2018 TOOHEYS NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE
ROUND 9
MATT'S MESSAGE ceo matt harris
This weekend signifies the start of the second half of the Business Plaza Cup and what a competition we have. The congested points ladder and recent results demonstrate that at this stage no clear competition favourite exists and the battle for a finals spot will most likely continue until the last round of the home-and-away season.
Round 8 results again produced some surprises. South Newcastle proved far too clinical for competition leaders Lakes United running out 26 to 6 winners. The Butcher Boys secured an important 26 to 14 away win against Cessnock while Maitland bounced back to form with a commanding 36 point win over Kurri Kurri at Maitland Sportsground. In Sunday?s 2017 grand final rematch West Newcastle exacted some revenge with a 22 ? 12 win. The loss for the defending premiers was their fifth in a row and included some more injuries to add to their already long list.
In this week?s fixtures Cessnock host rivals Maitland at Cessnock Sportsground in the lone Saturday game. On Sunday Macquarie will look for their first win since round three when they travel to Cahill Oval to take on Lakes United while South Newcastle will battle Kurri Kurri at Townson Oval. Also on Sunday and this week?s BarTV match of the round Central Newcastle take on West Newcastle at St John Oval. With the Central squad including a number of former Rosellas players it should be an interesting, and tight, battle. To view this match jump on to our website (www.newcastlerugbyleague.com.au) or Facebook page (Tooheys Newcastle Rugby League).

KURRI KURRI BULLDOGS?You can lose when you out score som ebody in a gam e. And you can w in when you?re out scored.? ? John Wooden. The LLT did not get the desired result against Maitland going down in a close encounter 18-10. However speaking with Co-Coach Gilmour after the game he was happy with the improvements that the team made during this fixture. Further to this he said particular areas that they had slated for improvement and worked on at training there were notable improvements on game day. Onwards and upwards for the LLT team, great work coach Gilmour and Linnane.
The Firestorm reserve grade team put in a much improved performance coming away with the win in a tight encounter. The squad have been working hard on improving on coach Leggett?s defensive principles and this showed in the game against Maitland coming away with their second win of the season.
The third grade Juggernaut continued to roll on with them now sitting atop the ladder undefeated at the midway point of the season. To be undefeated thus far is a great achievement in any sporting competition at any level. The coaches must be acknowledged for bringing the group together and having them continually work hard and build on performances each week, great work Coach Collingwood and Hill.
The Kurri Kurri Bulldogs would also like to acknowledge the two first grade debutants for season 2018 thus far, with Jono Maloney making his first grade debut against West Newcastle and Cal Nugent against Maitland. Jono has spent the last few seasons playing rugby union, he wanted to come back to league and test himself and he has done so amicably. Cal came to the club via group21, a tough as teak backrower who comes up with the same level performance weekly. Congratulations to both on fantastic to grade initiations.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank our supporters, volunteer staff, players? families and sponsors, you?re unwavering and loyal support affords us the opportunity to participate in the greatest game of all and be the great club we are.

MACQUARIE SCORPIONS
PATRON: MR COL BURNS:
Last weekend the Scorpions travelled to Cessnock to take on Western Suburbs after Harker Oval was washed out due to heavy rain during the week. Unfortunately the change in venue did not help the Scorpions going down hard fought games in First grade, Opens and Under 19s and it was the Reserve Grade who came away with an incredibly gutsy win to get the club on the board.
Although the three sides lost on the day the club and the coaching staff could not have been prouder of the effort put in by the players in all grades on the day. With 12 players missing from the top two squads from injury and suspensions it certainly made it difficult for all the teams, but every team showed great commitment which is all that a club and supporters can ask for. It doesn?t get any better this weekend with further injuries coming out of the West game with Adam Swadling suffering what appeared to be a serious head/neck injury. Everyone associated with the Scorpions wishes Adam a speedy recovery.
A special mention must go to the three Under 17 boys who backed up to play Under 19s at the weekend. A big thank you to Liam Jordan, Jack Greenwood and Jonty Moore
Just a reminder to all Scorpions supporters that tickets are still available in the 300 club with a first prize of $10,000 with the draw taking place at Toronto Workers Club on Saturday 4 August at 3.00pm. Food and drinks
will be provided to 300 club ticket holders.

MAITLAND PICKERS
After a few weeks of very close score lines, Round 8 saw our Ladies League tag team secure their first win for the season with a convincing score of 18-10 against Kurri. After a nil all draw the week before this team is only just starting to shine with some exciting combinations emerging amongst the team and immense talent across the park, and will be a force to be reckoned with. Congratulations ladies! A very well deserved win!
First grade and u19?s also had a message to send on their return home with a battering against Kurri of 42-6 and 64 nil respectively.
Unlucky results for our open grade side that started strong, only running out of steam in the second half losing to the better team on the day 34-14, Reserve grade unfortunately lapsed in their defence in the final minutes with Kurri taking the win at 20-14.
Round 9 this weekend and we continue the coalfields rival with all away games at Cessnock.
LLT ? 10:00
19?s - 11:00
Opens- 12:15

Don?t forget we have our Annual Pickers ball this weekend! All are invited to attend! Tickets will be available to purchase at training, this weekend?s games and also at the door on the night. Tickets include Food & Beverage Package and entertainment by Dan Runchel Music. It?s sure to be a great night and we look forward to celebrating with all our supporters and Sponsors.
We hope to see you all back at our new home Club Maitland City after this weekend games.

LAKES UNITED SEAGULLS
Due to the wet weather last week, our U19?s and Third Grade games were postponed, which only saw us take on Souths in the remaining 3 grades for the day.
Our Ladies League Tag started the day off with a brave effort but unfortunately were beaten by a very good South Newcastle team, 24-10.
Next up, Reserve Grade played the competition leaders, which was always going to be a hard task. However, with a full squad and the boys playing some really good footy, we were able to defend a very strong South?s team to come away with a 16-6 victory.
Moving on to the main event for the day with First Grade, we always knew it was going to be a tight game as both teams welcomed back some NSW cup players. The Seagulls held on and were in it until the last 10 minutes of the game, but unfortunately the conditions favoured the South Newcastle team more than us and they skipped away with a 26-6 win.
Today we welcome our loyal supporters and sponsors back to Cahill Oval as we take on our ?across the lake? rivals, Macquarie Scorpions. As we move into the second round of the competition, it?s great to see the continual effort in all grades and we are really enjoying seeing the progress continue throughout the club as a whole.
We hope you all enjoy your day at Cahill Oval and hopefully we can come away with 4 victories. We welcome
everyone back to our great sponsor, Jewells Tavern, for the after match presentation.
WEST NEWCASTLE ROSELLAS
Wests would like to thank the Cessnock Rugby League Club for allowing us to play our home game at Cessnock last Sunday, due to Harker Oval being unplayable. The hospitality shown us by the Cessnock Officials was very
much appreciated.
West s LLT. Our ladies did not play last Sunday at Cessnock and are looking forward to their game against Central
Newcastle at St. John Oval this Sunday. Your Wests family wish you all the very best.
U 19?s. Our young men have kept up the high standard of rugby league they started the season with and remain undefeated. They faced a very determined Macquarie Scorpions side with the score being 18 to 10 at half time. They won the second half with the final score being 28 to 16. A great effort by all players. Your Wests fans are really enjoying watching you play. Tries to Felly McHughes (2); Nathan O?Brien; Tao Matoka; Dyllan Parlane and
Jacob Snowball. Goals to Sam McKenna and Nick Haggerty.
Awards: Players Player, Felly McHughes; Coaches, Dyllan Parlane and Directors went to Scott Casson.
Open Grade. Had a tough encounter against the Macquarie Scorpions in the first half with the score being 6 all. However, in the second half they took control of the game with the final score being 24 to 6. A very good effort
from all our players. We hope you can repeat your effort this Sunday against Central Newcastle.
Tries to Taniela Mallangi; Joshua Berwick; Nathan Batzre; Tyrone Polyak and Reggie Wright. Reggie Wright kicked
two goals. Awards: Players Player, Tyrone Polyak; Coaches, Martin Day and Directors to Taniela Mailangi.
West s Reserve Grade. Were a litt le slow starting, going down in the first half 6 to 16. They played much better in the second half and tried hard to claw back the deficit but went down 14 to 18. Your Wests supporters know you are capable of bouncing back into the winners circle this Sunday against Central Newcastle. Tries to Daniel Howe;
Frazer Price and Manu Matoka. One goal to Michael Hendry.
Awards: Players Player, Viko Puliuvea; Coaches, Martin Day and Directors to Viko Puliuvea.
West s First Grade. A wonderful effort by all our players to defeat the premiers, Macquarie Scorpions by 22 to 12. The score was 6 all at half time, with a very good second half from our team. This was an exciting game with our players having to tough it out all the way. With so many great efforts it was hard for the selectors to make their
awards. Tries to James Elias (2); Josh Allison and Willis Alatini. Sam Keenan kicked three goals.
Awards: Players Player, Matt Herman; Coaches and Directors to James Elias.
