Revolution Brings Independence
How did Americans win their Independence?
The Americans won Independence by the Revolutionary war
They Began the revolution with forces that had poor quality compared to British Troops
But they had great leaders who were strengthened by theit dedication to Liberty
They were Victorious from the Revolutionary war and made their own government.
But not everyone wanted Independence
There were a few colonists did not want
Independence, they remained loyal to the
king
A couple of them went to Canada and
some of the others joined the British
Army
And some did not side with the British
nor with the Revolution
The Patriots
The Patriots were people who
actively supported the
movement for Independence
They were able to gain the
control of the government in
each colony
These colonies eventually
called States
Revolutionary Leaders were Faced with Issues
The Leaders formed a “Continental Army”
, which unfortunately received problems
They had problems with Money and
Supplies
The Congress tried to ask money from
other States but failed to, which resulted
to need for supplies for the troops
British Colonies move to NY
When the American Colonies drove out The British
Colonies, the Brits moved to New York
The two colonies fought over the year, in which
neither sides gained anything
The Turning point of the war came near Saratoga,
NY.
In there, A General named Horatio Gates had an
army which surrounded a British force led by a
British General named Sir John Burgoyne. He
eventually had to Surrender.
Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris, which was signed
at September of 1783, officially ended
the war.
This made the American Teritorry
strech from the Atlantic Ocean to the
Mississippi river, and from the great
lakes to the Spanish Florida
Organizing their Government
When America won their Independence, all Thirteen states had to choose which form of Government they should adopt
So they all chose Republican and each state adopted written constitutions.
But in this time, Women still are not allowed to vote, and neither Blacks nor Native Americans can vote too.
The good thing is that there is Religious Freedom, which influenced a couple of states.
A weak central Government is established
For the states to be united, the second continental
congress submitted a plan of union for their
approval in 1777
This plan called for “league of Friendship” among
the states
The Congress, however, can not impose taxes nor
did it have any way to enforce its discussions
Difficulty dealing with other Nations
The weak Government of the U.S. encountered
problems with Europe and other nations
Britain did not withdraw from the frontier ports on
American territories
Even though that was stated in the Treaty of Paris,
the Brits said that the treaty is diminished since
some states delayed payments of debts owed to the
Brits
The U.S. economy was also in trouble, the demand of British
goods made their debts more critical
Leaders Gather in Philadelphia
55 Delegates assemble in Philadelphia to consider
possible amendments to the articles of Confederation
The Delegates mostly consist of Farmers, Merchants,
Lawyers and Bankers, most of which had political
experiences
They found out that the articles did not help their
problems so they made an entirely different
Constitution
The new Constitution set up a Feudal System of
government, where the power would be shared between
the central government and state governments
Reactions to the new Constitution
At least nine states need to accept the Constitution
for it to take effect
A lot of people think that the Constitution gave too
much power to the federal government, they also
thought it would limit people’s rights and liberty,
Theses kind of people are called Anti federalists
Federalists are people who are for the constitution,
they believe that the U.S. would die without it
In 1788, the constitution was accepted by nine
states
Bill of Rights
The new Congress had to draw up 10 amendments
to the Constitution, theses were called the BILL OF
RIGHTS
It consisted of freedom of speech, religion, of the
press and Assembly
With the constitution and the bill of rights, America
is now becoming successful as a nation
The Success inspired people around the world to
work toward the establishment of liberty in their
own countries
