• favourable external perceptions of the Institution,
• good reputation at regional, na-tional and international levels,
• respected business and public im-age of leadership and academics,
• absence of negative reviews in mass media,
• favourable press appraisal.
Richfield Graduate Institute of Tech-nology, formerly known as PC Training and Business College, commenced operations in 1990. Richfield made the decision in 2015 to change the name of the Institute and do a com-plete rebranding. This rebranding saw better programme structures, a new Senate and Faculties that are in line with those adopted by Universi-ties around the world - allowing Rich-field Graduate Institute of Technology to compete on equal footing with various other Universities around South Africa.
Jay Ramnundlall, CEO of Richfield, indi-cated that the organization has grown from strength to strength and this can be attrib-uted to the dedication and hard work of staff around the country. The organisation continuously strives in improving the qual-ity of teaching, by integrating technology into the curriculum to improve success rates.
“Richfield is South Africa’s most afford-able Higher Education Institution and has been operating successfully for the past 27 years, with 33 Higher Education campuses and 40 TVET campuses open nationally. The Institution has earned a place in the hearts of over 280 000 graduates who have successfully completed a range of qualifications, providing a critical service to those seeking a brighter future, by educat-ing themselves for the world of work.” says Ramnundlall,
When asked by the media, Ramnundlall, responded that the effective manage-ment of the challenges faced by the In-stitution in executing its change of name from PC Training & Business College to the Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology required bold leadership actions to ad-dress, amongst others:
• By-in from Institutional Academia and Leadership
• Negotiating and approval from the many regulators in South Africa and SADC
• Responding to managerial blockages in
execution• An effective execution of Blue Ocean strategies to reach new markets• Re-alignment of lead-ership to adapt to the evolving environment• Separation of Corpo-rate Leadership from Ac-ademic Achievements and Development • Re-invention of Cor-porate Culture and re-location to a Corporate Office• New long term part-nerships with technol-ogy partners including Vodacom, Standard Bank and Edcon• Improved Working In-tegrated opportunities
for students, bridging the gap between the Institution and the world of work.
Mr Ramnundlall was quick to point out that in its 27-year history, the Institution received great accolades and awards on a regional, national and international scale. Two other significant awards received recently in-clude:
• National Business Awards – the Oscars of South African Business The 2016 South African Winner of Excel-lence in the category “Investing in Peo-ple” award
• PMR Africa, Diamond Arrow Award Richfield Graduate Institute of Technol-ogy won the IT Training Institution: Out-standing 1st overall for doing most in the education sector for stimulating economic growth and development of the KwaZulu-Natal Province in 2016.
“We live in times of exponential change,” says Ramnundlall, “so it is critical that we equip the next generation of learners in a cutting edge environment in order be com-petitive on a global scale.”
Ramnundlall goes on to quote the words of Former President Nelson Mandela: “Educa-tion is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Richfield’s CEO, Jay Ramnundlall, pursues International collaboration with Prof. Fritz H. A. Pinnock, Executive Dean, Caribbean Maritime University, Professor John Netting, Director General, Europe Business Academy and Prof. T. Jayasingam, Vice Chancellor Eastern University of Sri Lanka

Richfield Certified with ISO 9001: 2015 and OHSAS 18001: 2007
Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology (Pty) Ltd is proud to announce that its qual-ity assurance accomplishments have been beefed up by becoming the first educational Institution on a global scale to be certified against the ISO 9001:2015 quality standard by the accredited agency known as IMS Inter-national. In addition, Richfield was also certi-fied against the OHSAS 18001: 2007 health and safety standard by the same agency.
All of Richfield’s campuses and administra-tive centres throughout South Africa and the SADC region conforms to the International quality standards. The scope of supply being defined as the Provision of Higher Education & Training, Distance Learning and Vocational Technical Studies, Professional Learning & Skills Programmes to International Organisa-tions and Individuals. Richfield has embarked on an integrated management approach sys-tem designed and implemented by Sherq-Co
SA as reported by Sherq-Co CEO, Mr. Dee-nash Singh.
The Award was presented by Rhenee Singh who is the Managing Director of IMS Certi-fication, Africa, to the senior leadership of Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology at a media briefing held at the Holiday Inn’s Gar-den Court Hotel on the 1st December 2016. The IMS International was established in 1994 and gained UKAS Accreditation in 1998. Since then the company has continued to ex-pand across the world providing certification audits and complementary services to clients from a diverse range of sectors. Rhenee not-ed that this is the internationally recognised quality management system standard. The aim of ISO 9001 is to ensure consistent qual-ity of services or products and to enhance customer satisfaction.
In responding to the execution of the ISO 9001: 2015 standard, Richfield’s CEO, Mr. Jay Ramnundlall, stated that the Institution had to improve or develop new strategies around the following:
• The general requirements for or-ganising and managing Richfield’s processes, documents and records at mul-tiple campuses, including the main cam-puses and new corporate office.
In 2015, Richfield Graduate Insti-tute of Technology received the Cen-tury International Quality ERA Award in the Gold Category. Richfield was recognized for Commitment in Quality Leadership, Technology and Innovation. Mr. Jay Ramnundlall, CEO, received the prize on behalf of Richfield Graduate Insti-tute of Technology at the InterContinental Geneva Convention Hall, from the President of BID Group, Jose E. Prieto. Richfield makes quality a core focus for continuous improvement of management and to maintain leadership in the education sector and community.
Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology was spe-cifically recognised for its impressive programmes in the field of Work Integrated Learning (WIL), which increases the rate of employability of students, as well as its commitment to promoting tech-nology by providing its students free ac-cess to high-tech devices and data networks which has the additional spin off of creating a “green” culture by encouraging students and educators to move away from the excessive use of paper.
“We pioneered introduction of Tablet PC’s in Southern Africa in 2012, when we provided our learners with free Tablet PC’s,” states Ramnundlall,“allowing us to make education more accessible both geographically with Distance Learning (ODL) and without time constraints. Over 80 000 Tablet PC’s have since been distributed to students making this initiative a pioneering one on a Global scale.”
Name CHANGE a BIG SUCCESS !!!
The most significanct event for 2016 was the im-plementation of the name change of the Institution from “PC Training and Business College” to “Richfield Graduate Institute of Technology (Pty) Ltd” abbreviated to “Richfield” and abbreviated as “RGI”. Although this constitutes a name change in a regulatory and statutory context, the Institution’s brand migration has effectively moved the “College” to become a “Pri-vate University”.
Richfield may award Degrees in South Africa, but is prevented by regulations from calling itself a “University.” Richfield’s strategic focus has remained unchanged and remain active in HET, TVET, Skills and Distance Learning.

Assessments and its associated feedback are essential to student learning. However, much of a lec-turer’s time is taken up with the areas of assessment associated with quality assurance, marking and copious writing, rather than its potential to support students’ learning. A well-designed as-sessment has numerous benefits aside from the obvious one of providing a measure of students’ progress as it can be a means to engage students with their learning.
An increased focus on quality enhancement and use of tech-nology at Richfield prompted the institution to plan, prepare and imple-ment online assessments. In addition the cor-responding increase in time spent by staff on setting and marking assessments has encour-
aged interest into how technology can assist in this area. It has been established that, after the initial teething problems, technology can be used for assessment purposes at various levels ranging from the management of the
assessment information to a fully automated assessment system.
The idea of having assessments computer-ized at RGI is obviously very attractive and on-line assessment is emerging as a major driver for e−learning for both students and staff and has several advantages. However, it also has some disadvantages and associated problems.
BENEFITS OF ONLINE ASSESSMENTS• By using online assessment centers students
have access to a growing bank of Multiple choice questions for revision purposes. This bank is available at any time, through software provided free of charge by RGI and can be used for a number of purpos-es such as mock examinations, practice tests etc.
• Time management is simplified as on line assessments have a built-in count-down. This ensures each student has the
full amount of time allocated to them. Extra time can be added for students with disabilities through access arrangements.• Responses are typed, allowing candidates to easily review and edit their work, before submit-ting in the case of short essay type questions.• Marking may be reduced as a number of online assessments contain questions which are automatically marked by com-puter.• Lecturers spend limited to nil time on marking, thereby providing more time for actual teaching for learning• More frequent formative and
summative assessments can be built into the academic cycle.
• Students engage in self-assessment; in the student’s own time, at their own pace, when they are ready.
• Students can be invited to sit tests as fre-quently as they find useful.
CONCLUSION
In the final analysis, despite the initial teething problems online assessments potentially offers advantages over traditional modes of assessment, including, for example, greater speed of marking, immediate feedback to both student and examiner and a more entertaining assessment experience in keeping with current technological trends offered at most tertiary institutions globally.
