Greetings Key Clubbers of Division 9! My name is Juliana Rodriguez, I am freshman from Bear Creek High
School, and I am the newly elected Division 9 Lieutenant Governor for this coming
year! Although the school year is coming to an end, the 2012-2013 Key Club year
is just beginning! As we all embark on this incredible, fun, service-filled year I
would like to take a moment to thank you for all of your greatly appreciated hard
work this past year and also let you know a little bit about myself.
I joined Key Club when I found that it was the one organization at my
school that held the absolute most enthusiastic, caring students all of which became
my friends instantly! I was moved by its commitment to service and its selfless
endeavors and knew I could think of it as a home in the chaos of high school. Like
you all, service is a big part of my life and I believe a community of committed,
dedicated people is the most powerful and influential thing in the world. I was
persuaded to run for LTG because I wanted to contribute to this organization on a
deeper level and share my talents and leadership with the community. Outside of
key club I love debate, violin, whistling, telling stories, singing random songs,
super corny jokes, and am a huge Harry Potter nerd. I love pelicans, camp fires, and
Mondays! My favorite activities include talking and meeting new people so I am
greatly looking forward to meeting you all in the coming year.
I am fun and easy going but I also believe in working hard! Included in this
newsletter are reports on events, my goals, a few resources to get you ready for
the summer, and a few small but absolutely essential tasks to get us started with a
successful year. The upmost important is that you email me or send me your
faculty advisor and newly elected board members’ names, positions, phone
numbers, addresses, and emails so we can build up strong system of
communication (details can be found on last page). This must be done by June
15th at the latest!
I hope that you are ready for a great year! I know that Key Club can be
overwhelming sometimes but with discipline, enthusiasm, and cooperation you
can do it! I could not choose to work with a better group of students and I am
thrilled to see what we will make out of this year. I am here to support you in
every way I can so please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Yours in service,
Juliana Rodriguez

Lieutenant Governor Breakdown The essential purpose of the Lieutenant Governor is to serve as the liaison between Key Club
at the District Level and at the Club Level. Division 9 is made up of nine Key Clubs. These
include Arvada High School, Standley Lake High School, Bear Creek High School, Columbine
High School, Jefferson High School, Jefferson Academy, Lakewood Sr. High School, Wheat
Ridge High School and Alameda High School. As the Lieutenant Governor for Division 9, it is my
duty to make sure the clubs have someone they can depend on for guidance and assistance.
My responsibilities include holding divisional activities and divisional training rallies, visiting clubs,
and writing newsletters. I will also be the main form of communication between the Rocky
Mountain District and Division 9. If you ever need anything I am a great person to contact for
Key Club resources!
My goals
1. Hold at least 5 PCMs
(presidential council
meetings over the
course of the year),
some in person, some
over Skype.
2. Get every club’s
contact information by
June 15th.
3. Hold an officer training
session in early August.
4. Plan a Division Wide
Function.
5. Visit every club at least
once.
6. Write monthly
newsletters.
7. Promote interactions
between our clubs
8. Have members from
each club attend next
year’s District
Convention
9. Achieve the Robert F.
Lucas Outstanding LT.
Governor Award
10. Attend all District Board
Meetings and events.
11. Keep all clubs engaged
and informed!
12. Have fun and make
lasting friendships!

A Convention Report District Convention 2012
This year, the Sheraton Denver West Hotel hosted over 250 Key Club members at the annual District
Convention from April 12-15. I had the incredible opportunity to meet many members of our division’s
clubs and I know they all had a blast. Just ask anyone who attended the convention and they will testify
that it was a life-changing experience.
“The experience was impeccable and amazing! DCON gave me the opportunity to break out of my shell
and experience the unexpected especially at my speaking Workshop. Key Club gave me the vital push
to become a better individual.” – Marcus Gutierrez
“DCON was amazing and I got to meet a lot of new people. It was one of the best weekends ever!”-
Aimee Bui.
“DCON was awesome. You won’t believe how much fun I had! Friends. Experiences. Fun.” Jennifer
Nguyen
“Amazing, spectacular, and fun! Gets you out of your comfort zone!”- Darian Garcia.
“Best Key Club DCON yet especially the dinner at Old Chicago with 45 people!”- Joaquin Miranda.
Some highlights include keynote speaker Bo Shafer, representatives from the Women’s Bean Project,
forums on service partners and leadership, the elections of our new district officers, Zumba, Bingo, a visit
by the CU Buffoons, trauma dolls, an incredible Hollywood themed dance, a talent show, an oratory
contest (I heard the winner was this really cool chick from Bear Creek High School who likes to talk a lot
and also makes awesome newsletters), lots of laughs, and of course friends brought together by the
magic of Key Club.
But the most important news is that we exceeded our goal for the past district project Children of Peace
International by raising $14,000 in pledges and donations! Congratulations! This money goes to a school
RMD Key Club has built in SaPa, Vietnam.
Our newly elected officers for the
2012-2013 District Board include
Governor JD Manzanares,
Secretary Bronte Gillman, Treasurer
Alannah Roth, and Bulletin Editor
Miranda Samon!

Service in the Sun This is an excerpt from an article by the international Key
Club Magazine that I thought would interest you especially
as summer is quickly approaching. It also features Rocky
Mountain District’s 2011-2012 Convention Chair Karissa
Korf! Enjoy! Summer doesn't have to mean a break from Key Club
Story by Dick Isenhour Finals are finished. Classes are done. When that bell rings, you can feel the excitement. School’s out for the summer.
During summer break, many Key Clubbers head to the beach, the park or even the mall. They’re having fun, of course, but they’re also providing good ol’ Key Club service.
Karissa Korf believes service shouldn’t stop when the school year does. “Summertime may be a hard time to bring your Key Club together to do projects,” she says, “but there are many service projects and activities clubs can do. The key: Summer projects should be fun, not a drag.”
Korf, a member of the University High School Key Club in Greeley, Colorado, has a lot of cred as an organizer. In her fourth year as chairman of the planning committee for the Rocky Mountain District convention, she’s no stranger to engaging Key Club members. And there are advantages to planning activities in the summer.
“The weather tends to be nicer during the summer,” Korf says, “so planning a service project or other fun activity is a tempting way to get your classmates out of the house to enjoy Mother Nature while doing good things. You’re not competing with classes and other school-related activities for their time, which is an added bonus. Key Club members are probably looking for things to do with their friends.”
Working in parks, cleaning up yards or mowing lawns for money are among some of Korf’s recommended summertime activities. She also suggests asking around your high school for ideas.
“Your school might need help to improve its look,” Korf says. “Volunteer your club to paint walls, fix things, plant flowers, pick up trash or whatever needs to be done. School budgets are tight these days, and your school will welcome the help.”
Not all activities during the summer have to be service-related. Korf suggests a barbecue or a pool party to help members stay in touch and hang out.“Socials bring members of your club together,” she says. “That makes your club a close-knit group and sets the stage for a productive school year.” For the full article, visit http://www.keyclub.org/discover/kcm/March2012mag.aspx.
