Throughout the e ighteenth centur y, the name Dar ley occurs

Corporat ion of Masons.
George and Hi l l Dar ley were responsible for a large number
of des igns for chimneypieces , many of which are now in the

When we col lected this p ine mantelpiece for
restorat ion i t was in a ver y poor condit ion. The
owner had the per fect locat ion for i t to be insta l led
and he wanted i t to look l ike i t d id in the 1750s
when i t was made by John Kel ly of Dubl in. Forty
percent of the car ved e lements were miss ing. Both
of the jambs car vings f rom top to bottom were
complete ly gone, but there remained an out l ine
f rom the or ig inal car vings. From this out l ine and
our re ference of s imi lar p ieces by John Kel ly, we
were able to deduce that a chain of husks once
decorated the pi lasters .
We car ved the husks by hand from a s imi lar sect ion
of p ine and attached them to the jambs. Much of
the car ved f r ieze was a lso miss ing or badly broken
but we managed to replace the miss ing pieces . We
gessoed the ent ire mantelpiece, a technique used in
the 18th and 19th centuries for achieving f ine deta i l
and f inished by paint ing i t a per iod of f-white colour.
When insta l l ing the mantelpiece we re instated
the marble s l ips which were miss ing. We used a
per iod Breccia V iolet marble with white Carrara
marble bul l -nose moldings. The chamber was bui l t
us ing rec la imed br icks and l ime mortar, which we
distressed with soot to achieve a used look. The new
one piece s late hearth was recessed into the f loor
boards and we suppl ied a ver y smart pair of 18th
centur y stee l andirons.

This 18th centur y statuar y marble chimneypiece
was sa lvaged from a per iod bui ld ing that had not
been l ived in for over 15 years . The chimneypiece
had to be removed from the wal l in separate
components as i ts condit ion was unstable . You
can see f rom the photograph above that the f ront
pi laster had a lready fa l len of f, but thankful ly
was not broken. As you would expect f rom a
chimneypiece this o ld there were many cracks
and chips which needed repaired. Over two
hundred years of d ir t and gr ime had accumulated
on the surface which required a marble poult ice
to remove. The chimneypiece was reconstructed
using marble res in and then waxed, br inging i t
back to i ts or ig inal 18th centur y g lor y.
As the chimneypiece was to be insta l led
in an 18th centur y bui ld ing, the c l ient
wanted the chimneypiece and a l l i ts f i t t ings
to be histor ica l ly correct . We insta l led the
chimneypiece with a suitable neo-c lass ica l per iod
stee l grate that we had sourced. For the hearth
we used statuar y Carrara marble cut the same
width as the bottom of the chimneypiece and
with an e l l ipt ica l cur ve at the back. Within the
cur ve we used black Ki lkenny l imestone and
distressed the ent ire hearth to s imulate age. The
chamber was l ined with b lack Ki lkenny l imestone
and was bui l t us ing rec la imed 18th centur y c lay
br icks with a gr i t l ime mortar.

We have restored hundreds, i f not thousands,
of s late f i replaces over the years so we have
truly per fected the art of marble is ing. The s late
surround was pr imed by str ipping the f i replace
down into pieces and removing the o ld paint . A l l
chips and cracks were repaired and the f i replace
was reassembled.
We marble ised the f i replace b lack with gold
panels , as se lected by the owner of the f i replace
f rom a large choice of colours .
The cast i ron insert was str ipped and pol ished
by hand af ter we had replaced the miss ing
grates . To complete the restorat ion the customer
se lected a suitable set of or ig inal V ictor ian t i les
f rom our rec la imed col lect ion.

Ryan & Smith were asked to restore this Carrara
marble f i replace to i ts or ig inal g lor y. The
chimneypiece was s i tuated in a large V ictor ian
terrace house in Dubl in, which had been l is ted
as a protected structure. The f i replace had been
extensive ly modi f ied during the 1960s; the
occupier had removed the marble arches, cast
i ron insert and s late hearth to insta l l a modern
t i led insert and hearth.
Our chal lenge was to reproduce the marble
arches to the correct des ign, for which we had
pictor ia l re ference for. We used rec la imed Carrara
marble that matched the or ig inal per fect ly
and car ved the two miss ing arches. The ent ire
f i replace had to be taken apart , c leaned and
pol ished. We then re insta l led the f i replace with a
per iod V ictor ian cast i ron insert and s late hearth
recessed f lush into the f loor boards.

The Ir ish Georgian Society ( IGS) has recent ly
moved of f ice to the City Assembly House in
Dubl in’s South Wil l iam Street . This ver y f ine

This example is I r ish, George I I in per iod

We removed this V ictor ian cast i ron f i replace
f rom a condemned bui ld ing in Bel fast . I t had
many layers of paint , accumulated over the years ,
which was f laking and masking the f ine deta i l . We
began the restorat ion by chemical ly str ipping the
paint by hand, not sand blast ing as this p i ts the
metal . With the paint removed we discovered a
beaut i ful set of V ictor ian hand painted t i les .
We repaired two of the t i les which were broken
and replaced the miss ing grates with repl icas we
had in stock. The metal work was then pr imed
and pol ished by hand to achieve the correct
t radit ional f inish.

The art of s tone and marble car ving has changed l i t t le over the
centuries and here at Ryan & Smith we use tradit ional techniques to
accurate ly reproduce ant ique stone and marble f i replaces .
Our knowledge and understanding of histor ic mater ia ls , proport ions

Our ever expanding range includes designs f rom the late 17th
centur y to the ear ly 20th centur y, a l l o f which are hand car ved by
highly tra ined craf tsmen. These designs have been copied direct ly
f rom original per iod f i replaces which we have sold in the past .
The mater ia ls we use are sourced and handpicked f rom stone yards
and quarr ies a l l over Europe, they are the same mater ia ls used in
centuries past . We a lso have a large and var ied stock of ant ique
mater ia l , o f which we are extremely proud. When producing a

The marble and stone we use are of the highest qual i ty and
consistency of colour is most important , which is why each piece is
handpicked. Our white statuar y marble is the purest avai lable and
can look authentica l ly per iod, with an ant ique pol ish and wax.
As many of the semi precious marbles used in the 18th centur y
have been mined to ext inct ion, we often use ant ique marbles . We
have a large col lect ion of ant ique marbles , most of which has come
from an abandoned Dorset marble yard that lay dormant for over
100 years , unt i l we discovered i t and bought the ent ire stock. Other
ant ique marbles have been rec la imed from var ious per iod bui ld ings
including Armagh cathedral .
Port land and Bath stone were the two premier stones used in the
18th and 19th centuries , and today is no di f ferent . We source
the mater ia l d irect ly f rom quarr ies which have been act ive for
many hundreds of years . The stone can be f inished to indiv idual
requirements , f rom a smooth f ine pol ish, to a heavi ly d istressed
texture to s imulate age.

This large Pal ladian sty le
f i replace was designed by the
c l ient with ass istance f rom us.
The c l ient ’s wish was to use
Bath stone as the exter ior wal ls
of the house were the ver y
same. She fe l t an over-mantel
f i replace with height would
create an important focal point
for a large hal l .
The customer was restor ing
a per iod house and had been
searching for a s imi lar f i replace
to what she had le f t behind in
her previous house. When her
search was unsuccessful she
decided that we should copy
the f i replace and distress i t to
look as authentic as poss ib le .
