“PRESIDENT’S CORNER”
Dear Goldenaires:
It’s April and the flowers and trees are in full
bloom! When I catch the fragrance of lilacs and freesias it
means Easter to me.
It seems we no sooner finish celebrating one
holiday then we hurry to prepare for the next. From
chocolate hearts to chocolate eggs and bunnies, Easter
baskets - does anyone do Easter bonnets anymore? I
haven’t seen little white gloves in a while either, but
however you celebrate the coming of spring, I hope it
brings you brightness and joy!
Speaking of joy, over a hundred members &
friends came to the St. Patrick’s Day luncheon and enjoyed
the corned beef and cabbage and the joyful and spirited
dancing by the talented and lovely students of LISA
BROSNAN IRISH SCHOOL OF DANCE! Also, a terrific
violin solo! I hope all of our luncheons have such a great
turnout this year!
I heard also that there was an increase in
attendance at the last dance and they were pleased to see
new faces! Maybe Carol’s invitations to the college dance
classes along with local dance studios, etc. helped and
members letting friends know!
The trip to Carmel started out rainy here, but was
lovely and sunny there and very nice! The day at the races
was fun for all and the buffet lunch terrific as always!
Next month is the trip to the Japanese Tea
Garden/Botanical Gardens with lunch, Greek Festival and a
tour to Filoli! I hope many of you sign up for these trips
along with many of the others that we have offered -a lot of
time is spent in planning these along with deposits. Many
of these tours are based on a minimum of 30-if we go any
less the cost jumps to a higher amount! If you have
suggestions for tours, please let the office know. Please
keep in mind that many tours require non-refundable
deposits (which is something we don’t like to do) or if they
require a certain number of participants, therefore, your
tour may not be booked. We also have seats still available
for Cache Creek on April 19th and Churches on the Hill on
April 25th. Do not delay in signing up!!
Our next lunch will be CINCO DE MAYO with
great Mexican food catered by Blueberry Catering-Roberto
Soriano. It will be a fun day with special entertainment!
From our suggestion box, it was suggested to offer
a movie night with pizza. Unfortunately, we are unable to
show movies at the Community Center unless we pay a
$600 fee to the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation in
Los Angeles. So, we thank you for the suggestion, but no
movie nights. Keep the suggestions coming -
we appreciate your interest and support to the Club!
Lastly, please note that there is a change in
signing up for trip-you may now sign-up for a trip as soon
as you receive the Newsette! No need to wait!
Best Wishes To You!

had a fabulous time; they have asked for a repeat! The
Zoo itself sits inside 490-acre Knowland Park and is home
to more than 660 native and exotic animals. There's a lot
to see and do while you're there. Explore the birds,
mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods. The

behind the giraffes. Here you will find an enormous 4-acre
area for the amazing elephants, a spacious tree-filled
enclosure for our lions, an aviary filled with beautiful birds,
and a quiet home for our zebras. Grab a snack or refreshing
beverage from the African Savannah Café and take a
moment to eat or rest under the pavilion. Don't forget to see
the Vervet Monkeys, sneak through the Savannah Reptile
cave, spy on the Hyenas, and crawl through the special
Meerkat viewing tunnel. As you explore this area, please
take note of the beautiful and unique plant life that is native
to the African Savannah. As you explore this area of the
Zoo, you will notice naturalistic rockwork, vines, climbing
structures and lush foliage. Animals like our Chimpanzee,

easy for walkers or wheelchairs. We will depart the Tea
Garden at 1:00pm and board the motorcoach to take us to
the CONSERVATORY OF FLOWERS for a self-guided
tour with a tour book (1:30-2:30). The Conservatory of

gem of Victorian architecture has a long and storied
history, and is the oldest public wood-and-glass
conservatory in North America. As a city, state and
national historic landmark, the Conservatory remains one
of the most photographed and beloved attractions in San
Francisco. Get eye to eye with a butterfly in the exhibit
Butterflies & Blooms coming to the Conservatory this fall.

butterflies on the wing including magnificent monarchs,
western swallowtails, painted ladies and more. Walk

zinnias and daisies while free-flying butterflies flit from
flower to flower, drinking nectar and getting covered in
pollen. These goodwill ambassadors of the insect world
provide a fascinating demonstration of plant pollination in
action. The Butterfly Bungalow at the entrance to the
gallery also allows you to observe the pupae in their
chrysalis stage. You never know, you may be lucky enough

Steps to Help Seniors Avoid Identity Theft For many seniors, having a nest egg provides peace of mind. Unfortunately, healthy savings accounts often make seniors the targets of identity thieves. Scammers also may consider seniors as easy marks because they can be more trusting than younger people, they may live alone and they often have favorable credit scores. If you’re a victim, you may not realize your identity has been stolen until you notice mysterious charges on your credit card or your bank account is suddenly cleaned out. Consider taking the following steps to protect yourself and your savings – information provided by ELDERCARE ALLIANCE:
Report Suspicious Activity
If you feel that you are a victim of identity theft, report the crime to your local police department and to the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC will send you an identity theft affidavit. Along with a police report, the document will help you work with your bank, credit card companies and other financial institutions to restore your identity.
Guard Your Personal Information You can take evasive actions to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft. Be cautious about any information you or your parent give out. Never share important details like your date of birth or Social Security number unless you contacted the party to whom you’re providing the information. In addition, leave important personal documents — including your Social Security and insurance cards — at home rather than carrying them in your wallet or purse. If your wallet is stolen, a thief will have everything he needs to open accounts in your name. And make sure to shred any documents that include personal information before putting them out with your trash.
Use Caution Online Don’t open email messages from senders you don’t recognize and don’t click on links within emails. An email can look as if it’s coming from your bank when it’s actually trying to lure you into turning over personal details or installing malicious software. Instead of clicking links, go directly to the website for the institution within your web browser. If you have questions about an email, call your bank.
Keep an Eye on Your Credit Be sure to monitor your credit, or that of your parent, on a regular basis. Consider investing in a credit monitoring service that will alert you to any unusual activity — such as large expenditures on credit cards or withdrawals from your bank — or other potential signs of identity theft.
Close Affected Accounts
If you do find that you’ve been a victim of identity theft, it’s wise to close any bank, credit card or other accounts that are affected. Your credit card company can simply cancel your old card and provide you with a new one with a different number. Some cases of identity theft are more complicated and difficult to correct, however. If a thief has taken out credit in your name or the name of your parent, you’ll have to prove that the accounts were opened fraudulently by reporting the incident and providing the creditor with the police report. The best course of action is preventing identity theft before it happens — by monitoring your credit, protecting your personal information and clicking carefully online.

Teaching technology to Goldenaires since April 2016: I push buttons that I never pushed before. I’m not afraid to
just push buttons. I’m not afraid to experiment with the thought that I’m going to lose everything because if you hit the undo
button it goes back. I’m more “comfortable” which with a senior is a good “word.” ~ Elena
After just four weeks of classes (one time per week)…“I’m not as afraid to try things. I don’t feel like I’m going to totally
screw it up. I got my phone when my husband passed away. I was taking classes at night and wanted it for emergencies. As it
turned out, the places that I go don’t have very many bars so I didn’t use it as a phone as much as I thought I would. So I
learned to play games and take notes on it. Now, that I have you to be my little help desk, I’m not afraid to learn new things.
I have the larger smartphone and have had it for three years. Now, it seems like a normal phone size to me. ~ Bette

Brain Fitness Workshop-no charge
JUNE 8th
(Thursday) 10:30-11:30AM
San Rafael Community Center (Goldenaires) Concept Statement:
As we age, we start relying more and more on the routines of life. We brush our teeth, we write our name or we drive the
same direction to the store. The challenge with routines? They don't require you to think about the activity.
There are many ways to exercise your brain:
Use your non-dominate hand to do a task * Drive a different way to go shopping
Learn something new * Play a Game
The Alzheimer's Foundation of American suggests the following five things to promote a healthy brain lifestyle:
Physical Activity -- walk, dance, garden
Nutrition -- eat lean protein, fruits, vegetables, foods high in omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants
Socialization -- call a family member, visit a friend, join an organization, volunteer
Mental Stimulation -- read out loud, problem solve, play a game
Spirituality -- pray, meditate, go to a place of worship
Workshop: San Rafael Goldenaires & Senior Access will be offering a new way to accomplish these activities.
Join us for 1 hour of FUN activities. Our activity leader will lead you through a series of brain fitness exercises.
The event will provide you an opportunity to achieve:
Physical Activity (you have to get to the event);
Socialization (you will be surround by a group of other people); and
Mental Stimulation (you play games together).
CALL 415-485-3348 to reserve a space in this fun workshop! Limited to only 20 participants!
