Supervisors will establish housekeeping standards for all work areas and facilities under their charge. If a supervisor determines housekeeping training is required; training material is available at the Risk Management Office.Supervisors will consider implementing the 5S program (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) for their office, section, shop. Implementing 5S is very effective in improving housekeeping. 5S training can be coordinated through the Risk Management Office. Risk Management staff will apply and consider housekeeping as an area of emphasis during CY15 safety inspections for the command and tenant activities.
Increase Medical Surveillance Compliance
(97% or Greater)
Supervisors who have employees enrolled in a medical surveillance program will attend training on the use of Supervisor’s Medical Surveillance and Certification Exam Referral form and the use of Occupational Medical Surveillance System (OMSS) in ESAMS. Safety Officers will coordinate the training with the Occupational Health Program Manager in the Risk Management Office, Mr. Stacey L. Williams.
Supervisors will identify, assign, and document all occupational related medical surveillance requirements and exposures (i.e. hearing, respiratory, bloodborne pathogens, forklift, etc.) and enter the most recent physical exams accordingly in OMSS for all Marines and Civilian Marines.

What Do I Do When an Employee Reports an Injury/Illness?
WORK RELATED INJURY/ILLNESS FLOW CHARTEmployees are required to report all work-related injury/Illness to their supervisor immediately
If serious or major injury, call 639-5911
Determine if injury/illness is work-related by asking questions like: What happened? What was the incident that caused your injury/illness? Were there witnesses to the incident of event? Is this a new injury/illness or do you have a pre-existing condition?
Ask additional Questions if Needed
NOYES
If the employee wants/needs medical attention, encourage the employee to go to the NBHC.
Call the clinic before sending the employee to the clinic.
Let the clinic know that the office or shop has a light duty position available should the PA or nurse place the employee on light or restricted duty as part of the injury recovery plan.
Initialize a mishap record in ESAMS. Conduct a thorough investigation. Stay engaged in managing the case.
Allow the employee to take sick leave and seek medical treatment at the employee's private health care provider.
Follow up to ensure that the employee did not receive any work restriction affecting the employee’s ability to perform assigned duties.

TIME HAS CAUGHT UP WITH US
ErgonomicsSTATISTICS
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from the year 2000 to 2010, workers in the 45 year-old and over age group have increased 7 percent.
• Median age of the workforce, in all industries is 42.• In 2008, there were 28 million workers over age 55. By 2016 that number is expected to increase
to 40 million.• Since 2011, 10,000 people turn 65 every day.• It is expected by 2020, 25% of the workforce will be 55+ years old.
63
EFFECTS AGING HAS ON OUR BODY
Ergonomics
FUNCTION WHAT OCCURS WHEN WE AGE MITIGATION
Vision
• Cornea becomes less sensitive• Sharpness gradually declines• Lower tolerance to glare • Reduced peripheral vision • Weakened eye muscle• Lower tear production
Require greater contrast perception, adding higher illumination to work areas, avoid glare by adding diffusers from light source, and indirect lighting. Larger fonts on required postings and warnings.
Hearing
• Changes in the inner ear• Changes in the middle ear• Complex changes along the nerve pathways
from the ear to the brain • Certain medical conditions• Medications
Avoid work areas that create echoes, consider smaller conference tables and use circular seating arrangements.
Muscle Strength
• Loss of muscle fibers• The speed of transmission of impulses from the
brain to the muscles also slows down• Decrease in enzyme activities and protein
turnover • Loss of around ten ounces of muscle each year• Sedentary lifestyle• Muscles take longer to respond to brain signals
Exercise increases muscle strength and endurance and has been shown to be useful for both the prevention and treatment of muscle loss. Encourage participation in the Wellness Program.
Balance
• Deterioration in the sensory systems• Changes the pattern of muscle activation• Sensory input slows down affecting information
exchange between the brain and muscles
Studies suggest placing cushioning close to the foot, insoles, will improve balance reactions.
