Daimyo- Large landowners needed to protect land Samurai- Trained warriors hired to defend Light armor, with swords and bows Came from noble families Inherited their position Required to be loyal to lord

Army was expensive- only few could buy them weapons and armor
Paid them with food- rice- and land Lords gave land to only the most powerful samurai Samurai profited on land even if they didn’t live on it Hired peasants to work on it if they gave him some of the food

Lots of nobles were unhappy about how the government was being run
strong noble clans wanted the power for themselves in 1150’s two clans went to war the Minamoto clan won Wanted to take over the whole country didn’t get rid of the emperor emperor was figurehead- a person who appears to rule even
though the real power rests with someone else 1192- became the first Shogun- a general who ruled Japan in
the emperors name passed title down to son- for 700 years shoguns ruled Japan

The emperor didn’t rule anything even though it looked like it.
The shogun ruled all of the country.
The Daimyo were the powerful lords that samurais fought for.
Samurai were loyal to the daimyo and the shogun
Japanese were mostly poor peasants though
