Solids and Liquids On Monday, students were presented with a variety of objects that they were asked to discuss and sort with their groups. This lead to an
introduction of solids and liquids, which one of the groups had chosen as the categories!
Students then worked in pairs to investigate a number of solids to determine their properties. They identified properties such as:
flexible, rigid, smooth, rough, soft, hard, has color, pointed and flat. There were some great conversations taking place!
We were treated to an assembly on Friday! Doug Nolan, founder of
Rock Steady Juggling, used comedy, magic, and of course, juggling, to teach students about water conservation. It was a very entertaining
presentation!
The Mad Dash is this Friday! Come cheer on Room 23 and the students of Strawberry
Point from 1:30 – 2:30. Hope to see you there!

Using Drama to Bring Stories to Life!
1
Word Study
In Phonics, we focused on l blends (bl-, cl-, fl-, gl-, pl-, sl-).
Sight words reviewed and added to our word wall were: and, up, at, see, can and no.
Not only do students know what a noun is, but they should also be able to tell you the difference between a common and proper noun. Adding on to our study of nouns, students turned singular nouns into plural nouns by adding “s”.
HWT
We have been learning how to form lowercase letters. Students should
2
now use correct formation for c, o, v, w and s.
Reading
In Reading Workshop, we learned good habits for solving hard words. Students used picture clues and meaning to figure out words. They also learned to double-check their reading. Everyone is doing a wonderful job using all of the reading strategies that we have been learning!
Writing
In Writing Workshop, students continued learning how to bring their stories to life by taking itsy-bitsy steps and making characters think and feel. They also used drama by acting out
3
their stories. More details were revealed using this strategy.
Math
“Introducing Addition” is the second unit in our math program. Students have been practicing strategies such as: counting on, recognizing pairs of numbers that add to 10, and the turn-around rule (Commutative Property of Addition). New games included Roll and Total and Ten Frame Top-It. We have also been reviewing concepts and skills with “Math Boxes”. Although challenging, students will become more independent as the school year progresses.

Some one came knocking At my wee, small door; Some one came knocking I’m sure-sure-sure; I listened, I opened, I looked to left and right, But naught there was a stirring In the still dark night;
5
Only the busy beetle Tap-tapping in the wall, Only from the forest The screech-owl’s call, Only the cricket whistling While the dewdrops fall, So I know not who came knocking, At all, at all, at all.
