6. It is a reference tool to match job leads with your experience
7. It is the answer to why an employer should “hire you.”
Résumé Versions:
1. Presentation (Word Document or PDF) for the
interview, networking opportunities, etc.
2. ATS (Applicant Tracking Software) for uploading
and handing to employers for scanning
3. Text for online purposes (Employ Florida, Indeed,
CareerBuilders, Monster, etc.) applications
Résumé Content
• Contact Information: Include your LinkedIn, website and other social media addresses. (Just don’t overdo it)
• Job Title: Place the Job title at the top of the résumé, under your contact information
• Summary: Write a statement that answers the question: “Why should I hire you?”
• Employment History: Provide 10 years of work history (15 years
if relevant)
• Accomplishments: Quantify when possible in terms of “$, #, %” (Accomplishments are always written in the past tense … even in a current job)
• Key Words: Read job descriptions for your occupation and get the reoccurring key words and phrases in your résumé
• Abbreviations: Spell out abbreviations and acronyms (when first used)
• Proof Read: Check several times for spelling and grammatical errors. Then ask someone else to proof read your résumé
Layout/Format • Use ½-inch margins
• Balance white space around information • Use short sentences and paragraphs • Organize your résumé so it is easy to scan for
information and keep it to 1 or 2 pages • Do not over use caps, italics, underlines, bullets
and other formatting techniques • Do not use MS Word “Headers” or “Footers,”
graphs, tables, or graphics
Fonts
• Keep the font size to a minimum of 11 pts. and no larger than 18 pts
• Use fonts like: Arial, Calibri, Tahoma, or Verdana
• Stick with black type
Paper & Printing
• Use quality résumé paper and envelops (large)
• Use quality ink – no smudges or faint uneven
• Only use 8 1/2 x 11 paper
• Do not use card stock
• Do not staple or paper clip the pages of your
résumé
• Print only on one side of the sheet of paper
• Use light colors like white, ivory, cream, or neutral
Other Basic Tips
• Keep everything positive and upbeat
• Don’t lie on your résumé
• Do not include personal information
• Always include a cover letter unless you are
told “not to” by an employer
• Write the résumé avoiding the use of the
pronouns “I, me, or my” (e.g. “the first person)
• Tell your story but remember this is not your
autobiography
• Keep it short make every word impactful
