Dear Rideshare Friend,

The nice folks at Metro and these fine Rideshare Sponsors have got everything ready, from posters to pledge cards and more to help you run an amazing Rideshare Week campaign.

Rideshare Week is October 1-5, and when your employees pledge to share the ride they could win one of dozens of valuable prizes. Even you can win a great prize if you promote Rideshare Week and report your success. We’re also looking for some great rideshare stories for my “Visiting” program as seen on KCET, so please encourage your employees to write me at metro.net/rideshareweek about their “Tales From the Fast Lane”. Who knows…they just might become Rideshare Stars!

Thank you for all you do to help cut tra;c and improve our air quality.

I’ll be seein’ you in the Fast Lane.

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is Rideshare Week?Rideshare Week is an annual, statewide campaign designed to encourage commuters to take personal responsibility for reducing tra;c and smog by pledging to rideshare. Southland commuters who participate are eligible to win prizes. According to a Caltrans study, 60% of commuters who try ridesharing for the first time during Rideshare Week continue to rideshare at least occasionally afterward.

When is it?Monday-Friday, October 1-5, 2007. At least one day during the week, commuters are urged to carpool, vanpool, take the bus or train, walk, ride a bike to work or telecommute.

Who participates? All commuters are encouraged to participate. Hundreds of employers will host events at work sites promoting Rideshare Week.

Why share the ride?Southern California leads the nation in air pollution and tra;c congestion. Currently eight in ten commuters drive alone to work and tra;c congestion is growing by 3% each year. If changes aren’t made, average rush-hour speeds will drop by more than half in the next decade – from 35 mph to 15 mph. Sharing the ride is a low-cost solution that will help meet Southern California’s growing transportation needs.

SponsorsRideshare Week 2007 is sponsored by Metro, Automobile Club of Southern California, Avery Dennison, Currie Technologies (IZIP), Disney, Kaiser Permanente and VPSI.

> Recruit new riders and recognize current riders. O=er internal ridematching assistance, call 1.800.COMMUTE or refer to commutesmart.info.

> Collect Pledge Cards. Complete the Pledge Card Summary form.

> Send completed Pledge Cards and Pledge Card Summary form to: Metro Commute Services, One Gateway Plaza, 99-19-05, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Must be postmarked by October 24, 2007 to be entered in the prize drawings.

Promoting Rideshare WeekIdeas for a Great Campaign

> Make sure you let employees know where and when to return their pledge cards. There’s a blank space on the pledge card where you can write instructions such as where to return the pledge card.

> Help new riders find a partner. Pair them up with an existing car/vanpool, find a transit/rail partner and provide route schedules by calling 1.800.COMMUTE or by visiting commutesmart.info. Hold department competitions for the highest participation. O=er incentives such as co=ee and donuts for all, promotional items and/or have an internal ra<e.

> Have your employees email Huell Howser their Rideshare stories. Huell will feature the best stories on his “Visiting” program on KCET. Employees can email Huell by visiting metro.net/rideshareweek.

> Consider distributing and collecting pledge cards in one spot. A good idea: setting up a pledge card table in the lunchroom or at sta= meetings.

> Keep the Rideshare Week message going strong with posters, email messages, newsletter reminders, displays and announcements at sta= meetings.

> If you are holding a rideshare fair or event, make a completed pledge card their ticket to get in and they’ll love being photographed in a carpool with Huell as he drives in the fast lane in this life-size display available for checkout. If you need clip art, it’s available to download at metro.net/rideshareweek.
