the school or a phone call advising of their child’s absence, you will receive an SMS alert. Your child/ren’s safety is of paramount importance to us and we expect that in the event you receive an SMS alert, you will reply to this SMS promptly. As this SMS alert system is a follow up to monitor student absence, we hope that you continue to notify the school as a priority at the start of the day for any absence. EXTENDED LEAVE If you child is going to miss school for a period of four or more consecutive days, please request an Application for Extended Leave from the school office. It is important that you advise the school of any leave or holidays for your child. Thank you for your cooperation. ENROLMENTS FOR KINDER 2019 We are currently receiving many new enrolments for Kindergarten in 2019. It’s an exciting time for many families. If you have a child starting school next year, please contact the office to commence the enrolment process. Please be aware that due to departmental policy, we are unable to enrol any students who do not reside in our school intake area. BIRTHDAY TREATS Please remember that from the start of last term, birthday treats can not be sent in with your child’s birthday. Thank you!

HUNTER DANCE FESTIVAL Group 1— Stage 1—Monday 30 July 2018 Group 2—Stage 2— Thursday 2 August 2018 Thank you to our parents who have replied to the permission note that was sent out on CareMonkey. There are several students who we have not received permission from as yet, please see your email and respond as soon as possible. If you haven’t already done so, please make payment to the office this week. The children will continue their rehearsals daily at school this week. A further information note has gone out via CareMonkey this week. Please make sure you read this and if you have any further queries, please contact Ms Nicole Daniel in the office on 49571168. On both days, our performers will travel by bus from school for their full dress rehearsal. They will need to pack their costume and will get changed at school before leaving. They will return by bus before the end of the school day. For the evening performances, all students are to meet in the foyer at 5.30pm. We ask that students eat before they arrive or bring a light snack with them. Please bring a bottle of water. Please no soft drinks or juice as this can stain costumes. We also ask no wet foods such as yoghurts for the same reason. Please refer to CareMonkey for all detailed rehearsal, performance and cost information. EDUCATION WEEK 2018 We will be celebrating Education Week on Wednesday 8th August. There will be open classrooms, a showcase of student achievement and a morning tea. Everyone is welcome to just us for part of or all of the morning: 9.40am—Open Classrooms 10.30am—Celebration Assembly 11.20am—Morning Tea 12.15pm—Normal classes resume P&C MEETING Tuesday 31st July from 7.00pm—8.00pm. All welcome!

NAIDOC ASSEMBLY The theme for NAIDOC this year is "because of her, we can". On Tuesday, students participated in a variety of activities with a particular focus on weaving and learning about prominent or valued Aboriginal women from the past and present. A special assembly was held and each stage shared their work, the choir sang “My Island Home” so beautifully and certificates were awarded for excellence in Aboriginal education. The students and teachers all agreed that it was a beautiful way to start the term. Special thanks to Cherie Johnson (Gabbie and Tobias’ mum) for leading the whole school in cultural learning about the importance of weaving and it’s deep connection to country. We are so blessed to have you and are grateful for the time you give to our school. Special thanks to Mrs Drinkwater for organising all the craft activities and our Gema Simon, our teachers aide for sharing part of story with the school.

E-SAFETY NEWS KiK During the holidays I spent some time with a close friend and her eleven year old son. When I asked him if any of his friends used Facebook (he currently isn’t allowed) he replied “Facebook is boring and is only for old people.” After I ran to the mirror and checked for grey hairs (kidding!) it got me thinking. Facebook used to be a one-stop shop for all social-networking needs. While it may seem more complicated to post photos on Instagram, share casual moments on Snapchat, text on WhatsApp, and check your Twitter feed throughout the day, kids these days love the variety. The bottom line for most of these tools? If kids are using them respectfully, age appropriately, and with a little parental guidance, they're mostly fine. So take inventory of your kids' apps and review the best practices. One of these popular apps is Kik Messenger. Kik is an app-based alternative to standard texting as well as a social networking app for smartphones. It's fast and has no message limits, character limits, or fees if you only use the basic features. Because it's an app, the texts won't show up on your kid's phone's messaging service, and you're not charged for them (beyond standard data rates). With features like video, sketch, bot search, and friend or group code scanning, the app can be used by kids as young as 13 but should really only be used by older teens and adults since it's so easy to connect with strangers. There are no in-app ads or purchases, but the Kik Code function encourages users to use the app to connect themselves to commercial brands. Regardless of age recommendations and restrictions, the fact of the matter is, kids are using these applications. Common Sense Media recommends this application for ages 17+. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. It is an opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

This year's theme is "Because of her, we can". It's dedicated to all of the Indigenous women, grandmothers, mothers, aunties, sisters and cousins who have made a difference and inspired others.

On Tuesday the students and staff participated in activities inspired by the connection Indigenous people share with their land and the cultural importance of weaving.

By using the ‘Interwoven Aboriginal Education Kit (Cherie Johnston ‘Speaking In Colour’), students appreciated a number of hand woven baskets, bowls and animal sculptures. The use of natural fibres from plants and grasses created fish and bird traps that were part of everyday life for certain communities. To appreciate the processes involved in weaving the following techniques were attempted by students using natural fibres: Early Stage One - Hessian bracelet with beads, plastic needles and raffia thread.

Stage One - Cats Eyes using wool and paddle pop sticks.

Stage Two - Hand woven basket using paper template and wool.

Stage Three - Coil Bracelet made from raffia and blanket stitch. Our special NAIDOC week assembly was held in the hall with recognition given to Indigenous students and women from our community. These included people such as artist and teacher Cherie Johnson and Gema Simon (Australian International football player Newcastle Jets and the Australia women's national soccer team). The school choir sang ‘My Island Home’ and a number of students were recognised for ‘Excellence in Aboriginal Education’. The walls of the hall were decorated with artworks and weavings created in Visual Arts lessons (Stage Two) that were inspired by Indigenous art. Senior students also created a presentation centred around significant Indigenous women reinforcing this years theme ‘Because of Her, We Can! A big thank you to Cherie Johnston for her expertise and knowledge as well as the students that assisted other classes with weaving on the day! From the following images you can see that students enjoyed learning about many different aspects of Indigenous culture. Mrs Drinkwater Visual Arts Teacher.
