Dear Parents
I hope you are all doing well and not too fed up of this situation. As you know, we will be in school giving out books on Friday at your allotted time. So next week’s work will include page numbers of books on specific topics. But for now this week’s work will use the usual format. Once again we want to stress we don’t in any way want to add to your stress so just do what you feel you or your child are able for. Please make sure to prioritise going over phonic sounds in sound copies, try and do some blending and keep reading. Here are some suggested activities for the week ahead. Again, we stress there is no pressure to complete all of these. We have attached a fun activity grid and some more lists for word blending.
Thanks again
Week of May 18thEnglish:
● Pick a sound to revise (y,x,sh,ch,th). Sing the song. Do the actions. Think of words that begin with this sound. Try to write some of these words and draw a picture! Alphablocks - th - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB43Qgu2Oac-sh/ch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI-WbhuVOXI
● Practise your letters – r,m,n,h. (make sure to start at the top!)
● Do some blending from wordlist 7a, 8a, 9a (Attached)
● ‘Starlight Junior Infants’- look at Poster 14 – the supermarket, (www.folensonline.ie, teacher, roll number code: prim20) Discuss the items you might put on your shopping list. Ask the children to remember 5 items. Listen to the poem ‘shopping basket’- you will find this included as one of the activities on the poster.
● Look at the books on the Oxford Owl website https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/ Look for ebooks, then age 4-5
Maths:
● Talk about zero and what it means, nothing objects on a table/on a plate/in a basket/ in a box etc
● Practice writing the number 0 (start at the top and go anticlockwise)
● Search for number 0! Write lots of numbers all over a piece of paper. Ask your child to draw a circle around all of the number 0s!
● Numberblocks for zero - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeRIpU4Ibo4
● Gather 5 objects from around the house (spoons, teddies, sweets, etc.) Use these to combine totals of less than 5 but using zero (e.g. 0 oranges and 2 oranges make 2 oranges, 4 spoons and 0 spoons make 4 spoons etc.)- children often struggle with the concept that if you add zero to a number it stays the same ie 2 and 0 makes 2 (children often say it makes 0)
● Use the interactive multimedia activities in the Busy At Maths book (focus on activities 99-105)(cjfallon - https://my.cjfallon.ie/dashboard/student-resources and select the following filterslevel - primaryclass - junior infantssubject – maths
