Dear Parishioners,
Yes, it’s still your pastor writing, but I wrote this, as
you might guess, before I took off for sunny Florida. I
arrived in Fort Myers about 5:30 PM Friday, and as you’re reading
this, depending on day and time, I’m either on the beach, enjoying
dinner or celebrating Mass. I’ll be celebrating Mass at St. Agnes
Catholic Church. The pastor there is Father Jonathan Romanoski. He
is assisted by Father Joshua Passo.
Father Romanoski was a few years behind me in seminary and
Father Passo, even further behind. I’m very much looking forward to
celebrating Masses there and getting to know some of the people.
That’s always one of the fascinating and enjoyable things about
visiting our various FSSP apostolates.
I’m in Florida with my brother in law and we’re spending our two
weeks in Sanibel Island. This is my brother in law’s first summer
without his wife – my sister, so it will be a bit difficult for both of us.
Still, my brother in law is a rather upbeat guy. He likes to enjoy
himself and knows wine very well. That’s just one of the things I
love about him.
I visited Sanibel many years ago. I remember that it was in 1988, on
the 10th anniversary of a company I had just started to work for. The
owner/boss, a mere six months my senior, insisted on taking the
entire company on a weekend excursion to Sanibel. I was kind of
honored to go, considering I’d only worked there a few weeks.
For the past 14 years, I had vacationed on Anna Maria Island, close
to Sarasota and Bradenton. With no sense of irony, but rather by
being honored by Divine Providence, I had celebrated Mass during
those years at the FSSP apostolate in Sarasota, Christ the King, the
parish from which our new assistant has come to us. Before Christ
the King came to be, the TLM was celebrated at St. Martha’s Church
in Sarasota. Yes, I celebrated Mass there too, during the FSSP’s
infancy in Florida. We are blessed to have Father Bartholomew as
our assistant. He and I get along famously and I see a bright future
for him here as well as for the rest of us, my children and my friends.

We’ve done so heroically well in the last two years and I’m
confident we will “deliver the goods again.” Let everyone see that
St. Joseph Church is a force to be dealt with!
Father Magiera and St. Joseph Church bid a fond farewell to organist
and choir leader Judge Richard Siegel. Judge Siegel has served St.
Joseph for several years and we are all enormously grateful to him
for his service.
In addition to his musical contributions, Judge Siegel has been a
steadfast promoter of the Traditional Latin Mass, and was instrumen-
tal in assisting the Joliet Latin Mass Community find a permanent
home here at St Joseph Church.
He and his choir very often occupied the choir loft here, offering li-
turgical music in a variety of styles, periods and centuries. His choir
performed Mass settings, sang Masses in Gregorian Chant and a va-
riety of motets. Members of his choir also sang with the choir of Jo-
liet’s St. Raymond Nonnatus Cathedral. There’s not enough room
here to cite all of his musical accomplishments as a composer, ar-
ranger, ensemble founder, performer and conductor, which spans an
incredible five decades of blessed and inspired work.
We thank Judge Siegel profoundly for his faithful and devoted ser-
vice, and ask God’s blessing on him, his wife and family.

Notre Dame Priory Retreats My name is Br Bede Mary Cannavo and I am writing from Notre
Dame Priory, a recently founded Benedictine community of tradi-
tional observance in Tasmania, Australia. In the interests of keeping
this note short, I will include a link to our 'About Us' page on our
website [https://www.notredamemonastery.org/about]. We were
founded on 22 Feb 2017 by a monk of St Joseph's Abbey, Flavigny,
France. We are directly under the auspices of the Archbishop of Ho-
bart and not a foundation of the previously mentioned monastery.
We will soon be travelling to the USA to conduct retreats based on
the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius, along with a taste of our mo-
nastic life, at Maria Stein retreat centre in Ohio. We were wondering
if you would be willing to advertise these retreats any of your apos-
tolates (particularly those in the region). I have included a little in-
formation about the retreats below. We have run retreats for quite a
number of years in New South Wales (near Sydney) with the assis-
tance of your confrères in the FSSP as confessors, such as Fr Duncan
Wong FSSP, Fr Damon Sypher FSSP and Fr Paul Leung FSSP.
Each day involves Holy Mass in the usus antiquior, a series of con-
ferences to prepare retreatants for the meditations proposed in the
Spiritual Exercises, devotions and certain hours of the monastic Di-
vine Office. There will be plenty of opportunities to see a priest for
spiritual direction and the Sacrament of Penance. The retreats are
silent. The dates are as follows:
Men’s 5 day retreat – Sunday 29 September – Friday 4 October 2019
Women’s 5 day retreat – Sunday 6 – Friday 11 October 2019
Venue: Maria Stein Spiritual Center 2365 St. Johns Road, Maria
Stein, Ohio 45860
The cost is USD$450 and bookings can be made
